Chapter 8

“Do you have any idea how much I hate Brad?” Racheal yelled on the phone.

“Calm down babes. You are hurting my ears,” I said while holding the phone far away from my ears. I never knew that her high pitch voice could be so annoying.

“I am so angry at him Adaline,” she said while vilifying Brad. Apparently, Brad ditched her for some hot girl. They weren’t exactly in a relationship but she had started liking him and suddenly she realized that the only reason he hung out with her was to get laid and the moment he found a hotter girl, he left her.

“It’s okay. Shit happens Rae.” Those were the only words I could say to comfort her.

“Yes, I know, shit happens only with me,” she said in a very low voice. I felt bad for her, but I didn’t really know what to say. We have the same conversation almost every other week since Racheal keeps jumping from one guy to another.

“Anyways I am coming to pick you up so get that pretty ass of your’s out of your bed and freshen up,” she said abruptly in her cocky tone.

“But Adam is coming to pick me up. You know he will be angry if I don’t go with him.”

“He just texted me, he wanted me to pick you up.”

“Why did he text you and not me?” I asked totally bewildered with Adam’s actions.

“I don’t know. You can ask him later babe.”

“Yeah. Okay.”

“I’ll be there in ten.”

“Sure. I’ll get changed by then,” I said and hung up on her.

“Do you mean that Jamie is not dead? She is still alive?” Felicia asked me while we were discussing the movie ‘A Walk to Remember’ whilst waiting for our teacher to arrive.

“No Fel. I didn’t mean that. I just think that though she is dead for everybody, she is still alive in Landon’s heart.”

“I guess you are right. Do you remember what Landon said in the end? Our love is like the wind, you can’t see it but you can feel it.”

“So does that mean you love that movie too?”

“Of course Adaline. Who doesn’t? I wish I could get a guy like Landon.”

“I wish the same too.”

“Adaline, have you ever been in love?” Felicia popped that question out of the blue. The question startled me at first since I had never really talked about love with Felicia. These conversations were always with Rachel. Fel and I just talked about casual stuff never something serious like this.

“Umm... I don’t know,” I said because presently I couldn’t think clearly.

“What do you mean by I don’t know? Didn’t you and Adam ever date?”

“Of course not Fel. He is just my best friend. I can never imagine dating him.”

“But I always thought you guys secretly liked each other.”

Woah! How come she never told me this before?

“What makes you say so Fel?”

“It’s not just me. Everyone in school thinks the same.”

“I don’t understand this. Why does everyone think so?”

“Maybe because you guys are together since your childhood days and practically you both can’t live without each other. ‘Adam and Adaline’ it’s like an unbreakable bond and I seriously envy you for this. Do you have any idea how many girls want to fit into your shoes?”

Before I could give my justification, Ms. Norris had already entered the classroom which demanded us to stop our conversation abruptly.

She started teaching us some chapter which I have no idea about since my brain was clouded with what Felicia just said. We were together since our childhood days is right. We practically can’t live without each other is right. Our bond is unbreakable is also right. But a lot of girls want to fit into my shoes right now. Is that true? Should I be feeling insecure about this? What if some girl took Adam away from me? Adam wouldn’t agree to that right? Am I overthinking about this or should I just talk to Adam about it?

My mind was filled with so many thoughts but it all got shattered when I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw a message from Adam.

I am sorry Addie. Can’t meet you after school today. Will see you tomorrow. Love ya.′

‘Why didn’t you come to pick me up today?’

‘I was busy.’

‘Doing what?’

‘Addie, what’s wrong with you? Why are you questioning me so much?’

“Ms. Williams can you stop with whatever you are doing right now and concentrate on your work please,” Ms. Norris said while giving me a very ugly look.

“I am sorry Ms. Norris,” I said and quietly started turning the pages of my book. Even though I was pretending to study but, in reality, I was just drowned into my thoughts.

Should I be insecure about other girls in Adam’s life?

It was lunch break and I was making my way towards the canteen area to meet up with my gang when I heard Eric call for my name.

“Hey. What’s up?” He said with a big smile on his face.

“Nothing. Just going to meet my friends. Wanna join?”

“Sure. You seem a little disturbed Adaline, is everything okay?” he suddenly asked which caught me a little off guard.

“Its nothing. I am just hungry. Let’s go for lunch,” I said and grabbed his hand to take him to the canteen area with me.

We were heading towards our usual table where our whole gang is normally seated, but someone forced me to stop my steps. I couldn’t believe my eyes right now. Am I dreaming or is this the truth? Why the hell was Tessa sitting on my seat and laughing like that with Adam? And why is Adam even talking to her? Doesn’t he know that we are sworn enemies? I was about to take my steps back and go out when Ethan suddenly saw me and called for my name.

“Join in Adaline,” he said and pointed to the empty chair beside him.

Why is everybody acting so normal? Am I dreaming?

I wanted to yell at the top of my voice but sadly I didn’t, I just quietly sat beside him and Eric joined in too.

“What the hell is she doing here Ethan?” I whispered in his ears.

“Nothing. She is Adam’s partner for a history project so they are just talking about it.”

“Oh my god! We should totally do that. Our project will be the best of all,” Tessa said loudly to make sure I heard those words.

“Yes let’s do it,” Adam replied and took a sip from his orange juice.

Tessa swiftly grabbed his hands and said, “You are so smart and amazing. I wonder why you are still single.”

Such a flirt she is!

Adam chuckled lightly. “Buzz off Tessa, we will talk later.”

Tessa was surprised by his indifferent reaction but she smiled softly and said, “Okay. I have your number. I’ll give you a call babe.”

Babe? Like seriously? I was done watching her flirt with Adam!

“I am leaving,” I said and got up from the table.

“Addie but you just got here. Sit down, we need to talk,” Adam said which pissed Tessa off. She looked at me with a foul face and then got up to leave.

“What the hell were you doing with her Adam?” I yelled at him the moment she was gone.

“Discussing the history project Addie.”

“And why the hell was she sitting on my seat? That’s my seat, Adam! Nobody takes that seat.”

“Calm down Addie. It’s just a seat. What’s wrong with you?” He asked totally annoyed with the fight which was just happening.

“Why the hell are you ignoring me? Why didn’t you come to pick me up?”

I was so mad this time that Ethan just guessed that it was time to leave us alone so he made an excuse for grabbing more food and took Eric along with him.

“You said you were busy and you can’t come to pick me up and here you are, flirting with that bitch whom I hate so much.”

“Addie stop overreacting? What the hell is wrong with you? All this just because I was talking to Tessa? She isn’t that bad.”

What? Did he seriously say that?

“Oh really? Do you think she is not bad? Then why don’t you date her Adam? Anyways you are single since four months now, go and get into her pants.”

“Addie? Are you kidding me? I don’t even understand the reason for this. What the hell did I even do upset you?”

“Nothing. I am sorry. I’ll just leave.” I said and walked out of the canteen area.

This was just so too much for me to handle. Why did I even yell at him? Just because he didn’t come to pick me up today? Or was it because of Tessa flirting with him? What is wrong with me? Am I being jealous right now? Is this what insecurity is all about?

Arrgghhhh! I am so messed up in my head right now. I think I just need some time alone, Netflix and chill minus the chill, yes that’s what I need right now!

Binge-watching is my favourite thing in this world. I completed the entire Harry Potter series in one go along with ice cream and popcorn. This definitely made me clear my head a little and shift my attention from the fight that Adam and I had this morning. I kind of feel it was my fault but I don’t know what to do. Should I just call him up? Maybe I could talk to him tomorrow? But what if he doesn’t want to talk to me? I was snapped out of my reverie with the sound of the doorbell ringing. Mom and dad had said that they were going to be home late tonight, how come they arrived so early?

I got up from my sofa and ran to open the door, in front of me stood a very handsome boy wearing plain white shorts and a black top making his abs really distinct for me to admire.

“Adam,” I said with a very big smile on my face.

“Umm..did I disturb you?” He asked shifting his weight from one foot to another in an uncomfortable way.

“No. I was just thinking about you.”

“So can you call me inside? It’s a little cold out here.”

I laughed listening to his statement, “Yes. Come in.”

He grinned looking at me and directly went to sit on the sofa, he was acting as if nothing had happened between us this morning at school.

“Were you watching the Harry Potter series again Addie?” He asked while stuffing his mouth with my ice cream.

“Yes, I was. Adam I wa-”

“Stop it, Addie. I know what you will say. You are angry at yourself for fighting with me. It’s okay, I get it. We are cool so you need not worry.”

“But it was wrong of me to snap at you like that.”

“I know. You are a short-tempered girl but I still love you okay?” He said and pinched my nose.

“Ow! That hurts you moron,” I said and slapped his arm. I was so elated by hearing those words from Adam. He loves me even though I was a bitch to him today. If it was any other guy, he would have probably started plotting revenge for me by now but Adam was different. My best friend knew all my flaws but still accepted me exactly the way I was.

“Where are George and Melissa?” he asked me while continuing to eat my share my ice cream.

“They went out. Some meeting I guess,” I replied and started collecting all the bits of popcorns that had fallen on the floor.

“Oh okay.” I heard him say while switching on the TV to watch his favorite series Vampire Diaries.

“Adam,” I said in a very low voice, afraid that I would disturb him.

“Yeah?” He replied nonchalantly.

“Just promise me that what happened today won’t happen again. I hate fighting with you. It’s seriously the last thing I would ever wish for.”

Adam suddenly switched off the television and turned to look at me. He gave me a small smile and took my hands in his, “I promise that I would never let anything like that happen again.”

Those words gave me the assurance that I needed and I just smiled back at him.

“Why don’t we set up some rules Addie?”

“What rules?” I asked

“Okay! So if I am ever pissed at you which by the way is never going to happen, I will call you by your full name instead of just Addie. That’s your cue to understand that I am pissed at you and you better do something or else our friendship is over.”

“Fine. I like that idea.”

“Why were you so angry about me talking to Tessa anyway? It’s not like she is my friend or anything, we were just talking about the project.”

“Project? Did you see the way she was flirting with you?”

“That’s my charm, Addie. All girls fall for it,” he said with a smirk.

“Yes. All girls but not me. She was flirting with you only because I was around.”

“Aww, Addie. Don’t take all the credits. She couldn’t resist my good looks that’s all.”

“Such an arrogant guy you are,” I said slapping his arms again.

“Don’t hurt my feelings Addie,” he said and made a puppy face.

“Fine. How’s your thing with Jessica going? I heard you really impressed her with the flowers and all.”

“Yes, I did. You girls are silly. Just by receiving some flowers, you become all excited and shit.”

“Hey! Don’t say that. I am a girl too.”

“Are you kidding me, Addie? When was the last time you acted as one?”

“What do you mean Adam?”

“I mean look at you. You haven’t dated anyone since fifth grade Addie. That Blake guy was your first and the last boyfriend I guess.”

“I didn’t find anyone that worthy yet,” I said in my defense.

“Addie just admit it. You are into girls, I know it. Just so you know, we will still be best friends even if you confess to me about being a-”

Before he could complete his sentence, I hit him so hard that his entire arm turned red.

“What the hell Addie?”

“Don’t shout. You were hurting my feelings so I hurt you instead,” I said and smiled.

“That wasn’t the right thing to do Addie. You are in big trouble now.” He said and started making his way towards me. He was so intimidating at that moment that I did the only thing I could do to save myself and that was to pour my glass of water on his face. This made him even angrier and he started running behind me, we were running in circles in the hall room when suddenly the doorbell rang which made both of us pause.

I secretly thanked whoever it was who rang the doorbell, I was saved from Adam. Fortunately, It was mom and dad. They were back from their meeting and were very glad to see Adam at home. They started talking with him and he just stood there answering all their questions meanwhile waiting for a chance to take his revenge on me but sadly he couldn’t.

The night ended with Adam being totally frustrated about not getting his revenge on me.

“I’ll get my revenge, Addie.” He said while he stood on the doorstep to leave for his home.

“We will see Adam,” I chuckled lightly.

“Goodnight Addie.”

“Night Adam.”
