Summary

I’m Rhea Westbrook, a fourteen year old girl, who has just been dragged back to the place where both my parents grew up and I was born. My father Kai Westbrook is one of the two town doctors who owns his family’s practice on Main Street and his girlfriend Sharna Conners runs her family’s restaurant which happens to be one of the two in this town. My mother Rowan Bridge decided she wanted to leave corporate law, move back to her hometown, and run our family’s law practice. So we left Miami and she moved us back to Bellfort. She tells me how it’s fun living in a small town where everyone knows each other and I’ll be closer to my father who I barely even talk to. I don’t see how but it’s not like I had a choice anyway.

Chapter 1

I ran as far away as I could, as fast as I could, for as long as I could. I didn’t want to hear them say it because that would make it real. I already knew what they were going to say and I didn’t want it to be real. So I ran, to where I have no idea but it was better than being there. Anywhere was better than being there. I don’t know where I ran to but when I got there I felt safe; alone or so I thought. I got that feeling you get when someone is behind you so I turned around and there she was.

“Hey, I know you,” she said.

I replied, “I highly doubt that”.

She laughed, “You’re the doctors’ daughter, you just moved here with your mom, I’m Casey.”

“Did you follow me?” I asked.

“Kind of.”

I thought to myself “who is this girl and why does she know who I am?” As I turned away from her and headed back the way I came. While I walked away from her she caught up and asked,

“So, why were you running into the woods like a crazy person?”

I replied, “If you thought I was crazy, why would you follow me?”

“In my experience, I find it best not to leave a crazy person alone running into the woods.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. If I was crazy then this girl is freaking insane. I looked at her and said, “I’m Rhea.”

“Well, Rhea because I’m a good friend I’ll let you avoid answering my question.”

I smiled “I didn’t know we were friends”

She laughed “Of course we are, you’re crazy and I’m weird.”

I looked confused by the point she was trying to make. She could tell because she quickly said “We’re going to be best friends.”

I guess that's how you make friends in this town. As insane as Casey seemed it felt nice making a new friend in this miserable town. She and I walked for about half an hour until we got to my dad's house. We stopped in front of my dad’s,

“You didn't have to walk me home, I'm fine.”

Casey smiled “ Technically I didn’t, I live across the street.” then we both went into our houses.

As soon as I walked in the door the light from the living room flickered on and my dad's girlfriend walked towards me and asked “ Are you okay?” I shook my head yes and went to my room. I took a shower, put pajamas on, and want to sleep because tomorrow Mom will be back from my old house and I'd be stuck in this town.
