Chapter 10

Dinner was a subdued affair like always though the dining hall was a beautiful building. Kit and Mitsuhide had discussed it that it was more like a restaurant than a resort dining hall. She often wondered why people seemed like they were in a rush but realized early on it was because they were dosed with their meals and the couples would often go back to the cabins for the rest of the night.

Mitsuhide had mixed everything together, which left her looking at it and wondering if he could even taste the mess that was on his plate. She took her time and enjoyed the food for what it was. She waited for him to finish, and in true military form, he cleaned his plate. Though she helped herself to smaller portions, she never could finish it all.

He smiled at her, and she knew she had lost her heart for the fifteenth time that day. She smiled back as they left hand in hand to go for a quick walk around the retreat. They had learned to temper their feelings for each other and would enjoy some time with themselves before heading back to the isolation of their cabin for the night.

“This place is beautiful, don’t you think?” she asked.

“It is nice enough.” He said as he looked down at her, “You are the beautiful thing here.”

“Mitsu.” She said as she blushed. They overheard two other couples as they were walking.

“See that was us eight years ago!” the women said. “Now all you think about is sports or which new car to get.”

“Well someone has to think about those things. You certainly think your looks are the most important thing!” her husband spat back.

“That is because one of us should look nice.” She retorted.

“Well, all it does is draw attention to yourself. I guess the rumors about bob in accounting were true.” Her husband said.

“Well, Denise, in your office, seems to think she has a chance.” The wife said.

“Well, at least Denise talks to me.“, he said.

“I talk to you.” She replied.

“No, my dear, you talk at me. We never just talk like we used too. I mean your out here flirting with Tim from next door.” He said with venom.

“Tim talks to me.” She spat back.

“I wonder why?” her husband said. “You have been sneaking out of the cabin at night to talk sure.”

“Mitsuhide Let’s go back.” Kit said softly.

“I agree.” He said as he placed his hand on her back and they turned around and left the two couples there. One was fighting, and the other was left dumbstruck in awe of the fight. “You think they are being weaned off?”

“I think it may have worked just not on them.” She replied.

“Oh.” He said with a grin. “That makes sense.”

“Those are the two we need to watch.” She said with a faint smile.

“it looked like it could get really nasty quick between them.” He replied.

“I know. I think that is the reaction we need to watch with the staff.” She replied, and he nodded. “Whatever is going on here the staff knows. That is who we need to watch.”

“Got it.” He said with a smile. “Now for some other business.” He said as he kissed her on the walkway.

“Mitsuhide.” She said.

“Come on my beautiful wife let’s finish our walk and then go to the cabin.” He said with a smile.

“Sure thing.” She replied with a salute. He chuckled and led her down a different path that led to the private beach. Neither of them had been there before, and it was sunset she sighed softly as she saw the colors play out on the water and the sky. “Now, that is beauty.”

“It doesn’t remotely compare with you.” He said.

“Sure.” She said as she looked at him. “You have gone all cheesy on me.”

“I am just telling you like it is sweetheart. You have no idea how wonderful you really are, do you? Good. That is all mine. Now you are carrying my child as well. You are the most important thing in the world to me.” He said.

“I know Mitsuhide.” She replied as she placed her head on his shoulder as the two sat down on the beach and dug their feet in the sand. They sat there until almost darkness took over and they went back to the cabin.

“What are we going to tell everyone back home?” he asked.

“The truth.” She replied as she looked up at him as they went into the living room.

“The truth?” he asked.

“Yes, we were picked because we work well together and in the process, we fell in love. With that in mind that we also decided to grow our family.” She smiled.

“Well, it isn’t like we really had a choice on that one.” He smiled.

“But we did, Mitsuhide.” She replied. “We could have done anything to prevent it, but we chose not too. We didn’t even try to prevent it. So we chose to grow our family.”

“What do you want?” he asked as he touched the spot he thought their child was.

“I told you a healthy baby. Boy or girl is fine with me. I am sure we will have a few someday and whatever we have will be enough for me.” She replied as she looked up into his eyes.

“Well, whatever we have in this life I hope they are like you.” He said softly as he dropped his head to her neck. “I am the luckiest guy in the world, and the best part is I know it.”

“Well, I am glad you know it.” She replied.

“Did you want kids before?” he asked softly.

“I did, but I thought that no one could break my shell. I didn’t want to go it alone, so I thought they was nothing for me anymore.” She replied.

“I am glad I broke it wide open. I will take you any day, sweetheart. You are the perfect match for me. I do hope you know that. I can also make a promise to you right now. I won’t look at someone else. Not ever.” He said.

“Don’t make promises like that Mitsuhide.” She said softly. “They are to easy to break, even if you mean them right now.”

“God damn, I want to kill that guy.” He said softly as he kissed her neck.

“If it wasn’t for him, I would have found someone else.” She replied equally as softly.

“I know that too.” He said as he pulled back and looked into her eyes. “My love after we get back and before the baby is born I want to have a real wedding.”

“Why?” she asked.

“I want the world to see you are mine in every way. This is not a job-related thing that got out of hand. This is the real deal, and I want you front and center with me for the rest of my life.” he replied, and the way he was taken with the idea took her breath away. He really did mean everything he was saying. He wanted to get married for real, in front of their friends and co-workers. He wanted her right by his side forever.

“Yes.” She replied. “I will marry you again, Mitsuhide.”

“Good.” He sighed as he let his hand travel her back and sides. “No one would believe me otherwise.”

“You don’t think so?” she asked.

“Sweetheart, I am not known as a gentle man or even a nice one. Though you seem to think so for some reason. no one would believe that you are mine because you want to be.” He replied.

“But you are a kind and gentle man, Mitsuhide. The others just don’t see you the same as I do.” She replied.

“Well, I am glad of that.′ He replied. “For you, I would move the moon and stars.”

“I do believe Mitsuhide akechi you are a closet romantic.” She said with a chuckle.

“Only when it comes to you, my sweet love.” He replied as he looked down at her nudging her towards the bedroom. “I think the drugs are working.”

“The drugs are always working when it comes to you.” She said as she rolled her eyes at him. “However you are right, they are.”

“Then we should go and ease the effect a bit, don’t you think. Then you need to rest. Like eating, it is important. You have for very special cargo in there.”

“I’m not a plane.” She replied.

“Well, you bring me pretty high in the sky.” He said, and laughed.

“Mitsuhide!” she said as he bent down and carried her to the bedroom with no thought if anyone could have been watching them.

Mitsuhide awoke when he heard the slot in the wall shift. He was even more sure now he had been awake for every time the staff had looked into their rooms. He was waiting and listening to the people who watched them. He knew she was dead to the world as he could feel her breathing in and out as he lay there with her half covering him.

“These two have made excellent progress!” one voice said.

“They have. Did you hear she bought a test today in the store!” the second voice said.

“Good, Good.” The first voice said.

“Shall we cut their dose?” the second voice asked.

“No. this coupled is different. They need this for a little while longer.” The first voice said.

“We should find out if the test was positive.” The second voice said.

“We should. So we can monitor everything.” The first voice replied.

“They will want the child.” The second voice said.

“I know.” The first voice responded.

“Everything is as it should be, then.” The second voice said.

“Yes. As it should be.” The first said as the slot closed, and he heard the faint steps in the halls. He would be glad when he didn’t have to worry about people watching him and her as they slept. He also learned something that might have cracked the entire mission open. They were interested in the couples having children. That was the point Mitsuhdie and Kit’s theory wasn’t off. He was happy to know they were right all along.

The comment, They will want this child. Was the dead give away. They made it so people here would react to the drugs, or the aphrodisiac and then they would get pregnant. The couples who either didn’t want to have a child or who got pregnant with someone other than their spouses child had something to do with the success of the island. He wondered what they were doing and why?
