Sequel: Chapter 6
“You guys came back early,” Tessa said the moment she opened the door. She was wearing a pink colour sweater and her hair was tied up in a bun. She always made this hairstyle when she was working on her designs. It helped her to concentrate more and not get bothered by her hair while working.
I nodded with a slight smile and entered the house with Sophia sleeping in my arms. “I lost her at the mall today,” I confessed. She looked furious but she didn’t yell at me as that would wake Sophie up. She took her from my arms and strolled towards her room to put Sophie on the bed. A few minutes later, she came back outside, fuming with rage. “How could you be so reckless Adam?”
“I’m sorry. I met a colleague at the mall and spoke with him for a while and when I turned to look for her, she was missing,” I admitted.
“Where did you find her then?”
“I found her near the ice cream parlour with Adaline,” I replied. The moment she heard Adaline’s name, all the colour from her face had vanished. She had an indistinct expression on her face and I couldn’t infer what she was thinking at the moment.
“Did you tell her?” She questioned sceptically.
“Did you tell her about Sophie’s dad?” She asked to make her previous question more understandable.
“Obviously not Tess. I have already told you, I will take your secret to my grave,” I said firmly to make her believe that I still kept my part of the promise. She sighed in relief. “I’m sorry, I thought you would end up telling her everything,” she said in a low voice.
No matter how much I wanted to do that, I knew I couldn’t. I couldn’t risk telling Adaline the truth. “I’m going to keep my promise Tess, you don’t have to worry about that,” I said to gain her confidence.
“It’s just that... I saw the way you looked at her in the party,” she mumbled which sent a shiver down my spine.
“I don’t know what you mean Tess,” I said in a polite tone, hoping she wouldn’t stretch this topic any further.
“You still like her, don’t you?” She asked looking right into my eyes. I didn’t know how to escape this situation, I wanted to run away. I didn’t want to confront my feelings for Adaline, that too in front of Tessa.
“No, I don’t.” I lied to her and maybe she sensed it because she didn’t look that pleased with my reply. “I still don’t understand why she left you. She lost her chance with a good man,” she stated and walked back to her desk where all her designs were kept.
I realised it was best to leave now as she’s busy with her work and won’t get up from her desk for an hour or so. I swiftly made my way towards my bedroom and closed the door behind me. I removed my shirt and lied down on my bed remembering about all the events that occurred today.
I couldn’t remove Adaline’s face from my head. When she saw me with Sophie today, she looked so heartbroken. I had a sudden urge to go and comfort her but I know I have lost that chance years back. She must probably be thinking that I’m extremely happy with my family but little does she know that I’m miserable.
I wonder what would have happened if I had made a different choice back then. You would have shattered her dreams. My conscious answered. I sighed in grief since it was true. I wished I hadn’t received that goddamn call from my father that day. I wished he wasn’t an asshole whose one mistake fucked up with my entire life. All this is his fault. I hate him so much but there’s nothing I can do about it. I can’t ruin my happy family. I can’t make my mom unhappy. I can’t unravel everything for a selfish reason for wanting to get Adaline back into my life. My father did make a mistake, but he wanted a second chance and I gave him that. I gave him a chance to correct his faults.
Adaline and Eric together won the singing competition and I was so happy for them. I gave them a big hug before they left to collect their trophies. My phone started buzzing, it was a call from my dad. There was a lot of noise inside, so I decided to go out and receive his call. “I got a call from my dad, I’ll be back in a minute,” I said to Racheal before leaving. She nodded and I hurried outside.
“What’s up dad?” I asked nonchalantly.
“Can you come to my office right now, it’s urgent,” he replied which alarmed me a bit. Dad has never asked me to come to his office before, something is definitely wrong.
"I’ll be there in ten minutes,” I said and rushed to his office.
When I entered his cabin, I saw a man already seated on the sofa. He looked vaguely familiar but I couldn’t recall where I had seen him. Dad sat right opposite to him, his back facing towards the door so he didn’t know about my arrival yet. The man looked at me and got up from his seat. He smiled and said, “Look who’s here.” My dad immediately turned around to face me. He looked pale. The man came and hugged me. “It’s good to finally meet you, Adam,” he said with a huge smile on his face. I couldn’t comprehend what was going on. Why is this man being so nice to me? Why is dad looking so vulnerable?
The man sensed my confusion and asked my dad to explain to me everything. I stared at him for a while but he didn’t utter a single word instead he just peered down the entire time.
“What’s wrong dad? Why are you so quiet?” I asked curiously
Dad still didn’t say anything. The man scoffed and said, “Let me tell you what’s happening son. Your dad was having an affair with his secretary.” The moment he said those words, I felt like the ground crashing. Dad was cheating? How could he? Mom is going to be so heartbroken if she finds out. I gazed at him to make sure if what this man was speaking is real or not. He avoided my eye contact which was enough for me to decipher that all this was genuine.
“You see..the affair...I don’t give a shit about it but what I do care about is my money and that bitch ran away with it.” The man continued. He was so furious that he banged the desk with his hand. I shiver ran down my spine. This man doesn’t look like someone you can mess with.
Finally, my dad decided to speak but what he said made me realise that we’re doomed. “I’m going to be bankrupt, son. I borrowed a huge sum of money from this man for a project but she ran away with all of it,” he confessed.
You gotta be kidding me, dad. Just when I thought everything is going perfect in my life you had to fuck it all up.
“But you can save your father if you want..” The man suddenly spoke. I looked at him with a confused expression. Why does he look so familiar?
My dad interjected, “I don’t think he’s going to agree with you, Mr Peterson.”
Now I remember. Mr Peterson, Tessa’s father. He’s also one of the trustees of our school. That’s why he looked so familiar.
“Then I’ll have to tell the entire town about your little affair,” he threatened my dad. No, that can’t happen. Even though I know what dad has done is wrong but I can’t let mom know about this. It’ll break her heart and I can’t bear to ruin her happiness.
“What do I need to do?” I asked. I couldn’t let one mistake of my dad ruin everything we had. I need to make things right. I need to save my family.
The man beamed with happiness and said, “It’s simple Adam. I am ready to fund for the project again if you agree to date my girl Tessa.”
“What? This doesn’t even make sense. For your information Sir, Tessa is already dating a guy named Mike.”
“But that asshole left my daughter and now she’s pregnant with his kid,” he said furiously which surprised me. Tessa was pregnant with Mike’s kid? This is news to me.
“So you want me to take care of your pregnant daughter?” I asked sarcastically since I couldn’t understand what was going on inside this man’s head.
“Tessa is not ready to abort that child so I want you to take the responsibility instead.”
“What do you mean?”
“Date her. Tell everyone it’s your child. I just want to save my girl from the embarrassment. You don’t realize how difficult it’ll be for her if they find out that she’s a single mother,” he said with concern. I could understand that he was trying to do all this to protect Tessa but I won’t ever agree to this because there’s only one girl I love and that’s Adaline.
I cleared my voice before speaking. “Sir, I’m sorry for what happened with Tessa but I don’t think I can do this.” The concern in his eyes suddenly changed into hostility. He definitely wasn’t happy with my response. “I promise you I’ll return all your money in some time. I have been selected by a club and the moment I start playing some matches, I’ll get paid. So don’t worry, every penny of yours will be returned just promise me that my mom won’t ever find out about this,” I said in a low tone to not anger Mr. Peterson any further.
He laughed at my response. He kept laughing for a minute which made both dad and me very uneasy but we didn’t dare to say a word. “I knew you would say that,” he said and made his way towards me with a smile. “But what if I tell you..that the club has decided to not take you in anymore,” he added which made me freeze in my place. That’s not possible. This man can’t be so evil.
“Don’t forget that I’m the trustee of your school, I have my contacts,” he said and smirked. I looked at my dad and saw the astonishment on his face. Maybe he didn’t know about this too.
"Now with no club to play with, how are you going to pay me back my money Adam?" He asked in a challenging tone.
“What if I still disagree to do what you said?” I asked to grasp how cruel this man could be.
He gave a small smile to me before saying, “What’s her name? Ahh, I recall now...Adaline Williams, isn’t it? she’s the girl who won in the singing competition today. Do you want me to take that away from her too?”
“She’s not even related to all this. Don’t drag her into this mess,” I said firmly. I couldn’t jeopardise Adaline’s dream because of my dad’s fault.
“Well, then the choice is simple Adam. Date my daughter and claim that child as yours then both your mom and Adaline will be happy forever,” he said with a smile.
I had to make a choice. I could either let dad go bankrupt, tell the entire truth to mom and break our family or pretend to be Tessa’s boyfriend and save my family and Addie’s dream of becoming a singer. The answer was pretty clear. I had to sacrifice myself if I wanted Addie and mom to be happy.
“Okay. I’ll do what you say. But promise me that mom will never find out the truth and you have to stay the fuck away from Adaline,” I said which immediately brought a smile on his face.
“Deal. But there’s one more thing, Adam,”
“Tessa shouldn’t find out about all this. She’s innocent. You can hate me as much as you want, but my girl should never discover the truth,” he said before leaving the cabin.
