Part 1
Why do I pay a cell phone bill every month? It's not like I actually use it. Social media doesn't really grab my attention anymore, it's nothing but a bunch of opinions on there anyway. All of my friends are busy, so it's not like I text anyone either. This is obviously a waste of money every month. What else would I even do with it?
*knock knock*
It's 9AM, who in the world is knocking on my door, especially this early in the morning? Granted, I'm awake, but that doesn't mean I want to be bothered…
"Yo T, wake up bro," a voice exclaimed from the opposite side of the door, "I'm heading out to get a haircut, you want some breakfast or anything?"
You could recognize that voice a mile away. It's my roommate Daryll, probably one of the most considerate guys you could ever meet. Great guy, always looks out for others (hence the thought of bringing back food for me). We've known each other since freshman year of high school, its been seven years and we're still cool. Still kinda wish he weren't banging on my door so loudly.
"TERIUS!" he screamed," TERIUS GRAY, DO YOU WANT FOOD?!"
I give up.
"The door's unlocked man, come on in," I calmly replied.
Daryll busted in the door like the linebacker he used to be back in high school, and began fussing at me to get up and "do something with my life."
"Come on bro," he said while brushing his hair, "you gotta get up and get into something, it's Saturday!"
I looked back at him in a comical disgust. To be honest, the only reason he's up for his haircut is because he couldn't find another time for it, and he and his girlfriend have big plans tonight.
"Don't you have a date to get ready for?" I chuckled at him.
He snickered before pausing to take a comb out of his pocket and groom his hair.
"Why are y'all so LOUD?!" another voice yelled from around the corner.
This would be my third roommate, Adrian. He's Daryll's old coworker and needed a place to stay as badly as we needed another person to help out with bills around here.
Adrian walked up to the door with a wash cloth and towel, presumably to get ready for a shower.
"All I want to do is get myself ready for tonight with Dominique, and you two fools wanna be all loud this early."
Daryll looked at him all confused.
"Are we not double dating?" He asked, "because I definitely remember telling Shanise that we're double dating."
Adrian shook his head in obvious disappointment.
Let me explain, Dominique and Shanise were dating two fools, respectively, and they made plans a few weeks ago for a double date to this nice fancy restaurant by the lake. I couldn't help but laugh, even I knew that those were still the plans.
"Yes, idiot," Adrian responded.
Darryl, now hilariously reassured, turned his attention back to me.
"See, you're laughing, but this SHOULD be a triple date," he reminded me, as he usually does, "still wondering why you're single bro…"
This is a conversation he's had with me several times. Let him tell it, I'm single because I choose to be. That may or may not be true, but I guess I don't really put myself out there. I haven't been in a relationship in three years. Granted we're all only 24, and I could be looking, but I guess I try not to worry about it.
Still, I'd be lying if I said I don't think about it from time to time. I just don't do anything, how do you even meet someone when you never really leave your house?
"Would you be open to meeting someone?" Adrian asked, "because I have an idea."
I gave him a look to show that the thought had caught my attention.
"Here, give me your phone," he commanded while taking it off my bed, "there's this new dating app, Orbit, it's only been around for a few months, but I heard it's good. I'm gonna download it on your phone. Make a profile and try it out, you may like what you find."
After putting the app on, he threw my phone back to me and wished me luck. They finally left to go get their day started as I looked over my phone. Now, dating apps are something I never thought of either, but maybe Adrian had a point. I still don't really do anything, and it's probably something to, at the very least, keep me occupied.
Why not? I'll make a profile. At least now I have a reason to actually feel alright paying my phone bill now…
