Chapter 11: I'm a cat-bear hybrid who teaches sex education.

What’s the point of being alive if you don’t at least try to do something remarkable? . - John green

Saturday evening I told my mom that I wanted a job. She was way too happy to oblige and said she will find some really good jobs for me. I should have sensed something was suspicious...but I was way too dense.

“Mom, I need to do a job not find another hobby.” I gritted out as I clutched the notepad that included my job opportunities.

" I know that crystal.” she chirped while flipping pancakes.

“Are you sure?” I asked her in a calm voice.

“Yes of course,” she said pouring another pancake.

" No, you are not! These jobs will barely pay me. In fact, they won’t pay me at all!”

“Crystal, we discussed this. They are the only safe options you have. Besides, why do you need a job anyway?” she said.

" because....i...uh” I struggled to string my words in such a manner that they did not sound ungrateful but I had enough of using Brad for his money.

“Then it is final. Today is Sunday. Find a job you can do on weekends and be happy. But remember do not go for any other jobs. It is not recommended. ”

I was barely keeping my annoyance at the check when Brad entered the kitchen. He greeted us.

“what is happening?” he asked while unlocking his mac book.

" mom is not allowing me to get a job.”

" crystal is being unreasonable. ”

Brad just looked at each of us and then turned to me, ” why do you need a job?”

" exactly” my mom exclaimed while placing a pile of pancakes on the table.

" because I want to feel independent. ” I said in a firm voice.

" maybe you can come to my firm, we can get you a clerical job perhaps if you are okay with that,” he said.

I huffed in annoyance.

“That sounds perfect.” my mom said.

“No, it does not. No offense to you Brad,” I told him while attacking my pancakes with vigor.

" I just want to do something by myself,” I told mom with a mouthful of pancakes.

" don’t talk with food in your mouth”, mom said condescendingly. I puffed my cheeks out.

" Mom. please...” I whined.

“No.”

I looked at Brad who was busy flipping through the news. Picking up a blueberry I threw it at his head.

“Ow,” he said then looked at the blueberry in bewilderment.

“Psst.” I hissed at him. And he looked at me completely confounded.

‘Do something please’ I mouthed. He nodded and turned towards my mom.

YES! Now he will use his lawyer magic on mom and convince her. I was already doing a victory dance.

“Darling, I think we should let crystal do whatever job she wants....”

“No.” my mom turned to him with a deadly glare that I had mastered from her.

And I saw Brad get scared as he silently shoved a mouthful of pancake in his mouth while vigorously nodding his head.

" as you say,” he said.

Huh, men will be men. I sighed in defeat, nothing could change my mom’s mind once it was set.

" If you want any of those jobs then you better get started. And remember, those are the only jobs I will let you do,” she said.

I puffed my cheeks out like a chipmunk and stomped out of the dining room grabbing my hoodie from the couch and setting off.

Grumbling I reached my first place of employment- little rainbow daycare center.

They had a vacancy for any person who could ‘Read and act’ for kids. I wiped the frown off of my face and entered the place.

It was posh. Like it was meant only for rich kids. I sighed and made my way towards the elderly receptionist who was still living in the 60s.

“How may I help you?” she asked smiling brightly. I smiled back at her brightly, “I am here for the job-”

“Oh yes!!! Crystal Gartlet! you look just like Jade! Let’s see. Here read this.” she said handing me a children’s storybook.

I didn't correct her for saying my last name wrong. I was mostly peeved that this might be a real-life example of nepotism.

“Oh look! My hat is missing !!!” I read loudly.

“Perfect!” she exclaimed clapping her hands together.“You are hired.”

I widened my eyes, “just like that?”

“Yes, dear.”

“But you don’t even properly know me....”

“You can read with drama. You are pretty. And you can smile. You are perfect.” she said happily beaming at me while I struggled with bewilderment.

“uh...ok.”

“There are some rules though.”

Oh good, here they come.

“You can’t scream, curse, or hit the children. And you cannot wear inappropriate clothes while here. Now come, let’s get you ready, the kids will be here in 10 minutes.” she said dragging me towards the section containing bookshelves and animal-shaped seats.

She went behind a bookshelf and came back with some black things.

“wear this,” she said, handing me cat ears, two cat paw-shaped gloves, and a fluffy cat tail, all in black.

“no thanks,” I told her thrusting the ridiculous things back at her.

She shook her head at me, “you have to wear this. Quick.”

I opened my mouth to possibly protest against her but she said, “It’s all right. They are all kids. No reason for you to feel embarrassed.”

I mulled over the thought; ah hell! Who cares?

I took the props and dressed crazily. The kids started streaming in and settling on the cushions laid out for them.

Their parents and nannies sat at chairs laid at the back of the room a little away from the kids. I waltzed my way inside and wriggled my tail a little eliciting giggle and laughter from the kids and the elders.

Then I beamed at everyone and enthusiastically spoke, “meow everyone!!!”

The kids meowed back. They meowed for a long time. So I joined them in meowing until one of the nannies shushed us and ordered me to start the story.

Grinning, I sat down and opened the storybook I was supposed to read. All the children were hopping and grinning.

“The three little kittens.” I said reading the title aloud when the door to the place opened and a little girl came running towards me, “crystal!”

“Leah!” I beamed at the girl hugging me tightly.

She pouted, “you forgot me. You never came to meet me.”

“I am so sorry Leah. I had work to do.”

“You don’t like me,” Tears gleamed in her baby blue eyes.

“No Leah. I love you. You are my most favorite person in the whole world!”

She grinned at me. Someone started laughing.

Max stood behind the crowd of kids gathered with a fist covering his mouth. “Crystal. You look...like a grizzly bear,” he said before hiding his flushed face.

“Yes, dear.”

“But you don’t even properly know me....”

“You can read with drama. You are pretty. And you can smile. You are perfect.” she said happily beaming at me while I struggled with bewilderment.

“I am so sorry Leah. I had work to do.”

He scooted over a little and blushed crimson when Leah smiled. I observed this spectacle with brows raised. My eyes wandered to max who was shamelessly flirting/apologizing to a rich woman. Huh, like brother like sister.

Smiling to myself, I started reading the story about kittens and mittens and how they were not supposed to eat pie without mitten. It seemed like a thinly disguised version of sex ed, but I kept my views to myself.

“Okay everyone, would you like to look like cats today?” I asked the kids. They all screamed yes.

" well then grab your cat gear and paint your faces!”

The kids quickly stood up and rushed to get their cat ears. I finally got rid of the cat gloves and stood up.

My employer smiled at me, “excellent work. The kids like you. I guess you will be coming here for weekends?”

“Yes,” I told her.

She noted my details. Someone pulled at my hand.

I looked down at Leah, “Which one should I choose? White or black?” she inquired while holding two sets of cat ears in different colors.

I kneeled in front of her and placed the white cat ears on her head, “the white one because you are an angel.” She giggled.

“where is your brother?”

“he is painting faces,” she told me.

And sure enough, he was surrounded by a horde of excited kids and....uh...drooling woman...?even amid so many people max hardly looked like the max in school.

He had a cute frown line on his forehead as he tried to paint a girl’s nose. Every time the girl giggled, max gave her a millimeter smile. He was different here, less difficult.

I was pulled out of my thoughts as Leah placed black cat ears on my head, “lets match!” she grinned at me before rushing towards Max.

“me too!” she told him.

He smiled at her before gently grabbing her chin and painting her nose pink. Leah giggled and squirmed and max just smiled at her. Wait a minute! Woah! Max SMILED ?! my eyes widened at the sudden realization.

He even laughed at me! Max never even stretched his facial muscles in school! I gaped at him as he smirked at Leah describing an orange street cat.

He looked good when he smiled...very cute. Wait for a sec...cute?! I shook my head to try and get rid of my wandering thoughts.

“Look crystal, now I am a cat!” Leah said beaming up at me.

I grinned at her. She had a pink nose and black whiskers.

“Aww, you are the world’s most cutest kitten ever!” I hugged her and she wrapped her small arms around me perfectly happy with my answer.

“Let’s get ice cream. Maxy promised he will give us a treat.” She said grabbing my arm and dragging me out. My ‘employer’ waved me goodbye.

“I never said anything like that.” Max frowned.

“Maxy.....” I said while trying my best to suppress my smile. He narrowed eyes at me.

“You did,” Leah replied holding Max with her other hand so that she was walking between us.

“No,” Max said slightly narrowing his eyes at her. Leah looked at me for help. I smiled at her and looked at an apprehensive Max.

“Max, you love Leah? You promised to give her an ice cream treat.”

" Yes, but-”

" He said yes!” I beamed down at Leah as she squealed.

“I did not-”

“Are you taking your promise back?“I asked him with an eyebrow raised.

" That is a bad thing.” Leah chimed.

Max was truly speechless so he did what he was best at doing. He ignored us. Meanwhile, Leah and I prattled about each and everything.

“...I believe that all of us are already born once. We are just getting reborn now.” I told Leah.

“I don’t understand...” she mumbled with a slight pout.

" I mean that before you were Leah you were someone else. Then you died and were born as Leah.” Leah nodded thoughtfully and a smile soon lit up her small face.

" Yes! Max said I was the next Osama bin Laden.” She said grinning proudly.

I jerked my head towards Max who was looking guilty.

“Isn’t that good?” Leah asked with a huge smile.

“No Leah.”

“No?”

“Osama bin Laden was a very bad man”

“A bad man?”

“Yes, a very evil bad man. Everyone hates him,”

Leah turned to glare at Max who had dropped all pretense of being ignorant and was inconspicuously walking away from us.

“Where do you think you are going, young man?” Leah spoke in a haughty tone with her fists on her hips.

Max turned slowly. Leah narrowed her eyes so much that they were almost closed. And I was grinning like a maniac.

“Come here.”

“Leah....”

“Come here right this second!” Leah screeched.

I burst out laughing. Max turned to glare at me but Leah ordered him, “bend down.”

Max huffed impatiently and kneeled to her level. Leah caught hold of his shoulder and started climbing upon him.

“Leah, what are you doing?” Max asked a little confused while holding her so she would not fall.

Leah finally settled on his shoulders and grabbed his head. “Now walk”

“Like this?”

" Yes. It is your punishment for lying to me and calling me a bad person.” She said in a stubborn tone and I started laughing again.

“I was not completely lying,” Max muttered under his breath as he stood up easily with Leah on his shoulders.

“I am bigger than you!” Leah grinned down at me.

I pretend squinted at her, “oh my god Leah you are so tall.”

Leah then started tugging at Max’s hair.

“ow! What are you doing Leah?” He complained.

Leah continued pulling his hair to the right side.

“Leah!”

“But it worked in rat a tushy.” She pouted. I gave her an incredulous look.

" Ratatouille.” Max explained, ” Leah you are not a rat. And this is not cartoons. Don’t pull my hair again.”

We reached a huge ice cream parlor and the instant we entered all the females started eyeing max. I saw a lot of women gushing at the sight of Max carrying Leah on his shoulders. Of course, even I got some looks. Most of them were meant to kill.

Leah glanced up at the display of ice cream flavors thoughtfully.

“Get chocolate flavor .” Max prompted.

“No.”

“No?”

“No. You like chocolate. I don’t.” She said and then tugged his hair to the left.

" Ow. Ow.Leah!”

“To the left Maxy. To the left. I want to check the chocolate chip ice cream”

Max quickly walked towards the left. An idea struck me and I smirked evilly. Max caught my smirk and he widened his eyes in warning. Too late.

“Leah! Look at all the fruit flavors here.” I squealed pointing to the extreme right side.

Leah tugged on Max’s hair.

The moment they reached the fruit section I squealed, “oh my god! Look at the vanilla flavor fusions.” I was pointing to the left side of the shop.

Leah tugged on Max’s hair again. Max spared a vengeful glare at me.

I just grinned back and sang “payback is a bad bitch. And baby I’m the baddest.”

After a few more tug-Max’s-hair turns around the whole shop max finally stomped his way towards the guy behind the counter, ”pack a cup of each chocolate flavor ice cream. Be quick.”

“But I don’t want chocolate,” Leah whined.

“Yeah.” I piped in.

Max glared at me then looked at the guy packing the ice cream and spoke, “you are going to eat all those flavors because you DO like chocolate.”

“Momma said not to eat too much chocolate.”

“You are with me, Leah. You will eat as much chocolate as you want and you won’t tell mom.”

He titled his head to look at Leah and then raised his little finger to her, “pinky promise?”

Leah smiled at him and shook his pinky then she smacked a kiss on his temple and hugged his head.

Max smiled at her and kissed her hands. I seriously started doubting whether he was the same max who kept a neutral face in school.

By now there was a group of girls frantically adjusting their cleavage and makeup. Trying to get his attention by speaking in loud voices and deliberately brushing themselves up against him. But max turned a blind eye to all of them.

“Crystal will come with us. We will all watch a movie.” Leah smiled at me.

I smiled apologetically at her feeling uncomfortable, “no Leah. it’s OK.”

“But you didn’t come to see me for a week and now you don’t want to watch a movie with me. You don’t like me.” Leah said with tears in her eyes. I instantly felt guilty.

“Leah it’s OK. I don’t think crystal wants to come to my house.” I understood just how reluctant max was to show his house to me. And I was an opportunist.

“Leah. Of course, I will watch a movie with you.” I said grinning wickedly at max.

He shook his head vigorously, “I don’t think so.....” but max’s protests died when Leah started squealing happiness. He sighed and took a reluctant look at me.

I was going to see maxy’s home.

I smirked at the thought.
