My friends hold my arms as I watch, helplessly, as the man I called friend shoots her in the back and lets her fall into the alley below. The man runs away as she lays there, bleeding on the wet concrete ground. My friends let me go and I run over to her. I hold her in my arms, crying.
“Please! Please stay with me!” I beg, “please! Everything’s going to be fine, you’re going to be okay,” I sob.
My hands are drenched in crimson-red blood, but I don’t care, all I care about is that she survives. My friends look at her, horrified. I look to April.
“April, can you save her?”
She doesn’t do anything. She just looks at me with teary eyes.
“Sage?” I ask. She does the same as April. Their eyes are all I need to understand what they are saying, I’m sorry, but she’s gone.
I hug her motionless body and cry into her chest. “I... hate him! He has ruined everything!” I yell through muffled sobs.
“I know,” Kate says, kneeling next to me, letting me cry into her shoulder, “At least, she’ll be happy and peaceful next to all the people we have lost over a couple of years."
When Griffin picks the girl up to take her to the morgue, a note falls out of her pocket.
I pick it up and look at it.
I didn’t know what to think of the note in my hand. Can I never be happy in a world like this? the contents of the note make me ask myself.
This is a part that happens in a future book in this series.
