Everly’s POV

"Hi Everly, I just seated some people at table 7. Mike had to leave early so Brad said for you to cover for his tables," Jess shouted catching my attention as I walked by with an order for one of my tables.

"Ugh.. seriously. That's four more tables on top of what I'm already working today," I whined in response.

I just started my shift for today about an hour ago. Meaning Mike left after only working an hour. He is always doing this. I really hope he has a good excuse this time.

But he never does and Brad just let's it slide. He is like that with all the male employees though. He is a sexist pig. All of the females here are constantly getting in trouble for the smallest things.

"Hey look on the bright side, they look like big tippers," Jess chirped out with a small smile breaking me from my thoughts.

Knowing I needed the extra tips would make this much easier. I shake away my annoyance and give her a small smile.

"Okay, tell Brad I've got them but I've got to get this food to my customers," I mumbled as I turned on my heels to head to table 10.

After delivering table 10's food and making sure they were satisfied, I headed to table 7.

Approaching the table my hands started to sweat when I spotted the three men that were seated there.

Groaning inwardly in irritation, I straighten my back and plaster on a fake smile while making my way to them.

This can't be happening, I don't know why this is happening to me. My day has just gone to complete shit. This is just my luck. I knew I would run into him sooner or later.

I was hoping it would be later, much much later..... well more like never.

My smile falters as my mind starts screaming, abort mission, abort the damn mission, Everly!! If I didn't really need this job I would just walk out right now. But I continue taking steps towards them.

So I again plaster on a fake smile as I stand before the three men at table 7 and say, "Good evening, my name is Everly, and I'll be your waitress this evening. What can I get you to drink?".

"Hello, Ever, how have you been?" his deep voice replied softly as his eyes gazed at my face. The voice that I used to love. The voice that used to bring me comfort. Now just makes me sick.

I look directly into his light blue eyes, while swallowing down the bile rising in my throat to hopefully show him that he doesn't affect me. Not anymore. He isn't worth my time.

"I'm great actually, now what can I get you, gentlemen, to drink?" I ask him and his two friends as I try to hold back the annoyance in my voice.

"That's good to hear. You look delicious, babe." he mumbled with a smirk as his eyes roamed over my body.

Mentally rolling my eyes and cursing him out, I swallow my irritation as I know he is just trying to get under my skin.

"Thank you, Matthew, now what can I get you guys to drink?" I ask while gritting my teeth. Wanting nothing more than to slap this douchebag. I'm losing tolerance for this asshole.

Gah, it's going to be a long-ass night.

"Scotch, on the rocks for all of us." Matthew declared as his friends nodded in agreement.

"Great, I will get your drinks from the bar and be back for your order." I announce with a fake smile as I turn on my heels to head to the bar.

Freaking asshole. Ugh, I can't stand him. I don't know how I'm going to get through this shift. Think about your mom, Everly.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Once work ended I headed home. I was ready for a nice hot bath after having to deal with my ex and his douche bag friends.

My relationship with Matthew started in high school. He was the sweet and loving boyfriend, that suddenly turned into a lying and cheating ass boyfriend because I refused to have sex with him.

I tried to forgive him after the first time, but when I caught him in bed with my best friend I broke it off.

That relationship and friendship both went down the drain.

He kept calling me trying to apologize saying it was a mistake and that he loved me. But I wasn't buying that shit, so I just blocked his number. And blocked him on social media.

I did the same thing with Casey, my now ex-best friend.

After getting into a fight with her over it, she confessed that they had been fucking each other for months behind my back.

I'm so damn glad I didn't give him my virginity because he didn't deserve it.

You'd think after two years he'd get the damn memo that I don't want anything to do with him.

We had started dating when I was seventeen and broke up when I was nineteen.

I caught them in bed together on my nineteen birthday. So let's just say I feel like my birthday is cursed.

For one my dad left right before my eighteenth birthday, then I lose my best friend and boyfriend on my nineteen birthday.

But whatever. I don't need any of them.

I mean he could have just broken up with me instead of cheating on me. I mean if sex was that important to you, why not just break up so you don't have to sneak around?

Why cheat and hurt someone just because you can't keep it in your pants?

As I pull up in my driveway, I see the home health nurse coming out of the front door.

"Hey, Shelia, how is she?" I ask her as I give her a big hug.

"Hey girl. To be honest, Everly, she is a lot worse than she was last week." she informs me with a sad smile.

I know my mom isn't going to beat this cancer but knowing I'm running out of time with her is hard to hear.

I also don't get to spend much time with her because of me having to work so much.

"She has a doctors appointment in the morning, will you be taking her or do you need me to come and take her?" She asks me while putting her nurse's bag in the back of her car.

Sometimes when I have to work double shifts, Shelia takes my mom to her doctor's appointments or treatments. It really does help me out and reduces some of my stress.

"I only work tomorrow evening, so I will be able to take her, " I explain to her while setting an alarm on my phone so to remind me.

"Okay girl, well, I have to be getting home. Call me if you need anything, okay?" she says while getting in her car.

"Thank you, Shelia, I'll do that. I don't know what we would do without you, " I confess to her while waving goodbye.

I watch her drive off then make my way inside. The house is quite so I'm not sure if my brother is home yet.

"Elias, are you home?" I ask while walking into the kitchen.

I don't get an answer. But I see some dirty dishes sitting in the sink. So I decide to go check upstairs.

Peeking in his door I don't see him in his room, so I decided to peek in and check on mom.

When I open her door, I immediately see Elias laying beside her on the bed asleep. She gives me a warm smile as she softly plays with his hair.

Her sickness has been really hard on him. He doesn't really talk about it but you can see the sadness in his eyes.

He really needs this time with her so I blow her a kiss then softly close the door.

I walk to my room to take a shower before going downstairs to start dinner.

After showering I go to the kitchen to make dinner. After everything is finished, Elias comes down to eat as I fix mom a plate of food.

After everyone has finished and Elias helped me wash the dishes. I make a list of things I need to do tomorrow. Along with a list of things we need from the store.

Once I'm ready to hit the bed I take mom some medicine with a snack. Then head to my room to get some sleep.

As I drift off to sleep I silently hope that the doctor gives us some good news tomorrow.
