Chapter 45

She heard Jax up the next morning and somehow got out of bed, feeling terrible and got him some breakfast. Just as he was finishing up Charlotte arrived, took one look at Emma and sent her back to bed, telling her that she had everything under control.

Emma went back and cried until she fell asleep again. She awoke a little after noon and went back down. She still didn’t feel good, but it didn’t surprise her after the last 24 hours. She checked her phone and saw that Luke had sent three texts and tried calling her twice. She erased them all. She went outside to sit with the kids as they ate lunch. Charlotte said she could only stay until 4:00 today and not until Luke got home from work.

“I feel bad Emma. You are not feeling well and I want to help!”

“It’s ok Charlotte, I will be ok. Luke had to go out of town for a few days. If I need something I will call some family. Don’t worry.”

Emma went back up to her room, thankful that no remodel workers were there for the next few days. They were waiting on some materials and flooring. Emma had no idea what she was going to say to anyone and then figured it wasn’t her problem, it was Luke’s. She went to lie on the couch and watch TV, resting and trying to ease the sick feeling in her stomach.

It was safe to say that Luke was a hot mess. He went to his condo late the night before, thankful that the renters moved out in May and they kept it in case they needed to stay a few days with the remodel. He got no sleep the night before, thinking about how badly he had fucked up and what he was going to do. He got to work the next day and went down to the floor where Abby worked to confront her. He was even more pissed off when he found out that she was off for the next few days, out of town.

He was a huge ass all day and stayed in his office away from people that day and for the next few days. He went home, pissed that Emma hadn’t answered any of his messages or voicemails. He drank that night in the hopes of sleeping. But the second day they were apart he was just a hungover, pissed off man with a broken heart that was filled with guilt.

No one in the family knew what had happened yet and Luke wanted to keep it that way. He had no idea how they had managed to keep it a secret, but he was reaching a breaking point. The days passed with no change. He wasn’t hiding it as well as he thought he was when his mother stopped by asking why he was in a huge horrible mood to his sisters at the end of September. Unable to contain his pain anymore as Emma returned the gift he sent her for their anniversary, his wall broke. Joan knew something was wrong and after he spilled his heart to her, the pieces started to make sense.

“I’m not going to say that I am disappointed in you or anything like that, because I know you already feel like shit and are in pain. But you better find a way to make this right! I don’t want my grandchildren suffering from this because they will! I love you, but you better fix this Lukas!”

He was sitting on the couch in his office with his head in his hands, feeling terrible after she left the hour before, wondering what he should do. The door was open and Abby came in.

“Hi Luke… Are you ok?”

His head snapped up at hearing her voice, “What they hell are you doing here? I told you to stay away from me!

“What are you talking about?” She asked, pretending to be confused.

“Don’t fucking play with me Abby!! I told you that there is NOTHING between us and I mean it!

“Oh Luke, you know you miss me! You liked what you see, don’t deny it!” She moved closer to him and ran her fingers up his chest, “You know that I could do things to you that little redhead won’t…”

Luke moved her hand off of his chest, “I love my wife, and I am not sure what part of that you don’t understand!”

“You may love her, but you want me. You want me to-“

“Walk away from my brother right NOW!” Megan growled.

Both of their heads whipped around to see Megan and Ben standing there. Ben was in total shock with his mouth hanging open and Megan was pissed, with her hands on her hips. Ben reached a hand around to her shoulders to hold her back.

Abby smirked and walked out of the office as Megan slammed the door.

“Don’t start with me Megan! Mom just left and I don’t have much fight left in me.”

“So no progress with Emma then?” Ben asked gently.

Luke was shocked, “So you know?”

They both nodded their heads.

Luke just shook his head. Megan sat next to him, “Luke, I know you are trying…Do you want me to talk to her?”

“No, this is my mess Sis. But thanks.”

“Let’s go get lunch, Bro.” Ben said.

They stood up and Ben hugged him.

“Luke, before you go, I just wanted to let you know that Abby is being investigated by HR for several sexual harassment complaints. She apparently makes it a habit of going after married men and doesn’t take no for an answer.”

“I have seen that first hand. Just let me know what happens and I will keep trying with Emma.”

“You better!”

Megan kissed her brother and Ben’s cheeks, then went on.

Ben and Luke went to lunch. Ben knew he needed a pep talk to keep reminding him that Emma was the prize and to keep his eye on it.

“Did you get your letter from Pops?” Ben asked.

“Yeah, Pete gave it to me a few weeks ago. I haven’t read it yet…”

“You should. That man had a way of knowing things. The letter he gave was perfectly timed and everything that I need to hear. You should read it, Luke.”

Luke promised that he would and they left a little while later.

Luke went to the condo several hours later and worked out at the gym in his building hard, trying to figure out a way to fix this. He went up and chugged a glass of water before sitting on the balcony for a little while. He went back in and pulled out some leftover pieces of pizza to eat for dinner. He stood at the counter in the kitchen eating and drinking a beer. He only had on his shorts, too hot from working out to put his shirt back on. He was just going to shower when there was a knock on the door.

He opened it and was stunned to see Emma standing in front of him.

“Can I come in?”

“Sure! Sorry, Em…” and he moved aside to let her in.

She went over to the kitchen table and sat down. He followed suit and looked at her face. She looked so tired and pale, that it worried him.

“Are you ok Em? Are the kids ok?”

“The twins are fine. Trevor is having a bit of a tough time adjusting to the situation with us, but his school work is going well.”

“I know he called me and chewed me a new one about a week ago and hasn’t returned by calls since. What about you? Are you ok?”

Emma started to nod, then shook her head.

“No…I’m not ok…” She whispered.

Luke reached over and touched her hand from across the table she let it stay for a minute then pulled her hand back.

“Em, what can I do to fix this? I love you Emma!”

“I love you too, but I don’t know if that’s enough anymore. You hurt me, Luke. Deeply. I don’t know how to trust you anymore.”

“I know I hurt you and broke your trust. I am willing to do anything I can to make you see that I am in this, for better or for worse!”

She smiled weakly at him, “Be careful what you wish for Luke.”

She sat there for a few minutes, and then sighed.

“I came by for two reasons. One, I just wanted to let you know the remodel is done. The kids want to see you, so please come by to see them anytime. Just please let me know before you come by.”

“Thank you. I want to see them every day. Is that ok?”

“Just let me know when you are coming over so that I can leave.”

“Damn it Emma! Why do you have to leave if I come over? Shouldn’t our kids get to see us together?”

“I’m not going to argue with you! Just please let me know before you do.”

She got up and went to the door, “You can come tomorrow if you want. I am going to Liv’s bridal shower tomorrow, so the kids will be with Sylvia.”

Joey and Liv were getting married in a few weeks and they had already sent in the RSVP, since Luke was a groomsman, before they split up.

Luke smiled, “Have fun. I am going out with the guys on Sunday for the bachelor party. We are going fishing and drinking!”

Emma smiled at him and turned to leave. Luke put his hand on her arm, “You said there were two reasons why you came. What’s the other reason?”

She sighed and came back into the room and closed the door, “I went to the doctor the other day; I wasn’t feeling well at all. I have been tired and having headaches for the last few weeks and thought it was the stress of all this. So I had Dr. Smithson run some tests.”

“Oh my god, Babe! Are you ok? What’s wrong?”

“I found out on our Anniversary… I’m pregnant Luke.”

“Pregnant? But how?”

“Well, sometime during our trip to Hawaii, I must have missed a pill because I am 10 weeks pregnant…”

“I don’t know what to say…”

“I know you don’t want any more kids, so you need to decide if you want to come back or not. I won’t fault you if you don’t. But I can’t have you come back and treat this child differently than the twins. So if you think you can’t treat them all with love, then just don’t come back. I am having some complications with this pregnancy, Luke. I have preeclampsia, or high blood pressure that is caused by the baby. They don’t know how long I can keep the baby before it gets too dangerous and they have to deliver him or her early. I am resting as much as I can and de-stressing as much as I can. But I had to let you know, just in case.”

He looked at her in disbelief, “You are risking your life for this baby?”

“No, I am making sure that this child has the same chance that our first three had.”

He could tell that there was no point in arguing about it. He took his hand off her shoulder and dropped it so she could leave. Emma went back to the door and turned to leave.

“Happy Anniversary... It’s a different kind of present.”

He watched as she closed the door and slumped to the couch. He was speechless and confused. He pulled on his shirt, grabbed his wallet and went out to Ben’s bar. Ben wasn’t there, so he sat at a small table and started on some shots. He was about half a bottle of tequila in when the men from his old SWAT team arrived after a mission and found him. Joey was stunned as Luke told him the newest news about her being pregnant.

Joey drove him home when he thought he had had enough. He sat him on the couch and covered him with a blanket.

“You know what you need to do Luke. Love your wife and ALL your children. Be there for them and take care of them. Nothing like a wedding to bring people together…” Joey said as he left.

Luke heard him and kept thinking about that as he drifted off into sleep.
