Chapter 28

As soon as the elevator doors closed, I slumped my shoulders forward and felt so relaxed. It felt like the world was lifted off my shoulders and I could finally breathe again. It wasn’t really how I wanted that argument to go--because I knew he’d try to break me--but it was better than getting back together with him.

I walked into the waiting room, knowing that Melissa and Serena had heard every word of our conversation. Hell, the whole hospital probably did. I just hopped Mom’s door was closed and that she didn’t hear a word of it because that would hurt so much more than anything Mason could say to me.

“Are you okay?” Serena asked, brows furrowed together. I slumped down in a chair next to her and rested my head on her shoulder. I didn’t have any more tears for that man, and I was glad. Serena brushed her fingers against my forearm. “He wasn’t good for you anyway.”

“Yeah,” Melissa said, trying to lighten the mood. “Tell us about this man you went home with last night.”

My eyes widened, and I hoped that Michael didn’t walk in anytime soon because… I didn’t know how I’d get any words out with him smirking at me from across the room. All I would think about was last night and the way he touched me so savagely as I talked to Mason.

“Uhm…” I said, rubbing my palms on my jeans. “I don’t even remember his name.”

Melissa rolled her eyes. “Ugh, don’t give us that. He had to be damn good if he got you to break up with Mason. So, who was he?” she asked. Then her lips curled into a smile. “Was it Victor? Oh, my gosh, it was Victor!”

Serena furrowed her brows. “Why would she fuck your boyfriend?”

I rolled my eyes and gave Serena my best You-will-never-believe-what-happened-at-the-party look. But Melissa clapped her hands together, completely ignoring it. “I knew he’d be good for you.”

“It wasn’t Victor,” I said.

Melissa rolled her blue eyes and made a face. “Then who was it?” She turned to Serena and narrowed her eyes. “Do you know? You’re awfully quiet.”

Serena’s eyes widened, and she shook her head. “No.”

Melissa gazed at her phone flashing with text messages from Victor and rolled her eyes, yawning. “Victor wants me to come over.” She walked to the elevators and waved at me from within them. “Try to get it out of her, Serena,” she said, winking at me. And when the elevator doors closed, I blew out a deep breath through my nose. God, this was going to be so much harder than I thought it would.

How do I even bring it up in conversation? Do I just come out with it and say “Oh, hey, Melissa, I’m doing your dad?”

“So,” I said, sipping on my coffee. “How is your boyfriend’s sister’s baby? Boy or girl?”

Serena slapped me on the arm. “First, she had a girl named Anna. And, second, come on! Spill the damn tea! I’ve been in absolute joy since I heard you broke up with Mason! What happened with Michael?”

I looked around the room to make sure there were no prying ears and said, “Lower your voice. I don’t want anyone finding out just yet.” And, then, I dove into everything that had happened within the past forty-eight hours, from when she left me at the party to Melissa trying to get me to hook-up with Victor to Michael answering my phone call with Mason.

When I finished, she stared at me with wide eyes and her mouth wide open. “Oh, my god.” She fanned herself and burst out laughing. “Oh, my god! Mia! You got yourself a real man!” She jumped out of her seat and started pacing the waiting room with a huge grin on her face. “I don’t even have damn words for it. You are living an actual fantasy!”

I raised my brows and glanced down the hall toward Mom’s hospital room. “I don’t know about that.”

Serena sat back down next to me and grabbed my hands. “You know what I mean. Our best friend’s dad… you’re like dating him now?”

Dating? I didn’t know what we were exactly. “I guess you could say that.”

Suddenly the excited expression dropped from her face. “How are you going to tell Melissa? I don’t know how she’s going to take it knowing that her best friend and her dad are getting it on in every corner of his house.”

I sunk down in my seat and groaned. “I don’t know how to tell her. Do you think she’s going to be angry at me?” I asked.

“To be honest, I would be angry if it were my dad. But… Melissa has been in a better mood than usual lately. If you tell her soon, maybe she won’t be as mad?” Serena shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know. That’s a hard decision.”

Well, I knew it would be, but hearing it from Serena made it seem a hundred times worse than it was. “I… If she decides to end our friendship after all these years, will you stay by my side?” I asked. It felt weird asking Serena but… I didn’t want to be alone in this. I needed someone to talk to now that Mason was out of the picture.

Serena rolled her eyes. “Oh, don’t even ask me that! You know I will.” She paused. “But… there’s something I have to tell you.” Her smile turned into a frown. “I don’t want to stress you out even more, but…”

My heart dropped just thinking about what she could say that would hurt me. It seemed these past two weeks had already been absolute hell. I didn’t know if I could take more.

“Mason is telling everyone that you’re a whore,” she said. “Everyone at the frat last night knows that you were being fucked by someone when you broke up with him.” She wrapped her arms around me and brought me into a hug. “And you know that everyone is going to believe him.”

While part of me hurt, I was starting not to give a single fuck about him anymore. I didn’t care what a bunch of no-good sleazing frat boys thought of me. They were immature assholes who cheated on their girlfriends all the damn time. I didn’t need the extra drama in my life right now or at all.

Serena’s gaze shifted from me to the elevator doors, and she pulled away slightly. They opened and Michael walked out of them, one hand stuffed into his pocket, the other holding his coffee. He had a smug smirk on his face, and I wondered what took him so damn long to come up here. Maybe he was talking to Melissa after I ratted on her last night… or maybe he was walking to Mason.

Serena bumped her shoulder into mine and winked, walking toward the elevators to leave. “Have fun with Daddy Bryne.”
