Chapter 1

Jamie’s POV

I shoved my clothes into my backpack knowing that he would be back soon. Once I finished packing my makeup, shoes, clothes and money, I grabbed a smaller bag and put Lilly’s belongings in it as well.

I looked up at the clock on the wall and noticed that it was almost eight. He always gets home at exactly eight o’clock every night. I went into Lilly’s room and gently picked her up before going down the stairs and ran down the sidewalk. We finally were free. I needed to get Lilly out of this house.

“Fucking A. What the hell is this doing here?”

I turned around and saw my dad stumble towards the house, running into a light-pole.

The idiot got drunk again. As always.

I tried to be as quiet as I could until I hit a garbage can that was next to the curb.

I ran away from him as quickly as I could and just when I thought I was in the clear, I ran into a stop sign near the sidewalk that knocked me down.

“Whoa, are you okay?”

I looked up, laying my eyes on the most handsome man I’ve ever seen. His dark brown hair was just long enough for me to run my fingers through while he pleases me. God, Jamie. Shut up.

He had to of been at least 6′4, towering over my 5′3 frame and his eyes were so intimidating that I had to look away. “Are you okay?”

“Huh? Oh, yeah. I’m fine.”

“Jamie? Where the hell do you think you’re going?”

I gasped when I saw my father start to approach me.

“Answer my question or else...”

“Leave her alone.”

My father looked at the handsome stranger and scowled. “Who the fuck are you?”

“I’m the one who’s going to beat your ass if you don’t leave her alone.”

He scowled and walked away without another word.

“Thank you. You didn’t have to do that for us.”

“Oh, it was my pleasure. Do you need a ride?”

Should I lie to him or should I be honest? “I’m uhh... I’m taking her to my friend’s house.”

“Are you sure? I don’t mind.”

“I’m positive.”

He nodded and grabbed something out of his sweatshirt pocket, handing me a card. “Here’s my number. Please feel free to call me if you have to.”

“Okay, thank you umm...”

“I’m Jamie.”

“Call me sometime.”

Nodding, I walked back to my house and put Lilly in the back seat. “Mommy? I’m cold.”

Lilly was only four, but she’s gotten to be very good at talking for a kid her age.

“I know baby, we’ll find somewhere to go.”

After searching for a half hour, I went to a shitty motel downtown just for a few nights.

“Hello, ma’am. How may I help you?”

“Hi, yes. I was wondering if you have a room available for a few days.”

Nodding, he handed me a key. “That will be 150.”

Reaching into my bag, I grabbed my wallet and took out one hundred dollar bill and a fifty. “Here you go.”

“Would you like room service, ma’am?”

“Yes, please.”

“What would you like?”

“A glass of milk, two grilled cheese and do you have wine?”

He shook his head. “We only have beer.”

“Do you have a Mike’s Hard Lemonade?”

“We may have a few.”

“Thank you.”

I went to our room and put my bag on a chair before changing Lilly into her pajamas. “I’m tired, mommy.”

“Don’t you want some food, sweetie?”

She nodded. “Yes.”

After twenty minutes, our food was brought to us and Lilly fell asleep immediately after she ate.

Sighing, I took our trays and put them outside the door before laying down next to her, hoping that I wouldn’t have a nightmare, but I was wrong. As soon as I fell asleep, the memory came back from last night.

I went to Lilly’s room to check on her after my father ordered me to make her go to sleep. I scowled when I heard her crying as I went up the stairs and when I saw my dad, I gasped.

He had a pillow over Lilly's face, shouting at her. “Shut the hell up. I told you to STOP crying!”

He looked at me and raised his eyebrows. “What the hell were you doing to her?!”

“Shut your kid up. She woke me up.”

“You DON’T ever. Lay a hand on her again. You got it?”

“I can do whatever I want.”

He shoved past me as I rushed over to Lilly’s crib, rocking her back and forth to try and comfort her.

I woke up as I felt tears slide down my cheeks. I failed to protect Lilly. My main goal was to be a good mother and protect my daughter no matter what, but I failed.

I put up with dad’s abuse for years, but I will NOT let him do that to Lilly EVER again. If he doesn’t stop, I’ll kill him if I have to. Just to protect my daughter.

I heard my phone vibrate and wondered who was contacting me this late.

Justice: Hey Jamie, happy birthday! I forgot to tell you earlier. Hope you had a good day!! :)

Jamie: Thanks, Justice. I kind of forgot.

Justice: What? How could u forget??

Jamie: I’ve had a long day. This has by far been the worse birthday I’ve ever had.

Justice: Your dad isn’t the cause, is he?

Jamie: Yes... I need some sleep.

I tried falling back to sleep, but the memory of my father stayed in the back of my mind for the rest of the night. He hurt his only granddaughter and didn’t give two shits about it. I’m protecting her from now on. She will never be left alone with him again.
