Unexpected Love

Six Months Later

Sarah woke early in the morning. She stretched as she sat up in bed and took a minute to fully wake before getting up. Sterling was already gone for his morning duties. She dressed and made her way slowly down the stairs. She checked the time and realized she had enough time to go and check on the plot out back. The winter had been long but it was starting to warm as spring attempted to make its way in. She felt the ground, she could probably start panting in a week or two- once she was sure the last frost had come through.

Sarah walked back in to the house and began setting the table for breakfast as Martha walked in. “Good morning dear!” Martha chimed as she set a large tray of eggs on the table.

“Mornin’ Martha, how are y’all doing?”

“We’re fine, you?” Martha replied. After Garrett had finally gotten to speaking with Brick they came up with an arrangement that worked for everybody. Martha and Garrett had married in October and had moved into a small house settled in the property and they rode up in the mornings to work.

Sarah laughed, “So you’re still keeping him?”

Martha rolled her eyes, “It depends on the day!”

Loud laughter and talking caught their attention as the men made their way into the house.

Sarah exited the dining room to find the three men stomping their boots off on the porch talking about their plans for the day.

Sterling turned and Sarah caught his gaze. They smiled warmly at each other as he walked up to her. Sterling wrapped her in his arms and placed a strong, deep kiss on her lips. “Good morning my darlings.” He gave her a kiss on the cheek and then rubbed his hands on her swollen belly and bent to place a kiss on it.

Sarah cupped his cheek with her hand. “Good morning love.”

Brick walked past, “Hows my grand baby treating you this morning?”

“Better, less tired.” She smiled.

“Good, good..” Brick trailed off as he walked away into the wash room.

Sterling pulled her close. “Come help me wash up?” He breathed, a smirk on his face.

Sarah laughed, “Mr. Evans you’re shameless.”She smacked his arm and walked into the dining room.

Ten minutes later the men all entered the room and took their seats. Sterling sat beside Sarah and leaned over to give her a peck on the cheek. She smiled at him and gave his hand a squeeze.

“I took a peek out back, looks like we’ll be able to plant soon in that garden of yours.” Brick stated as he served food on his plate.

Sarah took a sip of her tea, “Yes! I checked it this morning as well. I’m looking forward to spring planting.”

“You had a good harvest this fall.” Sterling added. “I bet you’ll get an even better one this summer.”

“That’s the hope!” Sarah smiled before grimacing. “Oof.”

Sterling looked at her concerned. “You alright Sarah?”

“Mhm.” She nodded, rubbing her belly. “Little one is just kicking real good this morning.”

Sterling’s eyes brightened and he placed his hands on her belly, excitement filled his face as he felt the small kicks of their baby. “Pop! Come feel this!”

Sarah laughed as Brick jumped out of his seat and around the table. Sitting on the other side of Sarah he placed his hands on her belly, his eyes bright when he felt the kicks.

“It’s a boy for sure!” Brick boomed, “Those are some strong legs!”

Sarah laughed as the men resumed their breakfast.

After they ate Sarah took a seat in the rocker on the front porch, imagining that in a few months she would be sitting there rocking her baby to sleep.

Sarah was happy and she smiled as she looked around her home, watching the men gather their horses and head out for the day. The home she was making here was better than she could have ever imagined. She had so much love for her little family.

Sterling pulled his horse up to the house and tipped his hat at his wife. “I love you,” he called out.

Sarah smiled, “I love you too.”
