Chapter 69: That Night

I didn't see Laura anywhere so I assumed she was in her bedroom. The clubhouse was getting quiet as people started leaving. I went to my room and showered before going to bed. I tossed and turned and could not figure out what was wrong. Something is different. But I can't put my finger on it.

The next morning at breakfast I kept looking over at Laura's empty chair. Where was Laura? Why is she not eating with us. I stood up and rinsed my plate and put it in the dishwasher. I walked out and started my bike driving to the shop.

My shop is across the street from the beach. I glanced over and saw a woman sitting staring out at the water. From the back she looked like Laura but that is not possible. I walked into the shop and started getting my things ready.

I heard a man talking to one of the artists about a tiny woman he saw walking the beach last night. That little woman should not be doing that late at night. There are some homeless men sleeping on the beach.

I finished my work and headed back to the club. At supper time I again noticed her seat sat empty.

"Then one of the members asked me if I had a good time last night."

" What are you talking about?"

" You were making out with some woman and we thought you were going to throw her on the table and fuck her brains out."

Then I remembered seeing Laura watch me then turn and walk away.

"Grace, where is Laura?"

" She is not here."

" What do you mean she is not here a prospect asked?"

" She left last night."

" Where did she go."

" I can't tell you that."

" She asked me not to say where she is."

" She said it is best if the club members forget she existed."

"How are we going to do that Grace."

" Everytime we look at you we will see Laura."

" We have grown to like Laura."

" She can't just leave us."

" Look boys."

" Laura is in love with one of you members."

" But he doesn't give her the time of day."

" She thought it best to leave so she didn't make a fool of herself."

I saw the members looking at each other. Then they all looked at Ghost.

"Why are you looking at me?"

" I barely talked to her"

". But she did sleep in your bed for a few days until she could move around without much pain."

" So what. I didn't do anything with her."

"That is what Grace means."

" He never gave her the time of day."

" You are the only one who stayed away from her."

" The rest of us would talk to her and even listen to her read."

" You stayed away."

" It is you she loves."

" No, it is not me."

" Whatever you say Ghost."

I knew Laura would watch me when I was around. But, she never talked to me. Then I remembered her crying sometimes. Especially when I would talk to other women and flirt with them. I tired to stay away from her because I am five years older than she is.

It is for the best that she is not here anymore. But, I would find myself looking out the window for her setting on the swing but she is not there. I see Laura everywhere. I even started smelling her perfume and turn to look for her only to find a whore standing there.

I don't want to admit it but I have fallen in love with Laura. So, I deny it. I don't talk about her. And as the months go by and I see Grace's baby growing inside her I think of Laura. I heard that Grace is having a baby shower but it is not being held here. She is having it at her old house.

We still don't know where Laura is. One day I stopped at Bob Evans for supper. I saw Laura working there. She is a waitress. I noticed she has lost weight that can't afford to lose.

I saw Ghost come and be seated.

"I asked another waitress to wait on him."

" Why she asked."

" I know him and I don't want to talk to him."

" He is the man you are in love with isn't he?"

" Yes, but he doesn't see me that way."

" Please take that table."

" Alright, I will wait one him for you."

" Thank you."

I watched as Peggy waited on Ghost. It hurt to see him smile at her. He never smiled at me. He always glared at me. I looked at the clock and started doing my clean up duties before clocking out. I walked out the back door and got into my little car and drove home.

I held it together until I got inside the house and placed my meal on the counter. I then slid down on the floor and let the tears flow. I miss him. I miss watching him. But I know he dos not care about me. I saw him kissing that woman. That hurt. I thought my heart was breaking in half.

I cried myself to sleep and lay on the carpet. I woke up and sat up and leaned against the counter. I stood up and put my meal in the refrigerator. I was off work for the next two days. I just lay in bed. I didn't eat anything. I was not hungry.

I talked to Grace when she called.

"I told her I was fine."

" She reminded me she was having the baby shower next week."

" She stated that after the shower that Blade was coming to put the gifts in his truck."

" But if anyone comes with him I should run upstairs and lock the bedroom door."

"Have you been eating Laura?"

" Yes, I have been eating."

" What have you eaten today."

" I don't remember. A sandwich."

" You better be eating Laura."

" I am."

" Don't worry about me Grace."

" But, I do."

" Well don't."
