Chapter 4

Ava’s mind was reeling. She heard Carol enter the room with Emily and did as she was asked, showing Carol how Eric reacted to her touch but not Emily’s, but she was not paying attention. She had found her mate. She was ecstatic, but also heartbroken. What was she supposed to do with him in a coma? They couldn’t complete the mating with him unconscious.

“Ava?” Carol asked. Ava was jerked back to the present and realized that Carol had been trying to talk to her.

“I’m sorry,” she said, looking at the two women next to her. “What did you say?”

“I said that this is a strange development,” Carol said, giving her a concerned look. “Do you have any idea why Eric would be reacting to your touch? Has anything else been happening?” Ava looked at them both. She knew what was happening but she wasn’t sure she should be telling the other two women. How could she explain what she was feeling and what had been happening? And, if they did know, would they allow her to continue to watch over him? The thought of not being able to see him was almost too much for her to bear.

“No, nothing,” she said after a moment. Emily and Carol looked at each other, clearly not sure they believed her, but unwilling to push the issue.

“Ok,” Carol said with a slight sigh. “Just make sure that you let us know if anything else happens. I’ll have Emily continue doing the baths in light of this development.”

“No!” Ava interrupted, a little too loudly. Both women stared at her, confused.

“I mean,” Ava fumbled, trying to find the right way to phrase it without raising suspicion. “I don’t want to put more of a burden on anyone. I’m here to help so let me help. I don’t mind.”

Carol looked at her for a moment before nodding and motioning for Emily to leave with her. Once both women were gone Ava let out a breath she hadn’t realized she had been holding. That had almost been bad, but she couldn’t bear the thought of another woman touching her mate. Even if it was to give his unconscious body a sponge bath. She smiled as she realized that her mate was so close. She had finally found him! But now came the tough part. How was she supposed to break the curse and wake him?

Ava moaned as Eric’s hands ran lightly over her bare skin, his mouth once again kissing her sensitive neck. She gripped his back tightly, unwilling to let go and wanting his own bare skin even closer to her.

“Eric...” she breathed. “Please...” She didn’t know what she was asking for, only that she wanted more of him and she wanted it now. She felt Eric shake his head and opened her eyes to see him staring at her. For once she could see his face and realized that his eyes were the most beautiful shade of blue she had ever seen.

“Ava,” he said with a sad look in his eyes. “I want you more than you could possibly know, but I won’t have our first time be here in your dreams.”

“I don’t understand,” she said, trying to pull him back to her. “I want you, I need you.”

“I need you too,” he said with a sad smile. “But not like this.”

Then how? How do I wake you?” He smiled sadly and shook his head before letting her go and stepping away. She reached out to him but he was suddenly lost to sight by a thick fog.

Ava shot up in bed with a gasp. Her dreams had never been like that and she didn’t know what it meant. It had all felt so real and then Eric had disappeared. She glanced at her alarm clock and saw that it was almost time to get up anyway but she didn’t move. Her heart was still racing and she felt tears pricking her eyes. She had to find some way to wake Eric up, but she didn’t know how.

She quickly shut off the alarm before it could go off and ran her hands through her hair in frustration. It wasn’t fair! Why was she doomed to find her mate only to have him be out of reach? She was so close to him and yet she couldn’t have him. Not until he woke up from his coma. And even then, would he want her? He’d lost so much of his life she wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t want to be saddled with a mate immediately upon waking, but the thought made her heart ache. Although it was uncommon for someone to reject their mate, after all they were born specifically for you and were your other half, it was not unheard of. Ava honestly didn’t know what she would do if Eric rejected her.

She felt her wolf growl at the very thought and couldn’t help but smile. At least they were on the same page. She thought back to her dream. It had seemed so real. She could still feel Eric’s mouth on her neck and his body under her hands. Could that be real? She had never heard of mates being able to affect dreams but that didn’t mean it was impossible. After all, he had been in a coma for 10 years which should have been impossible with his shifter healing abilities. She was more convinced than ever that Eric was the victim of a curse.

She thought briefly about who would have wanted him cursed and then pushed the thought away. She had her suspicions about who he was, but without knowing for sure she couldn’t know who would want him out of the picture. Besides, right now she was more concerned with waking him up than why he was in a coma. The trouble was, she didn’t know where to start. If it was magically caused, which she was almost positive it was, then no normal cure would work. She would have to find a magical cure and she was sure that many had been tried in the 10 years he had been at the clinic. She would have to ask Carol, discreetly, what treatments had been tried. She didn’t want to waste her time repeating things that weren’t going to work.

Looking at the clock again she silently cursed and jumped out of bed. She had let her mind wander for too long and she was in danger of being late to the clinic. She got ready in record time and made it to the clinic right at 8am, rushing in the door so fast that Emily giggled at her silently. Ava just shrugged sheepishly and gave her a small wave before heading into the back to sit with Eric.

She had brought her laptop with her today so that she could do some research. She was determined to talk to Carol on her lunch break but she also knew she needed to find some things out for herself. She quickly settled in to her chair, giving Eric a quick, loving glance as she did so. It was torturous to not be able to touch him and claim him as her own, but she knew it would only make the mating urges worse if she teased herself.

Pulling out her laptop she took a deep breath and logged on to the pack web. The pack web was the source of all information related to the River Pack and was only accessible by pack members. Similar to facebook, pack members could write posts for everyone in the pack to see such as events that were happening. But there was also a section on pack history which included all current and past members of the pack. It was here that Ava was hoping to find information on Eric, assuming that was his name.

She typed “Eric” into the search bar and watched as hundreds of Erics popped up on her screen. She groaned, this was the problem with belonging to a pack that was as old as hers was. Member history went back over one hundred years so there was bound to be a lot of Erics during that time. She sighed and quickly resigned herself to the task. She couldn’t move forward without knowing who Eric was. And if this didn’t pan out... she didn’t want to think about that.
