Pulling into the driveway, we stopped at the gate, John started to get out, but I stopped him, hopping out opening the gate and locked it after they drove through, hopping back in, but I didn’t bother putting my seatbelt back on, since we won’t be in the car much longer.
Derek and Eliot are back, I’m not sure how they beat us back here. “Can we take this thing off now?” Chloe asked as John stopped the car. “Yes you may take it off.” Thomas helped her take it off, and handed me back my scarf.
“What is this place?” She asked as we all got out of the car. “We live here, the five of us. We keep each other safe.” She gave me a look. “What do you have to keep safe from?” “Not now. We’ll talk after we get inside.” As John opened the back of the car, Derek and Eliot came out to help us, unload. Gravel crunching made me look behind us. Zander is running up the driveway towards us. “You have a horse?” I nodded as she came to a sudden stop in front of us. “Hey girl. I told you we wouldn’t be gone long.” Looking around. “Where’s Neala? Zander where is she?” Being part animal I have an odd connection to animals.
“Where is Neala? Come one tell me.”
Suddenly a small white blur started running towards us, stopping next to her mother. “There’s a good girl. Don’t worry we’ll have your home fixed in no time.”
“Scarlet, get Chloe in the house. We’ll be right behind you.” “Okay. Come on Chloe. I have to know what you’ve been up to since I saw you last.” I said as we got our stuff and headed towards the house.
As I opened the front door, I can partially hear the guys talking by the cars, but I can’t quite get what they’re saying.
Once the door closed behind us, Chloe got a wry smile on her face. “What? What are you smirking at?” “So which one’s yours?” “What are you talking about?” “Oh come on don’t give me that. I can see that you’re in love. You seem so different since the last time I saw you. Happier, more alive.”
Stepping further into the house, she grabbed my arm, stopping me. “Scarlet what happened to you?” I can’t look at her. Setting down my books, I took one her bags, and motioned for her to follow me, as I led her to a room she can use. “Not long after you left, I showed my family what I am. You know what I can do.” “You did what? How did they take it?”
Shaking my head.
“Not good. They called me a freak, and I flew out the window, I didn’t get back until late, so I went through my window. I decided I was leaving, so I made my plan, and got ready. In the middle of the night my mother came into my room and threatened me with a kitchen knife.” “Oh my god Scarlet! What did you do?”
“She stabbed it into my dresser, and left the room. I finished packing and left. I went back though. The guys took me, and I went home.” “What happened, how’d they react to seeing you?”
“About as well as you’d expect. But that part of my life is over, and this is my life now.” I said motioning to the house around us.
“I don’t know what to say, other than WOW!”
I nodded, as I opened a door, motioning her inside.
“You can stay here. It’s not much but it’ll do.” “Thanks, and look I’m sorry. I had no idea things were that bad when I left, if I had of known, I would have said come with me.” “It’s okay. I shouldn’t have told them. I was never supposed to live, as a baby, and because of that they resented me for it.”
Sighing I sat on the edge of the bed, while she had a look around.
“I think in a way I always knew I was going to have to leave, I guess I just didn’t want to believe it.”
She sat next to me on the bed, her blue eyes almost looking silver, boring into mine.
“So how did you end up being with a group of guys?” Chuckling. “I was on a bus heading here, and there was this guy on, and he kept staring at me, I fell asleep, and he woke me when we stopped. He offered to stay with my stuff while I stretched, and we started talking as we got back on the road, then.” Trailing off, starting to laugh again, at the memory.
“He drugged me, and brought me to his place. He knew that there was something different with me, and he also knew that I needed help. That’s how I met Thomas, he’s the other one that was with us.” “He kidnapped you? And you stayed with him after that?” I nodded, as the guys voices, stared coming down the hall.
“So what about the other three?”
“That is another story all together. Thomas told me not to leave the apartment, since I had no idea where I am. But I didn’t listen, and I left, taking a flight; but I got lost and these guys attacked me. They must have smelt my blood or something, because they came to my rescue. Bringing me back to Thomas, and they’ve stayed with me ever since, keeping me safe.”
“What would they have to keep you safe from?” her eyes and expression darkening. “There’s a pack of wolves that found out what I am, and are trying to get to me, they want to cell me to the highest bidder. They say I’m a rare commodity. All I am is a slab of meat to them.”
The look of horror on her face, says it all.
I nodded, knowing what she’s thinking. She pulled me into a hug, crushing my bones. She took a deep breathe, letting go of me.
“There’s something different about you. You’re still a shapeshifter, but there’s something else in there as well. What is it?”
“I’ll show you, but you can’t freak out on me. If you do then the guys will coming bursting in; and I know there listening.”
I said almost shouting.
“I promise I won’t freak out, just tell me!”
Opening my mouth wide so she can see, as my fangs descended from the top and bottom of my mouth.
“I’m half vampire now. At my birthday, some idiot pulled a gun at a vampire club in town, and before they could take him down, I was shot. Thomas and the guys got me home, but the bullet did too much damage, it didn’t matter how much blood they gave me, I died and I came back. So now I’m a vampire shapeshifter hybrid.” I closed my mouth, retracting my fangs. “So there you have it. That’s everything about me. So now tell me about you, what have you been up to since I saw you last?”
“Well after I left, I went to a bunch of different places; I worked as a rowdy for a band for a while. That was a blast; I joined a nest for a while, but I didn’t like it, so I left. I like being on my own for the most part. And started coming back here. I thought this would be a good place to settle down for a while.”
She got up and grabbed her small bag, coming back to bed, sitting next to me.
“Taking the bus, we stopped in your town to refuel, I tried to find you, but no one seemed to know anything about you. I didn’t know you last name, so I didn’t know how to find your parents. So I figured you left town, so I got back on the bus and resumed my trip here. I’ve been here for about a week. How long have you been here?” “It’s been about a year now.” “Well I am very happy that I ran into you, I was starting to get worried. Every town we stopped in, I got off and started searching for you, but it didn’t matter where I searched, I could never find anything. But now I have.”
“Now you have, and I’m very happy that you have. Things have happened, that I need someone else right now.” She stopped rummaging through her bag, looking up at me.
“What’s happened? As I walked through the door, I could tell that something did, but I didn’t want to ask, I figured if you wanted me to know then you’d tell me.”
“An old friend of Johns came here, she was a werewolf. We were attacked by the pack that’s trying to get me, her name was Bellatrix. Her sister was attacking me, and someone shot at her, and Bella jumped in front of the bullet, we couldn’t save her, she died in my arms. We buried her in the very back of the property.”
Tears started to prick my eyes, making me look away from her, so she doesn’t see.
“Then there was Ophelia. When I went home, she got off the bus, and the bus left without her. I didn’t want her anywhere near my town, even though I hate my family, I still love my town. So we offered her a ride, and she came to stay with us for a while. But she betrayed us. She tried to kill me, so dealt with her; this was her room. I’m sorry, but it’s the only room.”
She looked around. “It’s fine. I’m sorry she did that to you. If I had of been around, I would have killed her too. Here I bought this for you.” she said handing me a small bundle. “Thank you. You didn’t have to do that.”
It’s wrapped in purple clothe, tried with a ribbon.
Unwrapping it, I don’t want to wreck it, pulling out a corset top.
It’s dark red leather, with black laces at the back, it has a sweetheart neckline, with delicate black flowered lace covering the front.
“Thank you I love it.” Setting it aside, I hugged her, burying my face in her neck. A knock at the door broke us apart. John came in, smiling at us, he knew what was happening in here. “We need to talk, all of us.” I nodded, picked up my shirt and walked past him, giving him a peck on the cheek, with Chloe right on my heels.
I can feel her smiling at us.
