#63 The General plays matchmaker

General Fluffington looks way less groggy when we swing by the vet after dinner to pick him up. Thomas sinks down onto his knees and cuddles with him while I go take care of the paperwork, the bill, picking up the instructions for his recovery, that kind of thing. Joshua has his arm around me while I talk to Tracy, and I notice that Tracy is smiling a lot more warmly at me now that it’s obvious that I’ve got a boyfriend who isn’t Thomas. The way she keeps looking at him… Yeah, she’s definitely got the hots for him.

I tell the guys to take the General to the car in his carrier while I finish things up in here, even though I’ve got everything taken care of already. Joshua gives me a curious glance, but leaves without a comment, holding open the door from Thomas.

“So…” I lean against the reception desk and look at Tracy. “Do you want me to give you his number, or should I give him yours?”

“W-w-w-what?” she stammers, looking up at me with wide green eyes.

“He’s a really good guy,” I tell her. “Good with animals, sweet, funny, caring. And one hundred percent single, in case you were wondering.”

“I don’t know who you’re talking about,” she says, glancing at the computer screen and typing something – probably faking being busy, since there isn’t anyone in here besides me and her. She’s trying to remain professional, but I’m not having it tonight.

“Thomas, the guy you’ve been checking out every single second he was in here.” I laugh when she sighs in defeat. “Like I said… do you want his number?”

“He’s your ex, right?” she asks, looking at me with a wry smile.

“Not really.” I shrug. “I mean… no, he’s not my ex. Fact is, he’s single and ready to mingle.” Oh God, that’s such a lame thing to say.

“Okay, give me his number.” She’s smiling a little now and flicks her long blonde hair over her shoulder. “You’re right, I was checking him out. He’s very…”

“Hot,” I agree right away. “Yeah, he is.”

She chuckles. “Yeah, he’s hot. And very sweet.”

I nod and take her phone from her outstretched hand, entering Thomas’ number. “Don’t wait too long to text him,” I tell him. “He’s never single for long.”

“That doesn’t surprise me at all.” She looks down at her phone with a small frown. “Doesn’t it seem a little… desperate to text a guy whose friend just gave me his number without him even knowing? I’m just the vet tech.”

“Life is short,” I press. I want Thomas to find someone, and this girl seems nice enough. If there’s one thing I’ve learned these past months, it’s that it is just fucking stupid to not follow your gut and tell someone how you feel. If I had told Aston sooner that I was in falling for him, he would have cut me off before I got hurt so badly. If Annabel and Aston had owned up to their feeling sooner, they would have gotten together way earlier than they did, and all the baby daddy drama never would have happened. And me and Josh… I smile to myself. If he hadn’t stepped up and kissed me even though we were trying to be friends and nothing more, I wouldn’t be with him now, and being with him makes me extraordinarily happy.

“Thanks,” Tracy says. “I don’t even know your name.”

“Francesca. You can call me Franny.”

“Thank you, Franny.”

I leave the veterinarian and slide into the backseat with Thomas. Joshua is driving, and I want to be with the General in the back. He’s hissing in his carrier, and it takes both me and Thomas to calm him down. Thomas grabs my hand when Joshua pulls out of the parking lot, and he squeezes it tightly.

“I’m really sorry about all of this, Fran.”

“Like I said, shit happens. It’s not your fault.”

We smile at each other, and it’s so fucking good to finally have my friend back. He opens his mouth to say something, but his phone buzzes loudly in his pocket, and he pulls it out with a frown. He unlocks the screen and reads whatever text just popped up. He turns his head to me with an amused smile.

“Franny…” He gestures at the screen. “Why is Tracy the vet tech texting me right now?”

“Oh wow, she moves fast.” I chuckle. “I gave her your number.”

“You really don’t need to find me anyone,” he says, rolling his eyes.

“She seems nice, and you’re single, so what’s wrong with giving both of you a little nudge?” I bump his arm and wiggle my eyebrows. “Are you going to text her back?”

“Yeah,” he says with a little smile. “She asked me out for coffee. I’m gonna tell her yes.” He looks excited by the prospect of going on a date with her, as he should. She’s really pretty and good with animals. What more could he want?

“Are you sure you want to go to dinner at Aston and Annabel’s?” I ask Joshua for the millionth time. I’m still a bit surprised that they invited us over, and I just can’t imagine sitting across the table from them with Joshua. I love Aston – as a friend, of course – and I respect the hell out of Annabel, but to hang out with them with my new boyfriend… It’s a little weird.

“Sure,” Joshua says, not bothered by the prospect of going to the house of someone I used to fuck. “Shaughna and Dshawn are coming too, right? I haven’t seen her in a while. It’ll be nice catching up.”

Oh. Right. He slept with her. I keep forgetting that. Not that I mind. That’s in the past, and Shaughna is deeply in love with Dshawn. Besides, even if she wasn’t, I know Joshua only cares about her as a friend. I’m not sure if he’s in love with me yet, but he sure cares about me. He’s not the type that would ever cheat. I trust him with my heart.

“You look hot,” I tell Joshua, taking in his black jeans and grey T-shirt. It’s plain and simple, but he looks good no matter what he wears. I love him in jeans, sweats, naked… Hmm, I think I like him bast naked and covered in whipped cream, actually… lactofree whipped cream, of course.

“Why are you giving me sex eyes?” Joshua asks with a smirk.

“Maybe I’m trying to seduce you,” I reply, pulling the shirt I just put on back over my head and unclasping my bra. “Is it working?”

He gestures at his pants, where an obvious bulge is forming. “Of course it is. You’re the hottest girl on the planet, Fran.” He pulls me against him and grunts when I grind against him, eager to get him naked. “We’re going to be late,” he breathes when I kiss his neck.

“Then we’ll be late,” I say, not caring one bit. I want him. Now.

We undress swiftly and tumble onto the couch, where I kiss my way down his body until I slide down onto the floor so I’m kneeling in front of him. I wrap my lips around his cock and suck hard before swirling my tongue over the tip, making him moan.

“Fuck,” he says in a dark tone. “That feels good.”

I blow him until my jaw hurts, and I can tell he’s close. Very close. I smirk a little when I pull back, knowing I’m driving him crazy. He pulls me up and yanks me forward so I fall on top of him, straddling him. He guides himself into me and we both groan at the feeling of becoming one. He rubs my clit while I ride him, causing us to fall apart together.

“Okay,” he breathes, kissing my neck. “We should go.”

“We should,” I agree, getting up and letting out a little moan when he slips out of me.

He stays on the couch for another moment, watching me gather up our clothes while he catches his breath. “I still can’t believe you’re mine,” he says softly, looking at me with those gorgeous blue eyes. “I mean… I know you’re not mine, you’re your own person, but you’re my girlfriend and I’m just so damn happy about that. Sometimes I look at you and I’m struck all over again by how beautiful you are. How sweet. Smart. Funny. Caring. Amazing.”

“Stop it.” I throw his boxer shorts at his head. “My make-up is still relatively intact. I’d like to keep it that way. Don’t make me cry, Josh.”

He smiles and gets up to pull on his clothes. “You always get teary-eyed when I tell you how much I like you and pay you compliments. It’s cute, but it also makes me worry a little. Surely other guys have told you how amazing you are, right?”

I shrug. James did say sweet things, and Thomas too, but other than them… I’m not sure anyone has ever said the things Joshua tells me all the damn time. And certainly no one has looked at me quite like that, making me feel hot and cold at the same time, his eyes burning into my soul like he can see every single part of me and still likes what he’s looking at.

“Hey,” he whispers when he sees I’m getting teary-eyed again. “Don’t cry, baby. Give me a few months and I’ll have paid you so many compliments that you’re completely used to it. You’ll be all: yeah, I know I’m amazing and sexy and the cutest girl ever, what else is new?”

I laugh and kiss him softly before pulling away to put on my shoes and grab my purse. “I don’t think I’ll ever say anything quite so conceited, but I guess it’s nice to hear you say nice things about me. So… keep the compliments coming. We really should get going now. We’re already late.”

We rush out of his apartment and make our way to Aston’s and Annabel’s new house. It’s so weird that they live in this big-ass house with a white-picket fence, all grown-up and shit. Aston was the last out of all of my friends I thought would get married and have a kid, but with Annabel… Yeah, I get it. They’re perfect together.

“Hey!” Aston opens the door in nothing but sweatpants. “You’re late.”

I roll my eyes. “And you’re half-naked.”

“Anna threw up,” he says, wincing. “Apparently, our baby girl doesn’t like the smell of broccoli, and Anna’s stomach decided to empty itself on my shirt. So… we’re ordering pizza, I guess. Dinner is ruined. Sorry.”

“Pizza sounds great,” Joshua says as we follow Aston into the living room.

“Wow,” I breathe, looking around at the place. It’s huge. It hasn’t been completely decorated and there are a few boxes stashed in the corner, but other than that it looks pretty great. They’ve got good taste. “Aston, you’re living in a grown-up house,” I tell him, poking his side.

“I know, right!” He puts and arm around me and squeezes my shoulder. “I feel all adult and shit. I’ve got a house and a pregnant fiancé.” He laughs like he can’t quite believe it himself. “And I’m only 28!”

“You’re turning 29 in a few days,” I remind him. “Still… this place is amazing. And you live here.”

“Yeah,” he says, sighing happily. “My life is pretty fucking amazing.”
