*Flashback*

~4th Grade~

"Kayla, Kayla sweetie, wake up! If you don't wake up, you'll be late for school!" someone said. School? That didn't make much sense. As far as I was concerned, I was in the pool with my new mermaid best friend and we didn't do school.

Now, someone was shaking me. Don't people know something called personal space?! Slowly, after a couple minutes, I come to the realization that I was in the "real world" and that today was the first day of 4th grade. I also realized that it was my mom who was shaking me. In my opinion it wasn't exactly my fault that I couldn't wake up. My family and I were in Los Angeles just this morning, visiting my grandparents. Our flight was delayed, so we didn't actually get onto a flight until 2am. Also, sorry not sorry that the planes had TV's on them.

I rolled off my bed with my blanket and started sleepwalking over to the bathroom that was connected to my room to begin brushing my teeth. I washed my face with cold water, making me completely awake. Then, I went back to my room to pick an appropriate first day of school outfit. Like most girls that I knew, even if their closet was full, they would still not have anything to wear. I was the same. After going through my closet about 10 times, I come out with a plain white shirt with the word "hello" in the middle, a cute mustard colored skirt, some white sandals, and baby pink sunglasses.

I then make my way down the stairs of my two-story house. No, to the question you were thinking. I live in a every-day house that every-day people live in. We're not rich, and I could care less.

I reached the first floor and started smelling the best scent ever. I pop my head into the kitchen and immediately see a stack of chocolate chip pancakes with strawberries on the side. My favorite!

"BOO!" my parents yelled. I nearly tripped over my own foot, face-planting, but I didn't! I turn to glare at my parents, but then proceed to thank my dad for the pancakes. My mom couldn't cook for her life, so my dad did all the cooking. I was pretty sure that my mom could burn down the house making something easy, like scrambled eggs. While I ate, my mother curled my hair. My hair was straight and colored dark brown. It could definitely be straighter than paper. I hated it...it was just so plain.

We passed the 'East Bridge Elementary' sign, indicating that I was going to arrive at the school in the next 10 seconds. When I got to school playground, I didn't know what to do. My friend, or I guess ex-friend, recently ditched me to become friends with the popular group. Apparently I wasn't fun and I didn't have cool enough clothes. I then notice that same exact group running together to something...or someone. I spun around to look at who they were running towards. I didn't know how to describe him. He definitely was someone who could and would join their group. He also looked like the type of person who wouldn't fill my empty best friend slot. He looked like he belonged at the middle school down the road, and not some 4th grade class. He had a mess of curly chestnut brown hair on the top of his head, an almost symmetrical face, with the prettiest forest green eyes that were glaring at the group running towards him. Or maybe that was his neutral face? He wore a black fitted shirt, some light-washed jeans, and white authentic vans. He was cute for a 4th grader.

I looked up and locked eyes with him. He cocked his head, grinned, and started walking towards me with the whole group of girls following. He reached out and shook my hand. Since when did we travel back into time to the 5th century?

"Liam." "What's your name?Take a picture, it'll last longer." he said, waving a hand in front of my face.

So Liam was his name. "Don't flatter yourself too much, I wasn't checking you out. It's just that I noticed that you had a little scar by your lip. I was wondering who got the pleasure of making it." I replied sweetly.

"Oh? Now your thinking about smashing my lips?" he grinned. I rolled my eyes and started on my way toward the classroom.

The school day ended and my mom finally arrived to pick me up. I hopped into her white 2019 Toyota Sienna. "How was the first day of 4th grade Kaybear" my mom asked.

"Good, there was a new student. His name is Liam and he's my seat partner. Also, your 10 minutes late" I state, pouting.

"On a scale of 1-10, what's the cuteness at?" my mom questioned, ignoring the comment about her being late. My mom was a cool mom. While most moms forced their daughters away from boys, my mom invites them over. Sometimes it was good that my mom was like that, but other times it was embarrassing.

"Mooooommm. Can you not?" I whine.

"Whatt? It's a very valid question." my mom reasoned.

"He's okay..I guess," I said, not knowing how to respond. While he thought he was everything, he still was different from the other boys in my grade. Or maybe I just thought that because I thought he was a tiny bit cute.

"Kayla, is that a blush I see?" my mom asked, smirking.

"No! I'm not blushing, you should clean your mirror. I think you may have smeared some lip gloss on it." I replied hastily.

"Gotcha! Well, while I go get the supplies to clean the mirror, how about you go inside and surprise dad? He's home early today." my mom whispered, looking back at me.

"He's home? Yay!" Already halfway out of the car, I run to the front door.

I tip-toed into my house, dropping my backpack on the way into the living room. I crawled behind the couch like a spy and in one swift motion, I jumped forward onto my dad's lap.

"Hey! Who are you and what are you doing?" he asked very seriously, tightening his hold.

"It's me! I totally scared you!" I giggled.

"Nu uh. I was not scared." my dad replied.

"Yes you were!" I complain.

"Fineee, yes I was. How was school?" my dad asked, admitting defeat.

"Awesome! I don't have any homework. Also, there was a new student. His name is Liam and he's my seat partner. He's a little cocky, but he makes it up when he's nice. He actually helps people. He's also really good at math. He's a pretty cu-cool person." I stopped talking instantly, realizing that I was rambling...rambling about a boy...rambling about a boy to my dad.

"Cute huh?" my dad smiled, catching onto my slip.
