“Hi, may I speak to Harper Emmy Wilson” a nice lady spoke over the phone
“Yes this is Harper”
“I’m nurse Amelia, calling from Cedar Sinai Hospital, this is regarding your check up results” she paused, Harper stopped breathing, this was the moment of truth
“Okay Amelia, go on,” Harper said, trying to sound as calm as she could.
“I’m sorry hun, I’m not able to give tell you the results over the phone, however Dr Curtis would like for you to come in to see him at your earliest convenience”
“Is it bad?” Harper questioned
“Afraid so hun” nurse Amelia said sympathetically.
“Okay, is it possible for me to see Dr Curtis today?” Harper asked
“He has an available slot in an hour, if you can make it in time” nurse Amelia suggested.
“Okay, please schedule me in. I’ll be on my way now” Harper informed as she put down the phone, her heart was pounding against her chest, she was terrified, she sank to the floor staring at the phone.
“Harper, what’s wrong?” Liam asked concern written all over his face, she didn’t notice him crouched down next to her, she didn’t realise he made his way over, actually she forgot that he was even there.
“I need to go to the hospital” Harper collected her thoughts as she forced herself to get up, Liam grabbed her hand stopping her, “Why?”
“I just need to go to the hospital, I need to know something” she spoke hesitantly, she didn’t want him to know, she didn’t want anyone to know.
“Then I’m coming with you” he stated, Harper shook her head in disagreement. “No, just stay here Liam, I need to go now”
“It wasn’t a question, I’m coming with you whether you want me to or not”
“Fine” sighing she had no choice but to agree, she didn’t want to fight him nor did she want to discuss it further, “just no questions till I’m done, please” she pleaded. She grabbed her bags and keys, then they left, Liam didn’t allow Harper to drive, seeing that she wasn’t exactly in the best state, he drove as she provided the directions.
When they arrived, Harper led Liam to the Cancer department of the hospital, Liam followed looking shocked but maintained his silence as promised.
“Hi, I’m Harper Wilson, nurse Amelia called me earlier about my results and I was told to meet Dr Curtis” Harper introduced as she spoke to the receptionist.
“Yes, you have an appointment, please take a seat, Dr Curtis will see you shortly” the nurse explained, Harper nodded and found herself a seat, Liam took the seat next to her, staring at her, wanting to ask what was going on, but he didn’t, she fiddled with her fingers trying to distract herself. Liam reached over to grab her hand, squeezing it, he gave her a sad smile, she held his hand feeling the sparks but it was masked with the concern she had, she nodded at him, she knew he was trying to comfort her and to calm her nerves, but she couldn’t speak or carry a conversation, she was nervous to the point of vomiting.
“Harper Emmy Wilson” the receptionist called, “Dr Curtis will see you in his office, just head down the hall, the third door to the left”
Harper got up, making her way to the doctors office, as she held Liam’s hand, she wanted to let go, but she couldn’t find it in her to let go, she needed comfort, she needed support, even though she won’t admit to it but she did. Knocking the door, as she entered, she saw Dr Curtis sitting in his seat with his stethoscope placed neatly in front of him.
“Hi Harper, please take a seat” Dr Curtis smiled warmly at her, Liam pulled out a chair for her letting her take a seat as he took the seat next to her, he placed his hand on her hand under the table, showing her support.
“Hi Dr, I need to know my results. Is it back?” she questioned shakily, she squeezed Liam’s hand harder, not knowing what she would hear next.
“Yes, here are your results” he handed an envelope to her, as she untangled her fingers from Liam, she shakingly opened the envelope as the Dr continue to explain, “I’m sorry Harper, I know that previously you’ve gotten radiotherapy for your breast cancer, and you were cleared a few months back, and we’ve monitored you, but from the swab we did last week, it seems that you have uterine cancer”
Harper’s world started to collapse, she wasn’t prepared for this, she wasn’t expecting this, she froze as she stared at Dr Curtis, his lips were moving but she couldn’t hear anything, she could feel Liam’s hands on her back, rubbing it, but all she felt was numb.
“We would like to run more tests, and from there we can discuss treatment options. We have a support group here as well, if you need emotional support, our psychologist would be here for you. However it would be best for us to run the test as soon as possible so that we can identify and we can give you the best option for treatment possible”
“Okay” Harper said in a small voice
Harper was moved to an examination room before removing her clothes for a pelvic exam, biopsy and a few other exams, Liam stayed by her side throughout the entire time, trying to soothe her and give her some amount of comfort. She told him that she wanted to tell Wyatt when everything was confirmed, she told Liam not to mention anything to Wyatt until she does, to which he agreed. After all the tests were done, Harper went back to Dr Curtis’ office.
“Harper, I need to let you know that there’s a possibility that we would need to do a hysterectomy, if that’s the case, you will not be able to get pregnant. Of course there are other options, such as surrogacy or adoption, which I strongly suggest to discuss with your partner, we need to prepare you for all possibilities. In the event that you would want a surrogate to carry your baby, you may harvest your eggs and store it first” Dr Curtis spoke looking between Harper and Liam, she did not have the energy to correct him, she knew he would’ve thought that Liam was her husband, she just let it slip.
“Here are some brochures for you to bring back and consider, please discuss with your partner to ensure that you’ve explored all options. You are young, there’s a high possibility that you would want kids in the future, if you choose to harvest your eggs, we have a few great doctors as Cedars Sinai that would be able to take care of you”
“Thank you” Harper didn’t want to be there any longer, she wanted to leave, she wanted to curl up into a ball and cry, her nightmare was becoming reality.
Harper and Liam returned to the penthouse, Liam kept glancing at Harper, who did not speak the entire ride back, he wanted to ask her so much but he didn’t, he knew she needed the quiet. Harper passed the kitchen, looking at the untouched pasta, she instantly felt bad, Liam didn’t get to finish his food, pushing her guilt away, she walked to the master bedroom and laid down on her side, tears started spilling.
Liam roamed around the house, he knew his way around the house, he placed his bags in his room and took a shower, before going down seeing the food on the counter top, deciding that she needed to have food in her system, he heated up their food and he brought it to her room. He entered without knocking, the door wasn’t even closed, he placed the food on the side table, he looked down at her, she was crying silently.
He bent down to kiss her forehead, stroking her back, soothing her. Then he propped her up, trying to get her to sit down, she wiped her tears as she sat, knowing full well he was trying to get her to eat.
He passed her the plate as she sat on the bed, she took it and dug her fork in the pasta she made earlier, he did the same, but taking a seat on the floor, folding his legs. They ate in silence, once Harper was done, she placed the plate back on the side table and laid back on the bed.
Liam brought the plates to the kitchen washing them up, before going back to her bedroom, wanting to check up on her. They still haven’t spoken a word since the hospital, he didn’t know what to say, while she was still in shock from it all.
Liam stared at her by the door, watching her, her eyes were closed, she looked like she was sleeping, but she wasn’t, she was lost in her own thoughts.
“Please, for tonight, can you stay with me Li” she pleaded with her eyes still closed, she could feel his presence.
“Sì” Liam said as he slowly made his way to the bed, lying down next to her, facing her, he stared at her as her tears fell, he couldn’t take it anymore, he reached out to pull her to his chest, rubbing her back as she cried into his chest.
“So che sei abbastanza forte per superare questo. Lo batterai” (I know you are strong enough to overcome this. You’re going to beat this) Liam whispered.
Harper’s phone kept ringing, but she ignored it, she didn’t want to deal with whoever was on the other end of the line. Liam made no effort to help her answer as well.
Liam’s phone vibrated, he removed it from his pocket to check if it was anything important, glancing at the screen it was Wyatt.
Wyatt : Mate, are you at my place yet? Harper isn’t picking up.
Deciding to ignore the message, Liam brought his hand back to comforting Harper. She looked up at him, eyes filled with tears she spoke,
“I’m not even sure if Wyatt wants kids”
