Chapter 5: I make plans to runaway to Uruguay

Don’t feel stupid if you don’t like what others pretend to love.

- Emma Watson

Mr. James was going to decide who will be partners with whom this year. And quite honestly, I couldn’t care less. But my notion was not followed by others.

The girls were crossing their fingers and praying under their breaths- “please let max be my partner." while the guys were like- “please let me sit anywhere near April. She’s hot.”

Me? I was talking to a group of girls who just couldn’t stop gossiping about Max. It actually amazed me how I became an instant celebrity after trashing April. It was as if the whole school hated her but nobody voiced it.

“April doesn’t know a thing about chemistry. What is she doing here?”

“She bribed her way to AP chemistry so that she could be close to max.”

“I think she might become his lab partner too.”

A collective sad sigh from everyone.

“She bribed her way into AP chemistry to stay close to Max? Why?” I asked, obviously confused.

“Because they have a thing,” Grace said.

“A thing?” I asked raising my eyebrows.

“Yeah, I guess they did the friends with benefits thing and now April wants to be with him,” Daphne told me.

“I hope I’m not the unlucky girl who gets max as the lab partner,” Emma said.

All heads swiveled towards her.

“I...I mean look at April, she will probably kill anyone who takes Max away from her. She is a nasty witch.” Emma said, getting uncomfortable with all the attention.

I shook my head at them. Teenagers and their stupid worries.

“Carrie Fisher and Drake Penn” Mr. James called out. The two of them made their way towards their table.

“Maxwell Wester and...” the excitement in the class suddenly raised.

Tensions were high. Bets were placed. Prayers were muttered. April flipped her hair and started walking towards Max. Max did the courtesy of raising his head from his iPhone screen. And then Mr. James spoke the dreaded words...

“Crystal Winget.”

Collective gasps. Complete silence.

A millimeter smile on max’s face and me –“oui?”

I asked with a raised eyebrow, my confused state of brain meddling with the language I was supposed to be speaking.

“I said Maxwell Wester and Crystal Winget please take your seats.” Mr. James said.

Oh no. oh nononono. No .not .nay. Nahi.

I couldn’t be Max’s partner. I swallowed a dry gulp and ran towards my seat. I sat down on the stool as far away as I physically could from my own lab partner. This is insane.

First I tell April off in front of the whole school and now I take her boyfriend away from her. I could actually write a book on how to make enemies with the worst people on your first day of school. Then I would sell it and get some meager money. I will use that money to migrate to Uruguay and become a kindergarten teacher there. My name will be changed to ...Jamie Harrington. And I could learn the language of Uruguay...which is...which is...

I drew up a blank on that thought.

What is the language spoken in Uruguay?

The class had resumed and the handsome slash that. The cold max was busy listening to songs on his iPhone. I tapped my pencil on his notebook. He looked up at me. Irritated of course.

“What’s the national language of Uruguay?” I asked curiously.

“What?” Max asked with an incredulous expression on his face.

He removed his earbuds and turned his hot body towards me....stop thinking he is hot crystal!!!

“I asked you the official language of Uruguay?” I asked him again pronouncing each word delicately.

“Why the hell do you want to know that?” he asked me and then his blue eyes brightened, "oh that’s a nice way of trying to talk to me.”

I gaped at him with a disgusted look on my face.

“Contrary to your belief, I was actually making plans to migrate to Uruguay,” I said nonchalantly.

“Why Uruguay?” he asked leaning towards me.

“Because April and her hired mercenaries won’t imagine that I could be there,” I said looking at him.

“April? Hired mercenaries?” he asked tilting his head, a slight furrow between his eyebrows.

“She is going to kill me because I am your partner and she is not,” I said

“Why do you think so?” he asked. I sighed.

“Look at her. She is trying to burn holes into my head with her laser gaze.” I told him.

Max glanced back at April who was actually glaring at me. But the moment she noticed max looking at her she tried to give a sexy smile. Dumb bitch.

“I am pretty sure she will dump your body in the Mississippi,” Max said focusing his beautiful glacial blue eyes back at me.

“It’s all your fault,” I muttered under my breath.

“How did you know?” he asked me.

I froze “wait, it is all your fault.” I asked him

“No” he replied earnestly but I had caught a glimpse of his ‘I messed up’ expression.

“Liar “I declared.

"What’s the truth?” I needled.

He started putting his earbuds on. I pulled them out of his ears.

“Tell me goddamnit!! It’s my life that's in question right now.” I breathed out with severe emotion.

“Don’t be so dramatic. She won’t kill you, at least I hope so.” He muttered the last part under his breath.

“What did you do?” I asked him.

He sighed and eyed me up and down contemplating whether to tell me the truth or not.

“She bribed her way into this class and then bribed some people to become my lab partner too,” Max said.

“She is already your partner somewhere else?” I asked him.

“Yeah, my art class. She has no idea that there are different sizes of paintbrushes. She kept thinking I was referring to my ...paintbrush.” He told with a grimace.

“How does that add up to be your fault?” I asked him furrowing my eyebrows.

“When I got to know that she bribed people to become my partner. I bribed them back to not get her as my partner.” He told me.

“Okay just one question”, I asked him raising my arm.

Amusement flickered his features. This guy is eternally amused.

“Who are these ‘people’?” I asked him narrowing my eye. He gave me a small smile.

“The computer nerds.” He said.

Huh, understandable. Class started and for the next hour I tried to pay full attention to Mr. James but never in my life was I so damn distracted.

Max was hot. And I was a girl. I couldn’t help stealing glances at his profile. But I am proud to declare that I was a good enough actor that he did not notice it.

The moment bell rang; I snagged my books and hurried out of the class. Partly because I wanted to avoid April and partly because I was totally shaken up by sitting beside Max.

My nerves were frazzled and I cursed myself for developing a crush on max out of all people.

Sighing I made my way towards the next class. Art History.
