Chapter 1

I have always hated winter. To me,it was the cruelest season of all. It snatched the life out of everything beautiful.Ruining the beauty of nature. Making everything seem lifeless.

Shoveling snow was the least favorite task of mine. I had way better things to do. Like nothing of course. my subconscious mocked. But I was not as repulsed as everyday though. Cause it might be the last time I do it. I was leaving for Romania tonight. To search for answers that I should have searched earlier. After mum's death, my world came crashing down. I was alone. All alone. With no one to turn to, no shoulder to cry on. I remember the time I used to come home from school after being bullied for hours. Mum was there for me. Letting me cry, telling me to let it all out. But the still healing scars on my hand tells a different story now. After battling with cancer for years, she finally lost the war. Leaving me to deal with the aftermath. My mum was a single mother. Dad left after my birth. Or so I have been told. Why he left? I have no idea. And that was the question I was hell bent on finding the answer to.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed from the pocket of my jacket. the name 'Jake' popped on my screen. I answered it while walking back to my house.

"What's up, Ava"

"Nothing much. Just finished packing."

"You don't have to do this, Ava. You-"

"I'm sure about this Jake. You can't stop me now. Nothing can stop me now"

"Are you sure?"

"Well then, I will not stop you if you want to do this. But remember, if you get in trouble, the first thing you do is call me. got it?" i smiled at his warm but stern brotherly tone.

"Of course. Who else will I call?" He chuckled at that.

"Want me to drop you at the airport today?"

"Sure." I answered.

"OK. When do you want me to pick you up?"

"4:30?" I asked.

"Sounds great. See you then"

"Yeah" With that, I ended the call.

Jake is my mum's boss's son. I met him when mum took me to 'Bring your child to work day'. He and I almost immediately bonded. Since then, he has been my best and only friend.

I looked at the clock and it was 3:43 pm. I quickly snacked on a sandwich and got ready.

I peeped at mum's room for the last time. Her scent was still lingering in the room. My vision clouded with tears. But immediately composed myself because it was no time to cry.

Grabbing my passport and other necessities I got out.

By the time I was there, Jake was already there smiling while leaning against the car.

"Ready?" He asked.

"Yes" I replied smiling.

Here goes nothing......
