chapter 28

“Morning everyone.” I said stepping into the kitchen through the door heading out to the deck. “Where did you come from?” “Just having a look around outside, making sure we’re in the clear.”

“You’re not supposed to be doing that.” John said, stepping up to me, wrapping his arms around me. “No I didn’t know that, and I wasn’t gone long, so just relax, everything is fine out there. The horses are good, no one is around; you’re all safe.”

Giving him a quick kiss, I sat at the table with the others, while John and Thomas made breakfast for everyone. Only two of the three wolves are here; Sarah and Jack. “Where’s Lilly? She’s alright isn’t she?” “Yes, she was just having a shower; she’ll be down in a few.” Pouring myself a mug of Coffee, our young wolf walked in, sitting beside the others.

Sitting down with breakfast; John gave me a kiss, and started scooping out our food. “So after we’re done the five of us have to get to work. Our bosses called yesterday, and if we miss another day of work we won’t have a job to go back too. So the four of you are staying here until we get back.” “What? That is so not fair. I can’t be stuck in here all day, I’m going out of my mind.” I said a hint of wining in my voice.

“I don’t care. You’re all staying here while we’re gone. It’s the only way to ensure that you’ll be safe.” Sighing I nodded, taking a sip of my Coffee. “Good. You know I want to keep you safe right? All of you, we’re in this together, a family; one unit.” Sighing I took a bite of my food and listened to everyone talk around me.

By the time we finished the guys had to get out the door to get to work on time; leaving us to do the cleanup.

John gave me a kiss telling me he would call later to check in.

Once there gone, we cleaned up; and Lilly said they were going out to run the property, and told me to stay inside, or I had her to deal with. Grabbing some stuff I cleaned the whole house, from top to bottom. Taking a break I grabbed a book; starting to read; I noticed one of the guys left a bookmark in it, a photo of a raptor.

Thinking out loud.

“I wonder.”

Setting the photo down; I pulled off my shirt and focused on the photo; calling the change. I have no idea if this will happen or not; but I want to know one way or the other.

The change started, and everything in my body started to hurt; the pain started to be too much, and I want the change to stop; but it’s too late to do anything about it. Now I have to suffer the pain. My body started popping, and cracking as every joint in my body; ref-used together creating something new.

Standing tall, my new form complete, this feels weird; I’m seeing everything through new eyes, my vision is clear; and I can smell everything around me, like it has never been before.

Looking in the mirror I look terrifying and beautiful at the same time. Dark red, and black; I have no idea if I will be able to change back easily or not. “What the hell!?” Turning around; John is standing in the doorway, just shrugging his jacket off. “What the hell is going on here?” “John it’s me.” My voice is rough, trying to talk. I have no idea if he’s able to understand me or not. “Scarlet what is this? Look at you. You’re incredible!” He said walking around me. “Why are you like this?” “I wanted to try something different.” “Well this is most certainly different.”

He snapped a couple pictures of me; smiling the whole time. “The others are going to be so pissed they missed this.” Stepping back I called the change, focusing my human form clearly in my mind, and the reversal hurt just as much the change did. Just as the last of the change finished I stumbled, all my energy gone, John caught me before I hit the ground. “I’ve got you.” Holding onto me John helped me to the couch just as we heard the front door open.

“Anyone home?” Thomas called.

“We’re in the living room.”

“Look who I found at the bus station.” Walking into the room Thomas is holding the small hand of my baby sister Lyn.

“Lyn what are you doing here?” Dropping down in front of her pulling her into my arms. “Scarlet… You’re crushing me!” Moving back slightly looking her over.

“What are you doing here?” “Aren’t you happy to see me?” I nodded. “Of course I am baby. But why did you leave home like you did? Does mom and dad even know you left?” Just saying their names are making me mad. “They probably know by now.”

I was about to ask what she meant by that but the front door opened and everyone else walked into the living room. “What’s going on?” “Who is she?” Stopping everyone so they don’t scare her. “Sweaty stay here. I need to go have a talk with the others.” She nodded taking her bag from Thomas. I ushered everyone to the kitchen, out of earshot of her.

“Scarlet who is that?” Sighing I grabbed a stack of glasses from the cupboard. “That’s my baby sister Lyn. It would appear that she has run away from home.” “But why is she here?” “I don’t know, I told her where I am, but I never thought she would run away like that. Something must have happened back home.”

Grabbing a pitcher from the fridge. “I have to find out what’s going on with her.” Lilly Sarah, and Jack changed into wolves and everyone followed me back into the living room.

Lyn is standing at the bookcase.

“There is no doubt she’s Scarlet’s sister.” I heard Derek say to Eliot, who is at the back of the group.

“Lyn honey. Come and sit down. We need to talk.” We sat on the couch together, John sat in one of the chairs.

Derek Eliot, Thomas and Chloe are standing against the wall, with the three wolves sitting in front of them. Almost like there guards or something.

“Lyn why did you run away? What happened back home?” She sighed. “Scarlet something did happen to me. I had to leave there, like you did.” “What do you mean, like me?” “I’m like you now. I can shift animals; just like you can.” Mouth agape, I can’t believe what she just told me.

Finally able to speak. “What? When?”

“The first time was two weeks ago. Since you left things have been different. Mom and dad have been acting strange towards us.”

She said lowering her head for a second.

“Tory and I barely speak or interact with each other anymore.”

She looked at everyone. “Scarlet who are all these people?” I cleared my throat.

“Well. This is my family. And now there your family as well. You know Thomas of course. That’s John in the chair, then there’s Derek, Eliot and Chloe. I told you about Chloe a long time ago.” She nodded. “You told her about me?” I nodded.

“Yes. Now the three wolves here, are Sarah, Lilly and Jack.”

She gave me a look. “You have pet wolves?” “Well sort of. Honey there werewolves. And everyone else are vampires.” She got up and went over to the wolves, kneeling down in front of them.

“Lilly. Sarah. And Jack.”

Pointing at each one of them; getting it right. “It’s nice to meet you all as well.” Mouth agape. “Lyn are you talking to them?” She nodded. “Yes. Can’t you?” Shaking my head. “I don’t know. I’ve sort of talked to the horses, but not wolves. Lyn honey, what’s your animal? Are you Raven like me?”

She shook her head standing. “I’ll show you.” She backed away so she has some more room.

She closed her eyes and the change started. As it finished standing in front of us, is a white tiger, with bright blue eyes.

“Wow Lyn. You’re amazing. But I’m so sorry that this happened to you.”

Kneeling down, she came up to me. As I touched her head, I can feel something in my mind, like someone is trying to open a door.

“Scarlet can you hear me?” I nodded.

“Yes I can, I can hear you now. It’s faint but it’s there.” I said looking at the others, saying all this out loud.

“Can you change back now?” Taking a step back, she reversed the change, I pulled her into a hug, holding her tight. “I love you Lyn. You are so brave, and so strong. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

I looked at John. “We need somewhere for her to sleep.” “I’ve already got a call in, I have someone brining in some furniture. We’ll turn the office into her room.”

I nodded. “Thank you John. Lyn honey, why don’t you and the wolves go see the horses, we need some grown up time.” She nodded, and Sarah pulled at her coat, leading her out of the house.

Talking to her mind, hopefully it will work. Focusing on her mind alone.

“Sarah if you can hear me, you look after my baby sister. Nothing will happen to her. If it does, I will hold you responsible.”

Looking back at me. She dipped her muzzle in a nod and they left. “Now more than ever, we have to deal with the pack. I won’t let anyone get their hands on her.” “We won’t. Those wolves will never get their hands on her. I will protect her and you at all costs.” Something caught my eye, staring at the window, looking out; there are three horses, running through the yard.

“She is a marvelous creature isn’t she?” “Yes she is! My little sister is like me now.” We watched them run around, until the wolves collapsed from exhaustion.

“I guess she wore them out.”

Looking at the clock it’s after five, I guess we should make dinner.

“Eliot go out and watch them while we make dinner.” He nodded and left while the rest of us went to the kitchen.

“What are we going to do?” “What do you mean?” “We now have another shapeshifter in the house. If the wolves find out about her, they will stop at nothing to get to her, and to you.” “We have to find a way to keep her safe. I will not let them get their paws on my baby sister.” John handed me a glass of blood, I can’t let her see me drink it, not yet.

Looking at the table, there really isn’t enough room for all of us now.

“Hey guys why don’t you go set up the dining room? There isn’t much in the way of room in here.” Chloe nodded, and the three of them grabbed dishes while John and I stayed in the kitchen cooking.

The doorbell rang, sending the wolves outside crazy, opening the door, there’s a truck with furniture sitting in the driveway.

“Hey man. Thanks for coming.” “No problem. Just tell us where to go, and we’ll have you all set up.” John nodded and led them to the office, now Lyn’s room. Going back to the kitchen to stay out of the way, I watched them run around the back yard. I don’t think I have ever seen my little sister this happy. Who would have thought that her becoming like me would do that for her? Just about done dinner, John came back in. “Everything is set in her room. I think she is going to love it, and so will you.”

Wrapping my arms around his neck. I love him, so much, even more so for taking care of Lyn like this, even though he barely knows her. Pulling his head down, pressing our lips together. “Damn would you two get a room.” breaking apart Lyn and the wolves are standing in the door at the deck. “Hey you want to see your new room?” She nodded, taking my hand.

I’m not sure why there still in wolf forms. I hope they know that they can trust her, she won’t hurt them.

She cares for them, I know she does; even though it’s only been a few hours, I can see it in her eyes.

Walking into her room, there’s a bed, but we’ll have to get some new sheets and things. There’s a dresser, a small table with a mirror and a night stand beside her bed. “Thank you all I love it.”

She said giving us each a hug. She is an amazing little sister. “Okay dinner is ready. Let’s head out there.” As we walked out to the dining room, a crashing sound, coming from the living room. The wolves’ fur bristling, teeth bared growling.

“What the hell was that?” “Scarlet get Lyn and take her up to your little room. Lilly go with them. Keep them both safe.” I want to argue but the look he’s giving me right now; I shut my mouth and ran to our room with a wolf right behind us.

Closing the door, I listened for anything coming from downstairs.

I can hear crashes, but that’s about all I can hear. Please be alright, I can’t lose any of you. You’re all I have left.

Everything’s gone quiet, I want to get out of here and go check on them, but if something has happened; and there still here, John will kill me if I leave this room. So I have to wait.

We’ve been stuck in here for who knows how long, I can’t stand it, I just want to get out of here and check on the others. They have to be okay.

Tensing, footsteps are coming towards us. “Scarlet it’s me, open the door.” Sighing in relief, I opened the door, John looks like crap, he has blood all over him, and cuts that are already healing over.

“What happened out there?” Taking my hand, he led us out. Walking downstairs, the place is trashed. What the hell happened down here? There are bodies all over, covering Lyn’s eyes, I told Lilly to take her to my room, while we got this place cleaned up.

“Werewolves attacked us. There were only a few, but they were strong.” “How did they get through the gate?” “We don’t know. But we got them, your safe, your all safe.” Looking at the others, there not in very good condition, all covered in blood, cuts and gashes that are healing over.

“We have to get rid of the bodies, and get this place cleaned up.” going to the kitchen, I got bags and all the other cleaning products.

Going back out, Jack and Sarah have changed back. “Thank you both for protecting us.” They didn’t say anything, just grabbed bags and started cleaning up. The fighting went all over the first floor; it’s going to take hours to clean this all up.

How did all this happen? All I wanted was to start a new life when I ran away from home. Now all the wolves are trying to kill the ones I love, just trying to get to me.

This has to stop; I have to stop it, I just don’t know how to do it.

Grabbing another bag, I filled it with broken glass, and things that we can’t save. “Thanks. See you soon.” John came in, closing his phone.

“Okay everyone, my friends will be here soon with everything we need; to get this place back to normal.” Taking the bags outside I went to check on the horses. “Hey you two; how are you?” Jumping over the fence, checking them over. “You look okay. I’m sorry about what happened to you. Nothing is going to happen to either one of you.”

Kissing their heads, I went back up to the house just as two pickup trucks pulled in, filled with stuff. John and the others came out, the wolves hesitant behind the others, their teeth bared. “Down.” I said walking up the step, beside them.

“It’s okay. Nothing will happen, they won’t hurt you. There friends, it’s okay.” John and Thomas went down, hugging the others as climbed out of the trucks. “Thank you so much for getting everything for us on such short notice.” He said shaking the one guy’s hand. “Hey anything for you guys. Let’s get started.” Nodding I said. “Ok let’s go down and give them a hand.”

Lyn is the first one down the steps running over to John. Smiling we followed her example.

Looking at everything in the back of the trucks, there’s tools food, new windows; and anything else we need to get this place back to its original glory.

“Todd I want you to meet Scarlet. She’s the one I’ve been telling you about.” “It’s wonderful to meet the girl that has our John here so infatuated.” He said taking my hand in his, kissing it.

Smiling we got to work, unloading everything they brought for us. Taking everything into the house, we got directed where it’s supposed to go. They even brought us food, and blood. That’s weird.

“Alright everyone let’s get to work. Scarlet you’re with me.” He said taking my arm, leading me to the den.

Finishing everything in the house, we’re all sitting around the table eating. Their friends are great. They really came through for us.

“So Scarlet. What do you see to showing us some of what you can do?” Looking at John, he nodded; setting his glass down. Getting up from the table, moving away from him. “Ok let’s get started.”

First I’ll show them my true form, then show them something fun. Calling the change, my raven form emerged. Flying up, landing on the table, spreading my wings wide.

“Wow you look beautiful Scarlet.” Flapping my wings, landing on the floor, bringing another form to mind, a lioness. Trotting up to them, sniffing all of them; they all smell like vampires.

John took my photo and watched as I changed back.

Smiling at everyone their all looking at me, huge smiles on their faces. “I have one more I would like to try, but not in here. Everyone come outside with me.”

Walking out back going to the edge of the deck. “I have been wanting to try this for a while. Now is the perfect time.” Closing my eyes, spreading my arms.

Calling my raven wings forth, feeling them come from my back, spreading wide.

Flapping my wings, lifting off the deck soaring through the air. This feeling I have, it’s unlike anything I have ever felt in my life. I have never felt more free in my life, I wish Lyn could be up here with me, but she can’t, she can’t let the others know that she’s like me, at least not until I know them better.

Landing back on the deck, I pulled my wings back in, and smiled at everyone. The way there all looking at me right now, it’s like their seeing me for the first time or something. Walking up to them, a huge smile on my face. Lyn had the biggest smile I have ever seen on her face. “Let’s head back in.” Taking Lyn’s hand everyone followed us back in, the guys cleaned up while we went upstairs to my room. The wolves stayed downstairs though.

“That was amazing.” Lyn said jumping on my bed. “Can I try it?” Shaking my head, sitting next to her on my bed. “No. Not right now. They can’t know you’re like me, at least not until we know that we can trust them completely.” “Fine.” She started pouting.

“Don’t do that. It’s to keep you safe. I don’t really know them, I just want to keep my baby sister safe.” I said pulling her into my arms. “I know. I just want to try and have some freedom. I left home so I could be safe. I’m safe now, here with you and everyone else.”

Someone knocked on my door. “Come in.” Lilly poked her head in, a nervous look on her face.

“What’s going on Lilly?” “There’s something downstairs that you need to see.” Nodding we got up and followed her back downstairs where everyone is standing in the foyer.

“What’s going on down here?” I asked stopping next to John. No one said a word, so I stepped forward, there’s a black wolf sitting by the door, it’s a werewolf I can tell that much, I don’t think it’s a threat, but I can’t be sure of that. “Who are you?” I asked kneeling down in front of her. “You can change back now, we’re not going to hurt you.” The wolf started to change back, and within seconds, a young girl is standing there, she’s covered in dirt, her clothes are dirty and ripped.

“Blue?” Lilly said pushing past us, hugging the girl. “Who is blue?” “She’s from our old pack, she helped us leave, but wouldn’t leave herself.” “Lilly? I can’t believe I finally found you!”

She said tears streaming down her face, hugging her tight. “Come on, let’s get you cleaned up, then we’ll talk.” I said taking the girls hand, and leading her to one of the bathrooms to get her cleaned up. Lilly followed close behind us. “What are you doing here?” “Later.” I said turning the light on. “Get cleaned up, and I will get you some clean clothes. Everything you need is in there.” “Thank you.” She said closing the door.

“Stay here while I get her some clothes.” “Alright. Thank you for helping her.” “Of course. I won’t be gone a moment.” Going to my room, I grabbed some clothes, she’s smaller than me, practically skin and bones, but one of my dresses will have to work for now.

Heading back down, I heard the shower turn off. “Blue I have something for you to wear.” I said knocking on the door.

“This will have to do until we can get you some new clothes.” Handing her the dress she closed the door and came back out a moment later. It’s a little big, but it works for now. “Come on, let’s get down there.” Taking her hand, she seems so scared right now, I know what it’s like to be scared like she is right now, but she’s going to be all right, we’ll make sure of it. Going into the living room, everyone is in there, including their friends. “Have a seat girls. We have a lot of things to discuss.” Sitting on the couch.

“So tell us what happened to you.” John asked Blue. “I was so scared being there. You have no idea what the pack has become. It’s horrible there now. I knew I could get out, so that’s what I did, I ran and didn’t look back.”

I gave John a look who nodded, and left the room, and came back a moment later with a plate in hand.

“Here take this. You need to eat.” “Thank you.” Taking a bite she continued her story.

“Our Alpha got wind that I helped you three leave the pack, he hurt me, starved me. After a couple days, they let me out, threw me in the middle of the pack, starved and almost dead, to be an example to the rest of the pack, to let everyone know that you don’t get out of line and go unscathed. So when things got calm again, I made my plan and got away. At first I didn’t know where I was going, but then I remembered something that the Alpha said, I made my way here, he knows where this place is, you all know that, he has a plan to take this place on.” “We all know that as well. We just don’t know when it will be happening.”

“Well I do.” She said setting the plate down, and stood. “They will stop at nothing to get you, Scarlet. I know what they’re planning. I’m just not sure when it’s going to happen.”

“Tell us everything you know.” She nodded, sitting down again. “Alright. They have strength, other packs have joined him, they’re afraid of him as well. But they don’t have much of a choice in the matter, they either joined him, or be destroyed. They are going to send their strongest in first, you won’t stand a chance against them. You all have to leave, just pack up and move; you all will be safe again.” “We’re not going to run, we are going to fight them and win, to protect our home.”

I said standing. “We will take them all down, and restore order to the packs once again.” She shook her head. “You’re all crazy. You don’t stand a chance against him! You will all be destroyed.” “We will. Boys let’s move out.”

Just like that, all the boys left, leaving us girls in the room. “What just happened in here?” Chloe said looking at us all. Shaking my head. “I have no idea. But right now, you need to get some rest. You’ve had a hard day. Follow me.” Taking her up to my little room, Lilly stayed with her, heading back down I went to my room, lying on my bed, suddenly very exhausted.

As soon as my head hit the pillow, sleep overtook me.
