Rely on me
Eleni woke up to the smell of pancakes and bacon in the air. She felt so happy for some reason. She stretched her legs out and opened her eyes. She looked around the room and noticed that she was not in her own bed. She was in Ash’s room. Oh my goodness, what have I done? she thought. I would remember sleeping with him right? She didn’t know what to make of it. Shame took over her happiness. I hope I didn’t make a fool of myself. She didn’t remember how she had gotten to his room, let alone why she was in his bed. After a few minutes, which felt like forever, she decided that she had to face him, so she stood up
and walked slowly to the kitchen.
“Good morning.” Ash turned around when he heard her greeting and smiled.
“Good morning Eleni.”
She sat down and whispered “Why did I wake up in your room?”
She was ashamed, yet she somehow hoped that they had slept in the same bed because it really was her wish deep down to be with him.
“You don’t remember?” She shook her head and waited for him to explain further.
He smirked a bit but said nothing more and sat down next to her. She shook her head and looked down like a child who had done
“Don’t worry, nothing happened. You thought that you were dreaming awake so I put a stop to whatever could have happened and brought you to my room. My bed is much more comfortable and I wanted you to have a good night of sleep.″
Eleni nodded, happy with the explanation, but she could feel that something more had happened, she just didn’t remember what. These sleeping awake episodes had happened more and more often as she got older. She usually didn’t do anything bad, just wandered around the house and eventually went back to sleep, but it seemed like something had happened this time. He was looking at her differently and she could feel the blush creeping up her cheeks. She didn’t want to pry any further, she just wanted to crawl under a rock and never come out.
Ash handed her a plate and she grabbed it quickly, their hands grazing gently. She felt like someone had shocked her, her skin tingled and she instantly felt warm all over. My goodness, imagine if we did more than just touching hands. She started eating and tried to push away the thoughts that invaded her mind. He was eating as though nothing was wrong, yet here she was acting like a love sick teenager. Get a hold of yourself Helen.
Today, I was with my human at the beach. It was a beautiful, warm day and we were playing ball by the side of the water. My human got distracted by something, threw the ball sideways
a bit and it landed in the water. I didn’t know if I should go in, when I looked at her she seemed to be staring into the distance, not paying attention to me. I decided to go for it and leapt over the splashing water to get the ball back. I heard her scream my name but it was too late, the water was already over my head and I was struggling to get out.
Eleni couldn’t believe she had been so distracted. Once she saw Kat running for the ball, she knew it was too late. She ran as fast as she could to get the mutt out of the water. The waves splashed against her, as she pushed her way to where the dog was paddling like cazy. She reached out and caught her by the collar as best she could and swam against the current to the shore. Once she got the dog to safety, the adrenaline wore off and she felt a stinging
pain in her right leg. She looked down and saw a beautiful blue jellyfish swimming away under the crystal clear water. She knew right away what it meant.
Something was wrong with my human and I needed to get help. We had walked down the side of the rocks to get to the ocean and it seemed like she couldn’t walk easily anymore. In had to get help, she had saved me, now I had to save her.
Ash was resting on the couch when he was startled awake by Kat who kept pushing her paws into his chest. She was relentless and after a moment or two, she started barking really loud. He stood up and followed her when she ran to the door. He opened it, went out with her and followed where she was taking him. He jogged beside her and as soon as they reached the rocks where he knew Eleni went to swim, he felt a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. What had happened to her? And was she going to be okay?
Eleni felt someone pick her up from the warm sand and wrap their arms around her. She instantly felt calm and reassured. It must be Ash, she thought. She also heard some barking but it sounded so far away, she wasn’t sure if she was imagining it or not. She had no idea how long she had spent passed out on the beach, had no way of telling the time. All she knew is that once she had felt the sting, only a few steps later, she was dizzy and falling face first in the sand.
When she opened her eyes, she was in her room, her leg wrapped tightly in a warm towel. She saw an older man off the side of the room talking with Ash. She couldn’t make out what they were saying. The man grabbed a satchel, touched Ash lightly on the arm and left the room. Ash turned to her and when he saw that she was awake he gave her the biggest smile. He went right up to her and wrapped his arms around her in a tight hug.
“Careful Ash, I’m not made of muscles like you.”
He laughed and let her go. Kat came running into the room and jumped up on the bed. Ash didn’t have enough time to stop her, but somehow she made it past the towel without touching her master’s legs. She gave Eleni a bunch of slobbery kisses and sat down next to her, while Eleni rubbed her ears.
“You know she came to get me when you were unconscious? She made me follow her.”
Eleni looked down at the mutt and thanked her. Kat went to sleep, happy that her master was going to be okay.
“The doctor said to rest your leg until the swelling goes down. I will change the towel every hour and put a new warm one on.”
Eleni smiled and thanked him too. He smiled, but said nothing. She could tell that he wanted to and he was holding back but she didn’t push him. He would talk to her in his own time and she could wait.
