Chapter Fourteen: A Bit of Trouble
Dinner had been too quiet after her questions. And Aurora had suspicions that her father and the others aren’t telling her the full truth. And her mother knows more then she lets on.
“No, sir, we didn’t tell her anything.”
Aurora paused when she heard Ren’s voice. She noticed the door to a room opened slightly and moved over to the door and peeked inside.
Ren stood with Sofia, Nicola, and Paolo to one side of the room as her father paced the floor in front of them.
“She is asking too many questions,” Dom said as he shook his head.
“She’s just curious, Papa,” Sofia said as she watched her foster father.
“Curiosity is what will get her killed,” Dom said as he stopped and looked at them. “Are you sure she does not suspect anything?” He asked as he looked at Ren.
Ren shook his head. “I made sure to keep her mind off anything that may imply…well…”
“Well, what?” Dom demanded.
“Leoni found us, and he said something that really upset her. I had to change the subject to get her mind off it…”
“What did he say?” Dom asked.
Aurora stared at Ren through the crack in the door. Is that why he had made love to her? Because he wanted to keep her mind off what Leoni had said? What had Leoni said that would make him stoop so low?
“He called her my target, and she flipped,” Ren said.
Aurora felt her veins turn to ice. Of course, she remembers now. He really had done a great job to get her to forget that. Does that mean that her father wants her dead?
“Damn it,” Dom grumbled.
“He couldn’t have prevented the words from coming from the man’s mouth, Papa,” Sofia said as she looked at Ren then back at Dom.
Dom shook his head. “Let’s just hope she doesn’t remember.”
“I changed the subject, and her mind turned to her legs when she noticed they were bleeding. I think I convinced her that I was there to help, not harm,” Ren said with a nod.
I have been duped. Aurora thought.
The man she loves doesn’t love her back, he will never love her back, and she’s stuck with people who want her dead. She whimpered as everything slammed home and covered her mouth as she backed away. She wanted to rush into the room and yell at them…
“What was that?” Sofia asked as she looked at the door. “Who didn’t close the door?”
Aurora backed up against the wall of the hall as the door was flung open.
“Piccolo,” Sofia said with wide eyes. “How much did you hear?”
“Enough to know that you all want me dead,” Aurora said, then covered her mouth with her hands, her eyes opening wide with fear.
“No,” Sofia said with a sigh as she shook her head.
“Aurora,” Ren said as he moved to stand next to Sofia in the doorway.
“You may as well come inside, Aurora,” Dom said as he watched them from his place in the middle of the room.
Aurora shook her head as Sofia pulled her into the room, then closed the door.
“You are safe, Piccolo,” Paolo said as he nodded to the girl.
Aurora shook her head. “I heard you. I am the target.”
Dom grumbled. “Why would I target my own daughter?”
“I don’t know,” Aurora said with a cry. “Because you have a son now?”
Everyone in the room sucked in a shocked breath.
“Piccolo, you are the Gem…” Paolo started to say.
“I don’t even know what that means,” Aurora said with a cry as she interrupted him.
“Aurora,” Dom whispered as he moved towards his daughter.
“No,” Aurora said as she shook her head and backed away.
“Aurora,” Ren said as he reached out for her.
Aurora pulled away from him. He had only bedded her to keep her mind off the fact that he was sent to kill her. None of what he had felt was real…
“Aurora Romano,” Dom said as he placed his hands on his hips, “you shouldn’t listen in on conversations you don’t understand.”
“I didn’t mean to,” she said with a cry, “I heard Ren’s voice…,” she stopped, and her cheeks turned a bright red. “And my name is Jilani,” she said as she changed the subject.
“Jilani is the name your mother, and I came up with while you were in protective custody, so to speak,” Dom said with a nod towards his daughter. “You were born Romano; you will always be Romano.”
“Until you tire of me,” Aurora cried.
“Aurora,” Sofia said with a gasp.
“I don’t think I should stay here,” Aurora said with a cry, then turned to the door and fled the room.
“Aurora,” Sofia cried out as she chased after her.
“No,” Dom said as he grabbed hold of Sofia’s arm, then looked at Ren, “go after her.”
Ren nodded as he headed for the door.
Once he was gone, Sofia looked at Dom. “I see what you have done, Papa.”
Dom looked at his foster daughter. “And what is that?”
Sofia laughed, “you could have sent me and Nicola after Aurora, but you sent Ren.”
Dom shrugged his shoulders. “He’s my second in command, I trusted him to get the job done.”
Sofia scoffed, “I could have done the job, just as easily. You wanted them to meet, under pressure.”
Dom shook his head. “I don’t have any idea what you are talking about. Now, let’s get back down to business. Do you think anyone suspects anything?”
Sofia laughed as they talked about anything and everything, except for Ren and her sister.
Ren ran through the yard as he chased after Aurora. What exactly had she heard to make her think they want her dead?
“Aurora!” He hollered when he saw her heading for the road.
“Leave me alone!” She screamed as she ran out into the middle of the street.
A car honked as it barely missed hitting her.
“Damn it!” Ren hollered as he ran across the street after her. “Aurora, stop!”
“I’m not going back there!” She cried out as she ran down the sidewalk.
Neighbors peeked out their windows at them as he chased her down the sidewalk. He hoped no one recognized her or knew Trevisani.
“Whoa there, little lady,” a man said when Aurora ran into him on the sidewalk.
“Sorry,” Aurora grumbled as she tried to pry her arms free of the man’s hold.
“I guess you found your father, huh? Did he turn you away?”
Aurora stared up at the stranger. No, not here too. The man didn’t look Italian, maybe he wasn’t one of Trevisani’s men.
“Let her go, Andy,” Ren said as he caught up to them.
“Ren, my boy,” Andy said as he grinned at Ren. “Did you figure out where she would be too?”
“Andy, I know you’re trying to show the boss that you’re just as good as the others. You feel you need to do better because you’re not Italian, but this isn’t the way to do it,” Ren said as he watched the man.
“What gave it away, that I’m not Italian?” Andy asked as he looked at Aurora. “Is it my red hair?”
Aurora stared at the man. He sure is just as crazy as the others who have come after her.
“Give her over to me, and I’ll make sure Trevisani gives you the credit,” Ren said as he stepped towards them.
“Uh-uh,” Andy said with a shake of his head as he pulled Aurora away from Ren. “I’m turning her in…”
“No, you’re not,” Ren said with a growl.
“Do you really want to make a scene in front of all these witnesses?” Andy asked as he nodded his head towards the houses, where people were peeking out their windows at them.
“Don’t you think they will know who kidnapped the Romano Princess, now that they’ve seen your face?”
Andy’s face paled. He hadn’t thought of that.
“Fine, you take her,” he said as he shoved Aurora at Ren.
Ren held Aurora against him as he studied the man. What was his game, or was he worried about being spotted with Aurora?
“Just make sure I get the credit,” Andy said, then turned and walked away.
“Are you letting him go?” Aurora whispered.
Ren looked around them at the onlookers and nodded. “For now, I have to,” he said, then led her back down the sidewalk towards the Romano mansion.
“Will he tell Trevisani that I’m here?” She asked in a whisper as she looked over her shoulder.
“No, he’ll wait until I bring you to them. He won’t say anything until he has proof. Trev won’t believe him if he can’t hand you over himself,” Ren said as he steered her onto the Romano property, then pressed a few keys on the panel and watched the gate close.
“Why didn’t you let him take me?” She asked as she stared up at him.
“I would think that would be obvious,” he said as he walked her towards the house.
She dragged her feet into the ground and pulled on her arm. “I don’t want to go back in there,” she hissed.
Ren sighed, “fine,” he said, then headed towards the woods.
“No,” she cried as he dragged her into the woods.
Is he going to kill me and bury me, then tell everyone that I ran away?
Ren dragged Aurora through the woods to his favorite spot. There is a small creek and a patch of grass he liked to sit on at night and watch the stars.
Aurora stared at the beautiful stream. Well, at least her death site will be pretty.
“Aurora,” Ren said as he turned to face her.
She stared into his eyes. “What?”
“Why are you afraid of me?”
She snorted, “I’m your target, remember.”
“I thought we solved this…”
“No,” she said with annoyance, “you settled it by distracting me. You made love to me just to distract me from the fact that you were sent to kill me.”
Ren laughed. “Is that what you got from what you overheard?”
She glared at him. “I got that from your words…”
He pulled her into his arms and kissed her. She tried to push him away, but he was too strong. When she finally relaxed in his arms, he slid his tongue into her mouth, and her body caught fire.
“I distracted you with words,” he said as he lifted his head. “You were freaking out, so I changed the subject to get your mind off what Leoni had said. Yes, you were my target. But not the way he or you took it. I was sent to protect you, not harm you. Your father loves you.”
“But he has an heir now,” she breathed.
Ren snorted, “like that changes anything. He had sent me to get you before he knew about his son. And my mission was and always will be, to protect you.”
“And the sex?” She asked.
He grinned, “I made love to you because I wanted you. Not because I wanted you to forget about something or someone. I made love to you because I care for you.”
She watched the emotions in his eyes and smiled. “Just care?”
He growled as he took her mouth with his and kissed her senseless.
Aurora moaned as she wrapped her arms around his neck. Ren pushed her backward until her back hit the rough bark of a tree, but she didn’t care about that. He cares for her. That’s all that mattered right now.
Someday, maybe he will come to love her as she loves him.
“You’re crazy,” he said as he lifted her up and wrapped her legs around his hips.
“I am?” She asked as she looked into his face.
He grunted, “you are. Running away like that. What if I hadn’t caught up to you in time, and Andy had taken off with you?” He asked as he kissed down her throat.
She sighed as she tilted her head to the side. “Then the neighbors would have told you what happened,” she groaned when he nipped at her shoulder.
“And what if we had been too late to rescue you? I don’t think I could live without you,” he said as he pressed his arousal against her.
Aurora felt a bright light flash through her body at his words.
“God, I want you,” he moaned as he bit her ear lobe.
“I want you too,” she whispered.
With a grunt, he unfastened her pants, then slid them down her legs and lifted her back up and wrapped her legs around him again.
“Say it again,” he said as he kissed her.
“I want you,” she said with a moan.
He growled as he slipped his finger under her panties and slid it deep into her pussy. She moaned as her head tilted back, he grinned as he removed his finger and unfastened his pants. Once he had his hard cock out of his pants, he pulled her panties aside and thrust forward, slamming into her.
Aurora cried out as sensations exploded through her body. She panted as she moved with him as he slammed himself deep inside her. The bark of the tree dug into her back, but she didn’t care. It actually heightened the sensations and made her cum all over his cock.
Ren groaned when she tightened around him. He has never had sex outside before, and he liked it. Or was it that he liked it anywhere with her? He hadn’t been lying to her, he cares for her—more than he’s willing to admit right now.
And if Dom ever found out, the man would toss him out on his ear faster than he could say, I Love Her.
