Chapter Thirty-Five: Have My Back
“Sir, Trevisani is on the phone for you,” a man said as he walked down the stairs into the cellar.
The man took the phone and placed it to his ear and started talking.
Aurora glared at Ren. “You cad,” she growled.
Ren grinned at her. “Sticks and stones, babe.”
“Don’t call me that.”
He laughed a hollow laugh.
“Yes, sir!” The large man said, then hung up the phone and turned to them with a grin. “Well, since the wedding didn’t work, and we have plans in motion to kill Domenico Romano and his wife, Sunday, he said that we can have the pleasure of taking out the daughter.”
Ren’s head whipped to Angelo. “Sunday?”
“Yeah. Didn’t you get the memo?” Angelo asked with a grin.
Ren sucked in a sharp breath. “No, I did not. What happened to the plans I sent last night, about Saturday?”
Angelo shrugged, “Trevisani didn’t like it, I guess, plus, Sunday we can take out his wife as well.”
Aurora whimpered. They plan to kill her parents on Sunday? And Ren had been a part of it?!
“Yeah, sounds easier, but what is the plan?” Ren asked as he moved away from the wall.
“We will take them all out as they enter the Church on Sunday morning. Hope to get that bitch Sofia at the same time, she will be a hassle, once Dom is gone,” Angelo said with a laugh.
“You monster!” Aurora hollered as she jumped to her feet.
“Sit down!” Angelo hollered as he raised his hand to hit her.
Ren quickly moved to Aurora and pressed her back into the chair, then placed his hand around her throat and leaned in so he could whisper in her ear.
“Stay quiet, and in your seat, he won’t think twice about beating a woman.”
“What does it matter? You will kill me anyway,” she cried.
“Just listen to me for once, will you,” he grumbled.
She squealed as she lashed out and kicked him in the shin.
Ren hollered and jumped back, hopping on one foot as he rubbed his shin.
Angelo laughed. “Lover’s spat?” He asked with a grin.
Ren snorted, “you can say that.”
“Lovers spat!” Aurora yelled as she glared at them. “I wouldn’t let him touch me again with a ten-foot pole!”
Angelo barked a laugh. “Good thing he won’t be the one killing you then, huh.”
Aurora felt all the blood leave her face. No, this can’t be happening. Why wasn’t Ren saving her? Why isn’t he kicking this man’s ass and saving her!? What has happened to her, Ren?! She whimpered. He’s not her Ren, he never was.
“I guess it’s time,” Angelo said as he looked up when they heard noises above them.
“What’s going on?” Ren asked as he looked up at the ceiling.
“Oh, nothing much, just a bunch of our guys getting ready to take out all the spies Romano has in our home.”
Ren stared at Angelo. “All of them?”
Angelo laughed, “don’t worry, little brother, you have proved yourself more than once that you’re one of us.”
“Load off my mind,” Ren grumbled.
“What spies?” Aurora asked.
“None of your concern,” Angelo said as he lifted her to her feet. They walked downstairs, into a cellar, which looked to be designated for assassinations. “Kneel,” he said as he kicked her legs out from under her.
With a whimper, she went to her knees and closed her eyes. Here it is—the end. Wait, no, she can’t let it be the end, she has too much to live for. Even if she no longer has Ren, she still has...
“I’m pregnant!” She hollered, her eyes popping open as she stared at Ren.
Ren’s eyes widened as he stared back at her. “Shit.”
Angelo laughed, “probably not even yours, Ren.”
“Ren, please,” Aurora cried, “it is yours; you know it is.”
Ren shook his head.
“Please!” She cried, pleading with him.
“Ah, stop begging,” Angelo said as he pulled his gun from his waist and pointed it at Aurora’s head.
With a loud cry, Aurora closed her eyes tight as she waited.
She screamed when she heard the two shots. The sound of a large body falling to the floor behind her had her eyes popping open. The first thing she saw was Ren still standing where he had been, his gun out, smoke still coming off the barrel. The second thing she saw was the look on his face.
So ice-cold, it gave her chills. She slowly turned her head and looked down at the body behind her.
“You killed him,” she whispered.
Ren laughed. “You really have to say that each time, don’t you?” He said as he replaced his gun at his back.
She looked back up at him with questions in her eyes.
Ren quickly moved to her and pulled her into his arms as he knelt beside her. “I’m sorry you had to go through that, baby. But when I got the call that they figured out who you are, I had to play along, to make sure you stayed safe,” he said as he kissed her all over her face.
“Ren?” She asked as she cried.
“I told you not to forget,” he said as he held her face in his hands. “Did you forget?” She nodded, and he shook his head. “Aurora, my love. Never ever forget that I love you and only you. I will always have your back.”
She burst into tears so profoundly he felt himself crying with her as he held her tight.
“Marry me,” he whispered.
She choked on her tears. “What?”
He chuckled, “marry me, Aurora,” he said as he pulled back from her.
She stared up at him with teary eyes. “You’re only asking because of the baby.”
He chuckled, ”that I have to admit was a surprise. But a wonderful one. I am asking you because I love you,” he said as he reached into his pants pocket and pulled out a ring. “I was going to give this to you tonight. I wasn’t sure when. I was still working out the details when I got the call and saw Angelo enter the restaurant.”
“Oh, Ren,” she cried as she slammed into him and kissed him.
He laughed, “I know this isn’t the greatest place, being there’s a dead man behind us, and there is a half dozen men upstairs waiting to gun us down as we escape, but I had to do it.”
“Yes,” she said with a vigorous nod. “There’s always a dead body around us, isn’t there?” She asked with a laugh as he slid the ring onto her finger.
He laughed, then remembered something. “Ah, crap,” he said as he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his phone and pressed the speaker button. “Did you get all that?”
Aurora’s eyes widened when she recognized her father’s voice.
“Cutting it a bit close, weren’t you, Son?”
Aurora’s eyebrows furrowed; she didn’t know that voice.
“I got a bit of a shock when Aurora screamed her announcement,” Ren said with a quiet chuckle.
“Your father is right. You put my daughter and your child in danger there, boy,” Dom said, a bit annoyed. “Now get my daughter home. I have sent Stefano and a few men to take care of the men above you, it should be clear soon.”
“Yes, sir,” Ren said, then hung up the phone.
“Father?” Aurora asked with a dozen questions blazing in her eyes.
He laughed, “I’ll tell you about it later, let’s get out of here. Are you okay?” She nodded as he helped her to her feet. “The baby?” He asked as he placed his hand over her stomach.
She smiled up at him. “The baby is just fine. We survived Martina; we will survive this.”
His eyes widened. “You were pregnant when-when..."
She took a deep breath as she looked away from him. “Yes,” she whispered.
“How far along are you?”
“Almost five months,” she whispered.
“Aurora!” He hollered as he took a step back from her. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
She shrugged her shoulders. “I was scared.”
“Scared? Aurora, what in the world do you have to be scared of?”
“Oh, I don’t know, I’ve almost been killed how many times now?”
He sighed as he pulled her to him and held her as she cried. “You still should have told me.”
“I didn’t know how.”
“How about. Hey Ren, guess what, you’re going to be a father…” He stopped as he stared at the wall. “I’m going to be a father.”
She chuckled as she looked up at him. “Are you okay with that?”
He grinned down at her. “Oh babe, I’m more than okay with that.”
She smiled, “I’m glad.”
“But you will have your parents and Sofia to deal with. You kept it from them too.”
“Crap,” she whispered.
He laughed as he shook his head. They both looked up when they heard gunfire and men screaming.
“Looks like Stefano and the men are here.”
She nodded and squealed when the door to the cellar opened. She sighed with relief when Stefano appeared.
“Let’s go,” he said in Italian as he motioned for them to follow him.
Ren helped her up the stairs and then pressed her against the wall as bullets flew past them.
“Not here,” she said with a grin as she looked up at him.
He grinned down at her. “Minx,” he whispered before he took her hand and pulled her behind him as they ducked behind Stefano.
“We got rid of several before we came to get you, but there seems to be more than we thought,” Stefano said as he pressed them against the wall and shot a man who came around a corner.
“They’re getting ready to go after the spies Dom has planted,” Ren said as he pulled his gun from his back.
Stefano nodded, “I had come back to tell Dom that they had discovered who Aurora really is and the fact that there are a lot of spies in their midst. We were in the middle of discussing it when your call came through.”
“How and when did you call my father?” Aurora asked as she looked at Ren.
Ren smiled, “when we were in the car, Angelo couldn’t see me from the back seat, and the driver is one of ours.”
Aurora burst into hysterical laughter as she held onto Ren’s arm.
Both men looked at her and shook their heads.
“We need to get her home,” Stefano said as he pointed at Aurora.
Ren shook his head. “First, we’re going to the hospital and have them make sure the baby is okay.”
“The baby is fine,” Aurora said with a huff.
Ren looked at her. “Humor me, babe, I just found out that I’m going to be a father.”
“Everything looks just fine,” the doctor said with a smile as he entered Aurora’s room at the hospital.
Aurora looked up at Ren with a smile. “See, I told you so.”
Ren smiled as he leaned forward and kissed her lips. “Yes, babe, but I wanted to hear the doctor say it.”
“It is about that time to have an ultrasound; would you like for us to set one up?” The doctor asked.
Aurora looked at Ren, who was grinning from ear to ear. With a laugh, she nodded to the doctor. The doctor smiled as he left the room to get the equipment.
“This is the first?” Ren asked as he looked at her.
She nodded, “I wouldn’t have done one without you, Ren. I promise. I just didn’t know how to tell you or Papa.”
Ren sighed as he kissed her lips. “I am always here for you, Aurora. You can always tell me anything,” he said as he laid his forehead against hers.
She smiled as she closed her eyes.
“Here we go,” a nurse said as she came into the room with the ultrasound machine.
“First?” The nurse asked as she smiled at them.
They both nodded, and the nurse nodded back.
“Will it hurt?” Ren asked as he moved out of the nurse’s way.
The nurse chuckled. “Nope, won’t hurt mama or the baby.”
“Ren, come over here,” Aurora said as she held up her right hand.
Ren moved to the other side of the bed and took hold of her hand.
“Okay,” the doctor said as he entered the room. “Are we ready to see the little one?”
Aurora and Ren nodded at the same time. The doctor smiled as the nurse pulled Aurora’s shirt up, then handed the wand to the doctor. The doctor lubed the wand then lightly pressed it to Aurora’s stomach, which for the first time, Ren noticed was starting to round the slightest bit. Why hadn’t he noticed that before?
Aurora sucked in a shocked breath, and Ren came undone.
“I thought you said it won’t hurt,” he snarled.
Aurora and the nurse laughed. “It didn’t hurt Ren; the lube is cold.”
Ren felt himself calm as he turned and watched the screen.
“There we are,” the doctor said as he pointed to the screen.
“Look at that,” Aurora said as a tear slid down her cheek.
Ren leaned closer and was barely able to see the little human that was his child.
“Amazing,” he whispered.
“Would you like to know the sex?” The doctor asked.
“Isn’t it early?” Aurora asked as she studied the screen.
The doctor laughed, “normally I would say yes. But your little guy is showing off,” he said as he pointed to the screen. “See there, it’s definitely a boy.”
Aurora stared at the screen with her mouth open. Indeed, the little one had his little legs spread open, and you could definitely see that he will be like his father.
“That’s my boy,” Ren said with a grin.
Aurora laughed as she looked at Ren. He had such a look on his face that made her heart skip a beat. Why had she been so afraid to tell him about the baby?
“Can you take a picture of that, doc?” Ren asked as he watched the screen.
The doctor laughed as he took a screenshot. When the little one changed position, the doctor took another screenshot.
“Here you are,” the nurse said as she handed them each a sonogram of their baby.
“I can’t believe we made this,” Ren said in awe.
Aurora smiled as she stared at the sonogram in her hand.
“Are you two ready to go?” Stefano asked as he entered the room.
The doctor finished cleaning off her stomach, then smiled at her as he moved out of the room, the nurse behind him with the machine.
“Look,” Aurora said with excitement as she handed Stefano the sonogram.
“Look at that,” Stefano said with a smile as he looked at the little one.
“Look at my boy,” Ren said as he handed Stefano the sonogram he held.
“Well, look at that, would yah, definitely a boy.”
Stefano said with a laugh.
Ren helped Aurora to her feet as Stefano handed her both pictures.
“Let’s get the princess home,” Stefano said as he headed for the door.
“Look at that!” Isabella said as she looked at the sonogram.
“I can’t believe you kept this a secret, all this time,” Sofia said as she looked at the picture in her mother’s hand.
“I’m sorry,” Aurora said with a frown.
“It’s all done and over with now,” Dom said as he looked at the picture Ren had handed him. “A grandson,” he said with a grin.
“What are we doing about Sunday, Papa?” Aurora asked as she looked at her father.
Riccardo Mancini took the sonogram from Dom and smiled. “Once Trevisani figures out what had transpired in the cellar, he may not try for anything on Sunday. But he may come after you, Son,” he said as he looked up at his long-lost son. In the space of twenty-four hours, he has gained his son back, and a grandson to boot.
Not to mention a new daughter. He thought as he looked at the beautiful Aurora Romano.
“I say, we stay prepared, and you two stay out of town,” Dom said as he looked between Aurora and Ren.
Ren grinned at Aurora. “Don’t worry, we can find other things to do.”
Aurora’s cheeks turned bright red as she turned away from everyone.
“Don’t be so obvious, Son,” Riccardo said as he shook his head.
“Did we get all the spies out of Trevisani’s house in time?” Sofia asked as she handed the sonogram to Jayme.
“Just barely,” Stefano said from across the room, “one was shot as we were escaping, but he’ll be okay.”
“Good,” Sofia said with a nod.
“I’ll call Bradley in the morning and set up some stakeouts,” Ren said as he took the sonogram from his father and grinned down at his son.
“I’m tired,” Aurora said as she stretched and yawned.
“Time for mama to get some sleep,” Sofia said with a smile.
Aurora smiled at her sister, then squealed when Ren lifted her into his arms.
“See you all tomorrow,” Ren said as he left the room, laughter following after them.
“I can’t believe my father is so understanding of all of this,” Aurora said with a yawn as she laid her head on his shoulder.
Ren smiled, “he knew,” he whispered.
Her eyes popped open, and she stared at him.
He chuckled, then told her his conversation with her father, and the fact that he gave his blessing.
She smiled as she cuddled against him. “I love you, Lorenzo,” she whispered.
He grinned, “I love you too, Aurora.”
