chapter 20

“John can you take Chloe into the kitchen, I need to check something. I won’t be long, just don’t torture her with questions until I get there.” “Sure, just don’t take very long.” I nodded and left the two of them; going to the bathroom; near the kitchen.

Wanting to see how it fits, I pulled off my shirt; even though the corset has laces, it also has a zipper at the side, it’s a perfect fit. My hair down, I look like a totally different person.

Walking into the kitchen, all eyes are on me, whatever anyone was doing; they stopped to look at me.

Chloe smiled, as she took a bite of whatever food they made. Doing a little spin I said. “Well what do you think?” “You look hot.” It’s Derek that said it, and as soon as he did, John gave him a look of death, he just smiled and turned his gaze back his food, trying not to laugh.

Sitting next to John, Thomas set a plate in front of me, sitting next to Chloe. “So what do we need to know girls?” Thomas asked sitting down with a plate of his own. “She won’t hurt me. You don’t have to worry about her.” She nodded touching my arm. “I wouldn’t do anything to hurt her. When I met her, she helped me, she’s the closest thing I have to a family. She saved my life. I would die before I hurt her.” She looked at me.

“I wouldn’t do anything to ever intently hurt her. You can trust me; but the real question is, can I trust you?” She asked looking from one face to the next, until settling on John.

“Yes you can trust us. We would never do anything to hurt her, we love her.” I know he’s really saying

‘I love her’ but he wouldn’t say it like this in front of the guys, he would never hear the end of it if he did.

After a moment, John looked at Thomas, then back at Chloe and nodded. “Alright, you say we can trust you. We are going to give you a trial period, we will see if we can truly trust you or not. Now if you’ll all excuse me, I have a call I need to make.”

He got up from the table taking his mug with him. I gave Chloe a smile, and caught something out of the corner of my eye. Neala is on the back deck. Standing I said. “How in the hell did she get up on the deck?”

There’s a dozen stone steps to get up to the back deck, there’s no way she could have gotten up there on her own.

Going out, setting my hand on her head.

“Neala what are you doing up here? Huh?” Chloe and the others came out, Zander isn’t anywhere to be seen. “She’s beautiful. But how on earth did she get up those steps?” “I have no idea. But she is a remarkable creature.”

She put her head against me. “You need to get back down there; you’re not supposed be up here.” I said, helping her back down to the back yard. Neala galloped off, running into the trees; disappearing from sight.

“Where ever did you get her and her mother?” Chloe asked, suddenly right beside me, putting her arm around my neck. “I don’t really know where they came from. I was on a walk, in the back there, and Zander came running up to me, and she hasn’t left. I didn’t know she was pregnant until we went out, and there she was with her new baby. Come on we should get back inside, its looks like it’s about to rain.” We started back up the steps, we got just through the door as the sky opened, and it started to pour.

“Well it looks like we’re going to be stuck in here for the next little while.” I said, as we all sat back at the table, as it thundered and lightning, causing the power to flicker.

“I think we need to get some supplies ready, in case we lose power.” Thomas nodded; and pulled out a box from the large cupboard.

“I have all that all ready to go. I have candles, flashlights batteries, and anything else I thought we might need.”

“Well that was good thinking on your part. I need to go talk to John, I will be back in a moment. Thomas, boys be nice to her. If you don’t; then I will know it and you will be sorry, for it.”

They nodded as I got up from the table, taking my mug with me. Chloe nodded at me, and started talking to Thomas, about what he does.

I found John in the small library on the main level, he’s just getting off the phone as I walked in. “Is everything alright?” I asked as I sat on the arm of his chair.

He nodded, and pulled me down onto his lap, rapping his arms around me, putting my arms around his neck.

“So tell me; what was all that about?” “It’s nothing. Just work, I have to go in tomorrow; or I lose my job. Since you know I haven’t shown for a while.” Nodding. “I get that. Its fine, but what about the others? Don’t they have jobs too?” He nodded, obviously not wanting to talk about this any longer.

“Well then you all have to get back to work, I’ll be fine, I have Chloe now; so you won’t have to worry about me.” “I will always worry about you, until we take care of the wolves; you will never be safe.” Looking into his eyes, stopping him from going any further. “We will take care of them. I have no doubt about it; we just have to be smarter than they are. We will get rid of them, we just have to be patient.”

Screaming we jumped from the chair, and ran for the kitchen. A single wolf is standing in the kitchen between us and the others. My change started to happen, and I let it, calling a white wolf, larger then this intruder.

Once it finished, standing there, ready to attack if this wolf does anything to my family.

Our intruder is a small black wolf that has a small white spot on his side, and gold eyes. Barring my teeth, John said. “I don’t know who you are, but I want you out of this house, and off our property. Change back, now.”

He wasn’t talking to me, he was talking to the wolf. The wolf didn’t move, he just started to growl at us, taking a step towards us.

“Don’t move! If you don’t change back, then this will be your last day on earth!”

The wolf chuffed and started to change back. He collapsed, as the change completed.

A moment later; a young man stood in front of us, staring at me, an ugly look on his face.

“Who are you, and what are you doing here?” “I came for her. All you have to do is give her to me, and I’ll let the rest of you live.” John moved in front of me, blocking me from sight.

“You will never get your hands on her. If you try and get your hands on her again, then all of you will die.”

“You will be the ones to die. She has done nothing to you, she belongs to me, and no one else.” “We will get her, one way or another. You will not be able to protect her forever, and when that day comes you will never see her again.”

He started for the window that he came crashing through, but Chloe jumped on him, pinning him down. He might be a werewolf, but he is no match for her, she’s over forty in vampire years. “Get off of me, you blood sucking vermin.” “Ouch that hurts a little. But you will never get the chance to hurt her. Well boys what should we do with him? We can’t just let him go. He will be back, and next time he won’t be alone. You know it, and I know it.”

Everyone looked at each other; then back at the wolf, trying to decide what to do with him.

“I think we should kill him.” Everyone looked at me, I can’t even believe what I just said, but it’s the truth “We can’t let him go or they will attack again; and next time stronger, you all know I’m right.”

“You can, not kill me. If you do then it will be an act of war.” John took a step towards him, hands balled into fists.

“We are already at war. Or hadn’t you noticed that from the last time you attacked us? You will never win.”

He moved back to me. “I want you to go back upstairs; I don’t want you to be anywhere near this, when it happens.” “No don’t do it in here, take him out of the house. I don’t anyone else killed in this house.” John nodded; motioning for the others to help Chloe with him.

“Still I want you to upstairs, I don’t want you anywhere this. You have had to deal with too much already.” I nodded and left the room, heading upstairs.

I heard John talk to the others; as they walked out the door heading out back. I have no desire to hear or see anything about what’s about to happen outside.

Grabbing my box of books, I headed to my room, walking into my room they got me another bookshelf, I blasted my music and started sorting my books.

A while later, I heard everyone come back in, I got all my books sorted, and threw out the box; sitting in the den, everyone came in, there talking; but there’s no joy in it; they have already taken care of him; they don’t seem to be to shaken by it, but they won’t show it because of me. “There you are. We’ve been looking for you.” John sat next to me; he smells slightly of blood, but it doesn’t bother me, I know he only did it to save me, and the others. We all sat there in the den; in silence feeling the collective energy in the room. “So I don’t mean to bring up the obvious but what are we going to do about the wolves? Because they won’t stop coming; until we deal with them.” Chloe said as if she’s been with us for months. She’s sitting next to Derek, who looked at her like she’s crazy.

“She’s right. We have to do something, but what that is, I don’t know exactly. But we have to protect our home; and our family. As weird as it is; but we’re all a family.”

He looked at us all; landing on John who nodded; and put his arm around me, holding me close to him.

“So what are we going to do now?” I asked, looking up at him. “For now let’s just enjoy our time before the next hit. Trust me there will be another hit, and when it comes we will deal with it. But for now let’s forget about the wolves and enjoy ourselves.” There’s a chest in the corner the room; John got up and went over to it, lifting a tray out and taking stuff out of it. Walking over to us, he handed us each a gun fill of silver bullets. He stopped at Chloe, and gave her a look. “Can we trust you? If we can, then I will give you one of these.”

“You can trust me. I will not do anything; to hurt any of you. I have been looking for someplace to settle down; and I think this place could be it.” “Good.” He said, and handed her the gun.

Settling back down next to me, he showed me how to use it; and took out a pack of cards.

We started playing, to pass the time, until someone comes up with something else to talk about, or something else to do.
