Even though he had no place, he still promised to go out with Maria and he wasn't going to let her down. He didn't like her that much, he just knew she was too kind to just blow off.
He got ready in whatever he had, which wasn't much, and picked up his phone to call Quincy. Then, he remembered, Quincy is gone forever. He sighed and put his phone back in his pocket and walked the whole way to John McCain's house.
He stood in front of the driveway, noticing colorful lights flashing and loud music blaring inside the house while kids outside had red solo cups and made out in their cars. He hated drunk people.
"Deion!" Maria shouted, running towards him.
"Hey, Maria!" He said with a smile.
"I'm so glad you made it. Let's go inside!" She said, grabbing his hand and leading him inside the house. The scent of alcohol and perfume hit his nose and loud music blasted his ears. A sensory overload could've happened to him right then and there.
He then caught the eye of someone very familiar: Aarav. His stomach fluttered and he flashed him a smile. Aarav flashed him a small one back before turning away and talking to the girl beside him.
Deion felt a hint of sadness but tried to ignore it. "Come on, let's go talk a bit," Maria said, pulling him toward the stairs.
They found an empty room and Maria sat him down. "I wanted to say that... I always thought you were cute." She said with a blush.
"Well, thank you." He said with an awkward smile.
Her expression faded but then she looked at him and began to lean in. "I wanna kiss you..." She said, leaning in closer and placing her lips on his. He felt slightly disgusted but knew he had to hide the disgust.
The door opens and they break away. "Oh, uh sorry..." Deion looked to see Aarav standing there looking at the ground. "Sorry... Bye." He mumbled and shut the door. Deion sat staring at the door.
"It's ok, we can go back to what we were doing," Maria said.
"No, uh..." What? Why did he say that? "I have to go."
Maria scoffs. "You've got to be kidding me,"
"It's Aarav isn't it?" She says with an eyebrow raised.
"What is?" He gulped nervously.
"Deion... I've been watching how you and Aarav act together... There is something going on between you. I just know it." She proclaimed.
"What?! No! I-"
"Oh cut the shit. I understand, ok? If you want to leave, go. I fully support it." Maria said, giving him a small smile.
Deion sits in shock, "Thank you..."
"No problem. Now go!" She shouts. He smiles and runs out the door, down the stairs, and out of the house.
He smiles big. He felt so great to finally get away from those drunk, annoying, horny teenagers. He's never loved the fresh air so much.
The next day, Deion walked with his backpack toward Aarav's house. He had nowhere else to go, and that was the first place he thought to go.
He knocked on the door, waiting for a couple of seconds before the door opened.
"Deion! What a pleasant surprise!" Aarav's mother said happily.
"Hey, Mrs. Reddy. I was wondering if I could stay here for a little while. I don't mean to bother you I just don't have a place to stay and-"
"No worries! Stay as long as you want. Come in, now!" She said, gesturing for him to enter. Upon entering he sees a child sitting on the couch watching a cartoon.
"Who's this?" The boy asked.
"Nikhil, this is Deion. Deion, this is Nikhil. He is our youngest." The mother said with a smile.
"Hey, Nikhil," Deion said. The child gave him a hello back and went back to watching his cartoons.
"Aarav! Deion is here!" Aarav's mother shouts from inside the kitchen. A few seconds later, Aarav comes into the living room.
"Hey..." He says quietly.
"Hey. Uh, I need to talk to you." Deion says.
"Yeah. Come into my room." Aarav says, walking ahead of him and Deion following closely behind him. Aarav closes the door and asks what Deion needs to talk about. Deion felt like something was off about Aarav today.
"Well, I had a big fight with my father so I was wondering if I could crash here for a while. Also... Uh, sorry about you walking in on me and Maria." Deion says.
"Oh... No worries." Aarav mumbles.
"So, can I stay here?" Deion asks again.
"Oh... Yeah, uh I gotta ask my mom."
"She already said it was ok I just wanted to know if you were ok with it," Deion explains.
"Oh," Aarav mumbles.
"Are you ok?" Deion asks.
"Can't you go to Maria's?" Aarav snaps.
"Woah, what's up with you?"
"You seemed to have fun making out with Maria so why don't you go crash at her place?!" Aarav shouts.
"Woah, we never made out. She kissed me and I didn't want her to. I just went on a date with her because I promised her I would and I didn't want to be a dick. Maybe I should've said no in the first place, but I didn't want to make her feel sad so I said sure. Now, what the hell is your deal?!" Deion shouts back.
Aarav looks down at his shoes, "You still kissed her." He said angrily. "Don't act like you didn't want it at all."
"Rav!" Deion shouted.
"Don't call me that again." Aarav snaps.
"Fine, Reddy, listen-"
"Don't call me anything. In fact, don't talk to me again." Aarav demands.
Deion stands in silence for a couple of seconds, "What did I do? Can you at least tell me that?"
Aarav hugs himself, "No..."
"Then I can't fix it," Deion says.
"Then go to Maria's!" Aarav shouts.
"Do you like Maria or something?" Deion asks. "If so, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to take away Maria from you."
"I don't fucking like Maria." Aarav mumbles.
"Then what is your problem?" Deion asks. All Aarav does is stare at the floor. "Back to square one, huh? I thought we were becoming friends... I had a nice time the other day behind that trail. I needed some fun. I'm sorry for whatever I did. I'll go now." Deion mumbles the last part before opening the door.
"Deion..." Aarav says.
"I'll tell you why I'm doing this... But you gotta close the door." Aarav explains.
"Alright," Deion closes the door. "Now, talk to me."
"Come sit, please." Aarav mumbles and Deion does just that, sitting right beside Aarav. "I hope this doesn't freak you out but... I just didn't like seeing you with Maria. I know I should tell you why but I don't want to..."
"What do you mean? Is something wrong with Maria or something?"
"No, that's not it... Look, remember what Breeanna said that day we skipped school and went to that trail?" Aarav asks.
"She said you couldn't get-" Deion gets cut off.
"No, not that. The other thing..."
"About... Me?" Deion asks and Aarav nods in reply. "What about it?"
Aarav begins to cry, "She was right."
"Huh?" Deion's eyes widen. This can't be real, he thinks.
"She was right. It was all because I'm not normal." He cries.
"What do you mean you're not normal?"
"Don't you fucking get it yet? I'm gay. There I said it. Happy?!" Aarav shouted, looking straight at Deion.
Why is he so happy? It's not like he's gay too. Then again, he would really like to feel Aarav's lips against his own. Deion debated whether or not he should act on what he was thinking. Finally, he decided he should.
He grabbed Aarav's hand, noticing at first how warm and soft his skin felt. "What are you doing?" Aarav asked.
Then, he leaned in closer and closer, he put his other hand against Aarav's cheek. He sits looking at Aarav before finally smashing his lips onto Aarav's.
Aarav's body relaxes and he said down on the bed as Deion continues to kiss him.
He's never felt like this before. He wanted more, so much more. He's never wanted more. What was that strange feeling? Nervousness? Adrenaline? Regardless, he fucking loved it.
Aarav moves his hand to Deion's face and caresses his cheek. Suddenly, he realized something, he fucking loved this. He never wanted girls, he only wanted boys. Aarav took it upon himself to deepen the kiss and Deion went with it.
After a couple of seconds, they pulled apart, pressing their foreheads together and breathing heavily. "Damn," Deion says with a chuckle.
"I agree." Aarav replies before kissing Deion again. His hands found Deion's hair and begins to move his fingers through his tight curls. Wow, Deion thinks.
Deion pulls away and they press their foreheads together after one last small kiss. They both sit there with smiles on their faces. Aarav moves his head toward Deion shoulder and lays it there.
"You wanna stay in here tonight?" Aarav whispers.
"Yeah, sure." Deion replies with a smirk.
Aarav giggles, "Don't be weird."
"Never." Deion winks and Aarav rolls his eyes.
