Chapter Two: The Boss’s Daughter
“Who were you on the phone with?” Aurora asked, raising her voice so he could hear her through the door.
“Your father,” he replied as he opened the door and stepped out of the bathroom.
“My father is dead,” she repeated for what felt like the hundredth time.
“Your father is very much alive and is eager to see you,” he said with a crooked smile that almost melted her heart.
She shook her head. This man is crazy, a lunatic, a murderer… “You killed that man,” she whispered.
He sighed as he moved towards her. “As I told you, he was here to kill you.”
“But…but you killed him.”
“I did,” he said with a nod, “and I would do it again. They sent me to protect you, Aurora. And I can’t do that; if I let them go…” Crap, he shouldn’t have said that.
“Them?!” She hollered as she jumped onto the bed on her knees and stared at him. “There’s more?” She squealed.
Ren went to open his mouth to answer; when a knock came to the door. He held his finger to his lips as he pulled a gun from his back.
Aurora placed her hands over her mouth and held herself still on the bed.
Ren peeked through the peephole.
“Room service,” the man outside the door said as he knocked again.
Ren held the gun behind his back and opened the door. The man pushed the cart inside, but Ren pressed the door against it.
“Leave it there, I’ll get it,” he told the man.
“Yes, sir,” the man said as he let go of the cart, then turned and walked back down the hall.
Ren pulled the cart into the room, then closed and locked the door. He looked at Aurora with a smile.
“Hungry?” He asked as he wheeled the cart towards the couch and coffee table in the room.
“Starved,” she said as she moved off the bed and headed towards the cart.
“I got you a burger and fries, I hope that’s okay,” he said as he lifted the lids off the trays.
“That’s fine,” she said with a nod, then picked up a tray and walked back to the bed.
Ren watched her set the tray on the bed, then climb back up onto it and pick up her burger.
So much for eating together. Ren thought with a shrug, then picked up his burger and took a large bite out of it.
“So, who actually hired you?” She asked between bites of her burger.
He shook his head. She just refuses to believe that her father is alive.
“As I said…”
“Stop bullshitting me,” she said with an annoyed look as she bit into her burger again.
He laughed and shook his head; he liked her spunk. She’s a lot like her father but looked like her mother, except for the olive skin and dark hair, which she got from her father. And the attitude most definitely Domenico.
But those blue eyes, she definitely got from her mother.
“I’m not changing my answer, just because you don’t believe me,” he said as he took a bite of his burger.
“My father died when I was three,” she said with the saddest face he had ever seen.
“He didn’t die, Aurora. He’s alive and waiting for the return of his family.”
She looked up at him with hopeful eyes. “If he’s alive, why hadn’t he come for us sooner?” She asked as a tear slid down her cheek.
“Because he couldn’t chance Trevisani going after you or your mother again.”
“Mom!” She hollered, jumping out of bed and almost dumping what was left of her fries. “She’s on vacation, and I have no way of contacting her,” she said with panic in her bright blue eyes.
Ren got to his feet and moved over to her. He placed his hands on her shoulders and looked deep into her eyes.
“We have a man waiting at the docks. He will protect your mother,” he said as he tried to calm her.
“Jayme,” she said as tears slid down her cheeks.
“Who’s Jayme? Is he your boyfriend?” He asked as he studied her face.
She shook her head. “He’s with my mom, I didn’t want to go on the trip, I wanted to stay home and study for my exam,” she said with a cry.
He sighed as he pulled her against his chest. “She will be okay, I promise.”
“How can I accept your promise when I don’t even know you?” She asked as she rubbed her eyes.
Ren smiled as he backed away and held his hand out to her. “Lorenzo Mancini.”
She stared at his outstretched hand for a moment before she placed her hand into it. The warmth of his hand sent a shiver down her spine. And not an unpleasant one.
“Aurora Jilani,” she whispered.
He smiled as he pulled their hands to his chest, which pulled her within inches of him. She stared up at him, surprised. He was tall and very good looking. More than that, he was gorgeous. His dark chocolate eyes bore into her as she stared up at him.
Ren grinned, “now, you know me.” He was so tempted to lean forward and kiss her. But he held himself straight and let go of her hand. “Finish eating. You can have the bathroom first,” he said as he backed away.
She looked disappointed that he had backed away from her, without at least a peck on the cheek. Well, she’s his boss’s daughter. What did she expect him to do?
He shook his head as he went back to his food and started eating again. But it tasted like crap and felt worse going down. He was attracted to her. But who could blame him? With her long dark hair and olive skin, and those amazing blue eyes…
“I’m done eating,” she whispered as she placed the tray onto the cart, “I’m going to take a shower.”
“Your clothes are in your bag,” he grumbled as he pointed to the bag he had packed for her.
She stared at him for a moment before she went to her bag. “You packed for me?” She asked as she unzipped the bag.
“You were out cold,” he said with a shrug.
“Even my under…” She stopped with a groan as she pulled a pair of panties from the bag.
“I promise I didn’t look,” he mumbled.
“Sure,” she said as she lifted the bag and carried it into the bathroom.
Ren sighed. She didn’t believe him. Hell, he wouldn’t believe him, either.
Aurora laid on the bed with her back to the bathroom door. She had said very little to him when she had left the bathroom after her shower. What could Aurora say to a man who has seen her undergarments? She sighed as she closed her eyes. Maybe he hadn’t looked.
She was in-between awake and asleep when the bathroom door opened. Aurora listened to his movements as he turned off the lights and got ready for bed. She swallowed when he got close to the bed. When she felt the bed dip from his weight, her eyes popped open.
“What are you doing?” She croaked.
He chuckled as he laid on his back. “Going to bed.”
“Not here, you’re not,” she said as she turned to face him.
“Aurora, I’m not sleeping on the couch. It’s too far away from you. I’m supposed to keep you safe,” he said as he stared at her.
She pouted, “Then pull the couch closer to the bed.”
He smirked as he locked his hands behind his head. “It’s easier to protect you from here.”
“Or do other…” She stopped when she saw the gleam in his eyes. He had thought about it…
“Don’t get me wrong, Aurora. You’re beautiful, but you’re not my type,” he said as he watched her.
The hell she’s not. A voice growled in his head.
Beautiful? He finds me Beautiful? What the hell is she supposed to do with that?
“Go to sleep, Aurora,” he said as he reached his hand over and turned out the light beside the bed.
Sleep, yeah, sleep. Aurora thought as she rolled away from him.
Ren smiled as he closed his eyes. But that was no good. The look in her eyes haunted him. She was confused, and if he had caught it right, a little aroused. He grunted as he turned onto his side to face her.
She wasn’t what he’d expected. Hell, he didn’t know what he had expected. But this fireball; was definitely not it. Even without living under her father’s roof, she still had his attitude, with plenty of spunk.
The memory of her nice round ass against his crotch had him getting hard again. He shook his head.
Keep your head away from those ideas, and the rest of your damn body too. He scolded himself.
Finally, sleep took him under. But his dreams were no help to his libido.
Aurora sighed in her sleep as she settled herself closer to the warmth behind her. She felt so warm like she was in a cocoon. Aurora felt something heavy across her body, holding her to that warmth. She wiggled her ass against the heat with a sigh of contentment.
Ren groaned when something pressed against him. He felt himself harden and grumbled something not even he understood. Was this a dream? He pulled the warmth closer to his body, burning with something he couldn’t describe.
The sound of a gun cocking had him wide awake. Aurora was nestled against his groin. Someone was standing behind him, with a gun over his shoulder, pointed straight at her. Ren moved so fast; the guy had no chance to pull the trigger.
Aurora woke with a scream as Ren forced the man’s wrist back far enough; they heard a crack.
“Shit,” the guy said with a cry of pain as Ren jumped out of bed and slammed the man against the wall. “Ren, dude, I didn’t know it was you,” the kid cried as he looked into Ren’s face.
“Marco,” Ren growled as he held the kid against the wall by his throat. “What the hell are you doing?”
“Boss says she has to die,” Marco said as he looked past Ren at the girl in the bed.
“Damn it, Marco,” Ren growled, “I thought I was getting some leeway with you.”
“What? You thought because you gave me a couple pep talks, that it would change my life?” Marco snorted, “get real, man. This is my life. This is the life I was raised in. And the money they offered me to off the bitch…”
Ren slammed the kid’s head against the wall. “Watch how you talk about her. Do you even know why Trevisani wants her dead?”
“Something about an eye for an eye. I don’t give a shit. If Trev wants her dead, then she will die,” Marco said as he spat towards Aurora.
Aurora whimpered as she backed away from them. Why won’t they just leave her alone?
“I hate to do this, Marco. I had such high hopes for you,” Ren said with a shake of his head.
Marco snorted, “you going for the money?”
Ren leaned in closer to Marco’s ear. “I’m going for it all,” He whispered, then snapped the kid’s neck.
Aurora screamed as she bent forward and covered her head with her arms when she heard the snap.
“We’ve got to go,” Ren said as he grabbed their bags.
“You killed him,” she cried, “he was just a kid.”
“Nineteen,” Ren said with a nod.
“You knew him. Like he was a friend,” she said as she peeked up at him from her position on the bed.
“I knew him,” he said with a nod, “like a friend.”
“And you killed him,” she said as she watched him pack their bags.
“And I killed him,” he said with another nod.
“People keep dying because of me,” she cried.
Ren dropped the bags on the floor and moved over to her. He crawled onto the bed and pulled her out of her position and looked into her eyes.
“It is not because of you. The kid made his own life choices. You didn’t make them for him.”
She shook her head. “But he was after me…”
“That was his decision. Now, get up, and let’s get moving,” Ren said as he helped Aurora off the bed.
She avoided looking at the body as Ren dragged her from the room and out into the night.
Once they were situated in his car, they drove away and never looked back.
