5 - No Damsel In Distress
James smiled at the end of the video that ended without warning. He remembered exactly when that was taken. It was taken on the day they met.
When Shine woke up, she started filming for her video journal around her room while she tried to unpack the bags and boxes she brought home from New York.
"Oh shit!" She mumbled as her camera flashed a low memory warning.
She read the labels on the boxes and checked her bags but she can't seem to find the bag where she kept her SDXC cards.
With her camera in hand, Shine marched to the guest room next to hers where they placed some more of the boxes that didn't fit in her room.
She walked in and closed the door. She immediately spotted the box and opened it.
As she rummaged through its contents trying to locate the memory cards, she heard the bathroom door open. Shine turned and screamed as she saw a tall man with damp hair and only a towel wrapped around his waist emerge.
"I'm sorry, Miss Sunshine. I didn't mean to startle you." The man spoke and Shine couldn't help but note that his voice was kind and sincere. "I didn't know you'd be here."
Now that her initial shock has subsided, Shine also noticed how handsome the man was with deep dark eyes and a high-bridged nose. He has fair skin, pink lips, a strong jawline and a cute dimple on his left cheek. She observed how his ears turned bright red as she stared at him probably because he stood there half-naked. Not that he had anything to be ashamed of.
"Aside from his slightly thick belly, those hard muscles on his shoulders, chest and arms should not be kept under a shirt." She thought but when she spoke, her tone did not appreciate anything about him at all.
"Who the hell are you?! And why the fuck do you know my name?!" She asked with a raised eyebrow.
"You can't use that language in this house, Sunshine." Ted said from behind her.
Her parents were alarmed when they heard her scream and rushed upstairs to check on her.
"Sorry, Dad, but who is he and what is he doing here?" Shine answered as she turned to look at her parents.
"He's your private nurse. He's here to take care of you."
"WHAT?!" She exclaimed. "I DO NOT need a nurse and I can very well take care of myself. Thank you very much." She proudly lifted her chin up and crossed her arms over her chest.
Shine then looked at James and addressed him coldly. "You should leave. You're not needed here."
James looked down and fidgeted as Shine stared him down before turning to her parents again.
"Mom, Dad, while you have both surrendered to the fact that I am dying, I'd like you to know that I am still trying to live a life here. I do not need to be reminded that I could soon lose the ability to tend to myself. He..." She spat bitterly then paused as she glared at James again.
"He is now just a big neon sign that says I only have a few years to live at most. So... No, Thank you. I do not need a private nurse." Shine said as she grabbed her camera and the pouch that held the memory cards and angrily stomped out of the room.
James and her parents stood quietly staring at each other until they heard the door to her bedroom close with a bang.
"I'm sorry about that, James. Shine is not usually like this. She's usually friendly, cheerful and fun to be with but she could have an explosive temper." Ted told James. "You just met the latter part."
"I understand." James politely answered. "I'll leave right after I wear my clothes on so I can get home before it gets too late."
"No, please. Don't leave. Let me talk to Sunshine again. I think she was surprised just now," Ann said. "Please stay. We need you here."
James nodded his head and smiled. "Okay, Ma'am. Thank you."
Ted and Ann left the room to talk to their daughter while James was left to hope against all hope that Miss Sunshine allows for him to be part of her life.
