Chapter 41

The next two days were hell for both of them. Aaron was stuck inside his head and couldn’t get out. He hadn’t yet talked to Lorelai about the things he had heard from Hannah. And he felt bad that he kept his wife in the dark. And it was taking a toll on Lorelai. She was nauseous and looked pale.

Aaron wasn’t talking and it bothered Lorelai so much. She tried talking to Alex about it, but didn’t want to burden him since he and Joel were getting into parent mode with his sister Jane pregnant with their child and was almost out of the first trimester. Alex tried telling her that he had a stressful job and something probably happened.

“Don’t worry Lor. He will come around. Just give him a few days!” Alex said.

She didn’t argue, but let it go. But she didn’t know what to do since they weren’t talking. And that’s bothered her the most. They usually talked all the time about everything or texted when they had free time. But the zero communication was something new and Lorelai wasn’t handling it very well. She was struggling and tried throughout the day to text Aaron, but all she got back was one word answers. She knew the woman that she saw him with was the cause of all of this, but she didn’t know in what capacity.

Steve noticed the difference in his best friend but didn’t know what to do about it. Every time he brought it up, Aaron shut down the conversation instantly. Mimi didn’t have any better luck and Lorelai wouldn’t say anything either. They kept this to themselves and didn’t involve their parents.

Five days into the silence Aaron’s book arrived in the mail and Lorelai wrapped it up and when he got home from work, Lorelai gave it to him.

“I’m not sure what’s going on with us, but I made this for you from our honeymoon. There are some special pictures in the back that I put in for you. I hope you like it. I love you Aaron,” She said waiting.

Aaron opened it and found a picture book, “Thanks. I appreciate it,” then set it down on the table and walked outside.

Lorelai was crushed and couldn’t take it anymore. She looked at the back door, then walked upstairs and packed a bag. She walked back downstairs and got in her car. She drove around the city before checking into a hotel, exhausted and crawled under the covers. She cried herself to sleep, feeling her heart shatter into a million pieces.

Aaron was a little worried that she hadn’t come home by 10:30 and texted her. He got a response that he didn’t expect and threw his phone across the room when he read ‘go to hell’.

The next three days continued the same way. She stayed at a hotel, trying desperately to figure out what to do, ignoring phone calls from family and friends and thinking. Aaron drove around aimlessly after his shifts, not wanting to be home to smell her and see her in everything he touched and saw. He still hadn’t picked up and looked at the book she had made for him. The thought of seeing the pictures of them together was just too painful.

Lorelai made a decision one night and was going to confront Aaron and get to the bottom of whatever it was and make a path forward in whatever capacity she needed to take. She was done being stuck in limbo and had to have a plan going forward. If her marriage was over, then she needed to accept it and move on. She needed a plan. She couldn’t stand not knowing what was going on and she refused to go back to a toxic relationship again. She had too much to lose.

She went to the park where Aaron had lunch and waited under a tree in the July heat for him. He walked up with Thor and sat at the table with a bag of sub sandwiches. Lorelai waited a few minutes before she got the courage up to go over there. As she was walking over to the tables, the dark haired woman arrived and sat next to him. This just served to piss Lorelai off further and stomped over.

Aaron felt Thor stir under the table and gave the command for him to sit again, but saw Lorelai walking over to him, with a look of determination on her face. He felt his heart pound seeing her after so many days and a stirring in his gut, being so attracted to her.

“Aaron we need to talk,” She started, hating that her voice wobbled a little.

“He’s on his lunch lady-“ Hannah started.

“I didn’t ask your opinion Bitch! This is MY husband and I can speak to him if I want!!” Lorelai growled at the woman.

“Hannah, please don’t interrupt,” Aaron said.

“So this is Hannah, how lovely! This is the woman I saw you with the day this all started. So I suppose I have you to thank for this!” Lorelai spat.

“So this is the new wife. Cute Aaron, doesn’t seem like your usual type. She wasn’t what I pictured when I heard the stories, but whatever works for you,” Hannah said with a smirk.

“You REALLY don’t have much room to talk about ANYTHING! You cheated and tried passing off someone else’s child as your husband’s. Real classy!” Lorelai replied.

“You don’t know shit –“ Hannah started.

“Hannah, not now. You know it’s true so please don’t start more drama,” Aarons cut her off and turned to Lorelai, “Do you want to talk?”

Lorelai nodded, “In private as this is our marriage.”

Aaron nodded and got up, took the leash and turned to Hannah, “I’ll see you later Hannah.”

“If you need something call me Irish,” Hannah smiled, making Lorelai’s blood boil.

“You piece of-“ Lorelai started.

“STOP!” Aaron said, taking her hand and leading her away.

A few feet away Lorelai yanked her hand from his, feeling the burn and tingle of their skin touching, “Don’t touch me when you have been touching her!”

“Lor, I’m not sleeping with her, if that’s what you are thinking.”

“Bullshit! I saw you kiss her the day you came home different and turned our world upside down!” She cried. She felt Thor come and rest against her legs in support.

“You saw her kiss me, that’s it. I didn’t kiss her,” Aaron explained.

“I really don’t give a fuck, Aaron, who kissed who. You didn’t push her away and you broke your wedding vows. That’s all I know. And you broke my heart and I have no idea why!!” Lorelai cried.

“Hannah told me some information and I’m having a hard time processing it,” Aaron tried to explain, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand.

“What did she tell you? Let me help you process it! Let’s fix this! We can get through anything, we are strong and connected!” She pleaded.

“It was about you…” Aaron whispered.

Lorelai visibly recoiled, “WHAT? What the fuck can this woman know about me that could break our bond? Damage our love?! I have NEVER met her before!!”

“I know…That’s why I’m having a hard time with it. She heard things that could be very well be true and I-“

“What the hell could she say about me?! This woman cheated on you and broke your heart! You TOLD me that! It devastated you, and then you listen to something that she says to you supposedly about me and then don’t even talk to me about?!” Lorelai yelled.

“I know it doesn’t seem-“ He started.

“You have NO fucking idea what it seems like!” Lorelai said, wiping the tears from her face.

They stood there and looked at each other for several minutes, letting their feelings wash over each other. It was intense and was making Lorelai light-headed. She closed her eyes for a minute and swayed.

“Are you ok?” Aaron asked, reaching out and touching her arm.

She yanked it back, “Don’t.”

They stayed there looking at each other. Lorelai finally spoke first, “Aaron, I can’t do this anymore. I need to know one way or the other what is going on with us. I need to make plans and get settled. I have a time table and people to look out for. So if you can’t talk to me and figure this out like adults, then I’m done. We deserve better than this, I deserve better than this!”

Shocked by her words, Aaron could do nothing but stand there and look at her, letting her words rush around in his head. Lorelai took his words to mean that he was done with her and the tears started again and nodded her head.

“Your silence says a lot. I’ll get my clothes tomorrow. I’ll get the rest when I find a new place,” She said sobbing, then turned and walked back to her car and drove away.

Aaron could do nothing but watch her walk away and felt an emptiness take over him. He felt like he was watching his heart walk away. He never felt for Hannah the way he felt for Lorelai. Their love and bond was overpowering and he never felt more complete than he did the last 18 months with Lorelai. Having her as his wife was a dream come true and didn’t know why he was putting such stock in what Hannah was saying from that coach.

He packed up his lunch, no longer hungry and got Thor back in the SUV. They sat there for several minutes before he drove off, thinking about everything and coming to no conclusions. He was called out for a canine assist to sniff for drugs on a car and pulled up to find Steve assisting as well.

Aaron got out Thor and they did their little dance and Thor found the goods in two different areas and he was rewarded well with a treat and a special toy. He sat in the back seat chewing away happily as Aaron signed a few things for the officer and tried leaving, but Steve caught up to him.

“So what the hell is going on?”
