I stared out the car window, watching the landscape pass by. Trees, trees, more trees. I sighed and pulled out my phone. Of course, no new messages. I went to pictures and scrolled through my favorites. I scrolled through the pictures from our house on the beach of Florida. The blue water, it was home. Unlike dreary Oklahoma. I sighed and turned off my phone. I bent down and rummaged through my bag. No, I didn't take off my seatbelt, if you were wondering.
I sighed and finally decided to just pick up my bag to look. I searched through my bag until I found my headphones. I pulled them out and put the bag back into the floorboard. Just as I was about to put my headphones on and turn on music, my dad started up a conversation.
"So what?" I asked.
"Look, it's not as bad as it seems." My dad said. Looked at me.
"Eyes on the road." I said. "You're right. It's probably worse than it seems."
He sighed and stared at the road. Looks like that conversation was over. I put on my headphones and turned on some music. The song 'My way' by Ava Max came on. I started to hum along with the song. When the song finished I got a message.
Bff- Hey, just got out of practice. I can't believe you are leaving for a year! I'm going to miss you so much!
I smiled and texted her back.
Me- How was practice? I know! I'm going to miss you, too! Maybe you can come by and see me some time! I can't believe I have to go to Oklahoma though, it's such a boring place. I don't have any friends there either, this year will be the worst.
I turned off my phone after sending the message. I hummed the song without knowing what it was. My phone buzzed and I looked at it.
Bff- It was boring without you. I hope I can come over at least once, I won't make it through the year without you!
I laughed and texted her back.
Me- I'm sorry you were bored. I don't think I'll make it a week without you, especially in Oklahoma.
I sent it and turned off my phone. My phone buzzed, I looked at it. It was from my boyfriend.
Bf- Hey, bae! I can't believe you are leaving for a year. I'll miss you!
Me- I'll miss you more!
Bf- Doubtful, I bet I'll miss you more. I gtg, by brother wants me to play catch with him.
Me- Awww, okay. Bye!
I turned off my phone. I checked my phone and saw I had a message.
Bff- Julie... I have something to tell you...
Me- What is it, Paige?
Bff- Um... well... your boyfriend, Zach, is cheating on you...
Bff- I saw him making out with some other girl...
Me- HOW DARE HE!? I gtg. Ttyl.
I turned off my phone and slammed it onto the seat. I threw off my headphones and started crying. My dad looked over at me wide-eyed.
"Honey, what's wrong!?" He asked me surprised, looking between me and the road.
"Zach cheated on me!" I yelled, tears streaming down my face. "He cheated!" My vision blurred from the tears.
"What!?" My dad angrily screamed and gripped the steering wheel. I just cried.
My dad angrily called Zach's mom. It was through the car, so I was able to hear the conversation, even if I didn't want to.
"Your son cheated on my daughter! Do you have anything to say in his defense before I show him what happens when someone hurts my daughter!?" My dad screamed when Zach's mom answered.
"What, he cheated?!" She asked surprised.
"Zach! I'm going to kill you!" We heard his mom scream.
"What did I do!?" I heard Zach's voice over the phone.
"How dare you cheat on such a sweet girl!" His mom screamed angrily.
I winced and cried more. My dad hung up and reached over to rub my shoulder.
"It's okay, honey. It'll be okay." My dad said soothingly and rubbed my shoulder with one hand while driving with the other.
I just cried. I cried until my eyes ran dry. I put my phone on silent and sadly stared out the window.
About an hour later I checked my phone. Six missed calls from Paige, twenty messages from Paige. Two missed calls from Zach, three messages from Zach.
Bff (Paige)- Um... okay, bye...
Twenty minutes after the first message.
Bff (Paige)- Are you okay?!
I sighed and read the twenty messages.
Me- Sorry to worry you, Paige. I just can't believe he would cheat...
She answered right away.
Bff (Paige)- Thank God you're okay! I can't believe he would to that to you!
She said, sending an angry emoji.
I smiled sadly.
Me- Just don't kill him.
Bff (Paige)- What!? I would never!
Bff (Paige)- Alright, I would. But he hurt you, I kill anyone who hurts you. That's part of being my best friend!
I laughed once and replied.
Me- Yeah, I know! Lol! Just, seriously, don't kill him.
Bff (Paige)- Fine... looks like I'm putting my gun back.
Me- You do that. Imma go now, don't kill anyone.
Bff (Paige)- Alright, fine. Ttyl! Bye! Luv ya!
Me- Love you too!
I turned off my phone and grabbed my headphones. I turned my music back on. 'Little do you know' By Alex and Sierra came on. I sadly listened to it.
After a while of listening to music I fell asleep.
I woke to my dad shaking my shoulder.
"Hey, honey, we're resting here for tonight, come on." He said. He had our over-night bag in his right hand.
I rubbed my tired eyes and climbed out of the car. When we got into the hotel room, I plopped facedown on one of the beds. A new wave of tears came. I fell asleep on a tear-soaked pillow.
