Chapter 13

“Everything ok with Gracie?”

“Oh yes, she is spending the night with Kate and Joey. He will drop her off tomorrow for the ride.”

Jake’s brain went into overdrive and he had a plan to develop rather quickly.

“Listen, I have to take care of a few things. I will see you tomorrow then?”

“Sure...I guess I will see you around…”

He nodded and turned to leave, then stopped. He turned slowly back around and looked at her with a deep longing in his eyes. She stood there just watching him as she took one big step towards her and wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close. She took a sharp breath in as she felt his hard and muscular body against hers. It felt so comfortable and right like that, in his arms again. She didn’t want him to leave but knew this was going to be dangerous for her. She didn’t want to get hurt again and she had Gracie to think about. But damn it he felt so good! His body was better than the last time she had seen it or felt it!

He lowered his head and whispered in her ear, “Think about me when I am gone,” with his warm breath tickling her, letting his lips graze her cheek as he stood again.

She was rooted to her spot and wasn’t breathing correctly as he put on his sunglasses and smiled as he walked down the stairs and out the building. She watched as he got into his large black SUV and drove away.

“Oh god, I am in BIG trouble!” she said out loud.

She sat back down and started working on ranch business, trying desperately to clear her head from all thoughts regarding Jake Doogin. A few hours later she stretched and called it a day. It was four o’clock at that point and she needed something to eat. She went down the stairs and noticed that all the afternoon appointments were done and the ranch hands were gone too. It was a quiet Saturday and she liked just hearing the animals making sounds. She noticed that a black vehicle was coming down the road and made a turn to the ranch side. She didn’t recognize it as it stopped in front of her. The driver rolled the window down.

“Can I help you?” she asked the older gentleman as she saw another vehicle pull up behind that one.

“Yes miss, I am looking for Samantha Hills,” he said reading off of a paper.

“Well you just found her. How can I help you?”

“I have a delivery for you Miss Hills. Can you sign here please?” He said as he handed her a clipboard to sign.

She signed it and gave it back to him. She watched as he then got out of the car and handed her a large manila envelope and told her to have a good day. He walked back to the other vehicle and opened the door.

“Wait!! I don’t understand!”

“Everything is in the envelope Miss Hills. Have a good day!” and he got in and they left.

She opened the package and saw keys, papers and a note. She opened it and couldn’t believe what she was reading!

’Sammy, please just accept this as me trying to make amends. Think of it as back child support. I want you and our daughter to be safe. Call me when you get this, my number is still the same...Dinner tonight? You can tell me all about Gracie

I love you,

Jake’

She was stunned as she looked at the brand new SUV in front of her. It was exactly what she wanted. How did he know? She remembered the brochure was on her desk, he must have seen it. She looked over the paperwork and saw that it only had her name on it and was paid in full. She just looked over everything and was speechless. He had a dozen red roses on the passenger seat laying there. She pulled out her phone and hit the number, she still had him programmed into her phone.

“Hi…”

“Jake you didn’t have to do this! This is really too much! I don’t know if I should accept it…”

“I told you to think of it as child support. I do want you both safe. Please just accept it, Samantha.”

She sighed. It was really very over the top, but so sweet at the same time. He didn’t have to do it.

“Ok...Thank you Jake. I do really love it.”

“I am glad. You’re welcome.”

“Thanks for the flowers too. They are beautiful.”

“It was my pleasure. What about dinner?”

“It’s not a date.”

“I know, it’s just us talking about Gracie.”

Sammy sat and chewed on her lip, thinking and before she could decline again, Jake said, “Be ready at seven; wear a skirt and your hair down”

“It’s not a date!”

“Bye Sammy!” and he ended the call with a smile on his face.

He was sitting on the couch in the living room of his childhood home as he laughed. He was still there when his dad came in from the exercise room to get a bottle of water.

“Why do you look like the cat that ate the canary?” Mike asked after he took a long drink.

“I talked to Sammy today. I apologized and told her what happened. She accepted my apology,” he replied.

“That’s great son! I am proud of you. What are you going to do next?”

“Well I bought her a car. She was worried about dipping out of her savings to get one and didn’t want Gracie to stop doing her activities. So I saw the SUV she wanted on her desk and bought it and just had it delivered. Do you know she wants to buy a house? Soon?”

“She has mentioned it before; I didn’t know she had a time frame. That was really a selfless thing to do, Jake. Was she surprised?”

“She was shocked and didn’t give me too much grief over it, thankfully.”

Mike laughed and asked, “What do you want to do for dinner?”

“Well, Dad, you are on your own for dinner. I am taking Sammy out to dinner. We are going to talk about Gracie. She is going to let me meet her tomorrow…She is going to introduce me as her dad! I can’t wait, Dad!”

“I am really happy for you Son. She is an amazing little girl. I can’t tell you how much I love her. She is so special.”

“I can’t wait! I better go shower. I am taking Sammy to that steak place on Route 35. I already made reservations for the back booth.”

“Is this a date?”

“For me yes, for Sammy- she said no, but I plan on changing her mind.”

“Be careful son.”

“I will Dad.”
