Chapter 7

School started and things were crazy. Kayla wanted to do dance lessons which were on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-7. Jamie wanted to do soccer which was Tuesdays and Thursday from 5:30-6:00. Emily signed up for cheerleading which was everyday until 5pm.

We were all running around crazy including Lucas who was working about 80 hours a week. About a few weeks into October Emily started to act very strange. She was spending alot of time in her room and she was lashing out. I let this go on for a few days, and I decided to speak to her finally.

She was sitting in her room working on homework listening to music. I sat next to her on her bed and I gave her a small smile.

“What is up Emily?” I asked her.

“Nothing,” she said, erasing a problem she had messed up.

“Emily, you know you can tell me anything,” I said to her.

“I said nothing is wrong,” she lashed out at me.

“Emily,” I said, putting a hand on her arm. She started to cry and leaned into my chest.

“I fucked up, really bad,” she said.

“What happened?” I asked her pulling her into a hug.

“I lost my virginity to this guy at camp. He is a sophomore and a football player on the team. We used a condom but I am two weeks late and I think I am pregnant,” she said. I patted her back and I comforted her.

“The only way to be sure is to get tested,” I said to her.

“You are right,” she said.

“We have to tell your brother,” I said.

“No please, at least not until we get news back,” she begged me. I ran to the store and grabbed four pregnancy tests.

She took it and we waited a few minutes. We waited and it was the longest three minutes of both of our lives. And as I sat there waiting I realized that I was an entire month late too. I felt myself starting to panic and I decided to tell Emily to try and make her feel better.

“I just realized I am late too,” I said and she looked at me shocked.

“You need to take a test too,” she said, handing me a test. I went to argue with her, when I realized that I should. So I took the test as she read hers. I heard her squealing through the door.

“It is negative! I am not pregnant!” She said and I could tell she was celebrating. She wrapped the test away and put it in the garbage.

We both waited for my results to be finished and at only two minutes two pink lines showed up meaning I was pregnant.

“I am pregnant,” I said looking down in shock.

“Oh god,” Emily said, hugging me.

We threw my test in the trash and we went downstairs to get dinner ready before Lucas came home. I wasn’t sure how he was going to react, but work had him so stressed out I wouldn’t be surprised if he exploded.

I didn’t even know how to react. Once Lucas got home he gave me a kiss and went upstairs to change into sweats. He was up there for a few minutes when he came down with the positive pregnancy test in his hand.

“Emily, why did I find this in your trash can?” He asked her. He looked like he was about to explode. Emily looked at me in shock and I tried to diffuse the situation.

“Lucas if we can discuss this in private,” I said trying to grab his arm.

“My 14-year-old sister is pregnant there is nothing to discuss. This will ruin your life Em,” he said and instead of telling the truth, she decided to argue.

“We are already taking care of a one-year-old. What is the difference?” Emily said and Lucas laughed.

“The difference is that Lucy is my responsibility. Your baby will be your responsibility. I can barely take care of all of you. I can’t add another child to this equation. I didn’t sign up for all of this” Lucas said and he was fuming.

“Lucas,” I said softly, trying to put my hand on his arm.

“No, this isn’t happening. Emily, who is the father even?” He yelled at her.

“It is my test, Lucas,” I finally said, and he looked like he was going to pass out. Emily took this moment to leave the kitchen.

“I thought you were on birth control,” he said looking up at me.

“I am, when I got sick in August I must have thrown up the pill so I wasn’t fully protected the next time we had sex,” I said to him.

" I don’t think I am ready for this,” Lucas said, running his hands through his hair.

“So you want me to get an abortion?” I asked him and he looked up at me.

“I just need time to figure out what to do,” he said, and he left the house taking his keys with him. I let myself cry for five minutes and then I pulled myself together. I had to worry about Lucy, Jamie, Kayla, and Emily and I had to get dinner ready.

Dinner was painfully silent as the younger kids asked where Lucas was. I told them he was visiting a friend, and I got them all bathed, changed, and ready for bed. I then cleaned the entire house, did laundry, and washed the dishes.

I was exhausted and I knew it was the emotional aspect of this situation along with being pregnant. It was now midnight and I decided to lay down completely exhausted.

I was woken up at 3 am by stumbling around. I looked up and Lucas was completely drunk. Lucas was usually in control, so it was weird to see him completely plastered.

“Charlotte! I am so sorry I freaked at you. I just am waaaaay over my head,” He said laughing.

“Lucas you are drunk. You just left me with all of the kids and got drunk,” I said sitting up in bed.

“Do you think I wanted this? I was living in the city! I had models I was dating! I was going to parties and living my best life. I am now practically a father of four children and now five. I wasn’t even sure if I wanted kids before all of this! I had to give up everything and I have nothing,” he said looking at the picture of his entire family.

“Then go find one of your models to be with, because right now I don’t want to be around you!” I said to him tears running down my face. I went to the couch and grabbed a blanket and fell asleep again.
