Chapter 10

I woke up to the sound of someone knocking my door.

I groaned and looked at the clock. It's still two.

I got up unwillingly to open the door and saw it was Nova on the other side, in just her tank top and shorts.

"Hi." She said, smiling nervously.

"Hey." I replied, my voice still husky from sleeping.

Before I could say another word, she walked past me to the bed and lied down.

Um... what just happened?

Is this a dream?

I turned and looked towards the door and then back at her.

I rubbed my eyes and repeated the same.

Okay... definitely not a dream!

During my investigation of dream/reality, Nova got up in a sitting position and asked me, "Coming to bed?"

Top three words, I never imagined she would say.

Nodding, I slowly walked towards the bed and lied down next to her. I wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her close, so that her back was against my chest.

"Night, Ace." She whispered.

"Good night, Brownie!" I whispered back and kissed the back of her head.

I sighed and closed my eyes.

"It's not my fault, you were hugging me and you were all warm and soft like my bed." Her voice from last night in the car echoed in my mind and I smiled to myself.

Damn! I'm turning into a girl!

I woke up to find something warm and small on top of my chest. I opened my eyes to see a pair of blue eyes staring back at me.

Wait! Blue eyes?

I turned my head around to find my favourite pair of brown eyes, looking at me smiling. I looked back at the one on my chest to notice, it was a small baby with blue eyes and black hair and her fingers were in her mouth as she was sucking them.

Is this my baby?

Are we married?

I didn't remembered any of that.

Nova got up from beside me and held the baby in her hands and started cooing at her. I looked at the baby once again.

I have definitely seen the baby before.

A pillow landed on my face interrupting my thoughts. I looked at at the person who threw the pillow and did a face-palm.

Damn, I felt like I'm suffering from a memory loss!

I couldn't even remember my own niece!

That's right. My niece.

Which means the person who threw the pillow at me was obviously - my sister Sam.

I quickly got up and walked up to her and kissed her cheek. She laughed, "Morning, lazy bones!"

"Hey, brat!" I said to her.

"What are you doing here? Where's Jake?" I asked her - Jake, being her husband.

"What? Can't a sister come and see her adorable big brother?" She said dramatically.

Sometimes, I thought she and Ryan were siblings instead. "And Jake's in the living room."

"Two things. One: Stop calling me adorable." I grumbled making Nova laugh "I swear to God, you both are trying to turn me into a girl. And two: What are you really doing here?" I narrowed my eyes, hands on my hips and looked suspiciously at her.

She exhaled in frustration and said, "Okay, okay... ever since Lay was born, Jake and I haven't had a time to ourselves. So now, she's exactly five months old, so can you please please please take care of her for just one day? Please, S. Please." She looked at me pleadingly.

I looked back at Nova and raised my eyebrows, she smiled in return.

I sighed, "Okay, I guess..."

"Thank you, thank you so much!" She hugged me tightly and walked over to Nova and kissed the baby's head.

I walked towards them, "Brownie, this is my baby sister Samantha and my niece Layla and Sam, this is Novella." I said, introducing them.

"We already know, smarty pants." Sam said to me. "We got to know each other when you were supposedly in your dreamland..." She said in a singsong voice.

"Why do you have to make everything sound girly?" I asked her annoyingly.

She just laughed. Nova handed the baby to Sam, "I have to... um... washroom. See ya in a minute." and ran off.

Sam looked at me, "So... Brownie, huh?"

"What? We're just friends." I said to her.

"So why did I find her coming out of your room in the morning?" She asked suspiciously.

I sighed, "Nightmares, Sam. We both have nightmares and sleeping together helps." I sat down on my bed.

She sat beside me, "You still have those nightmares? It's in the past, S. You have to let go. You are not like him."

"We share the same genes, Sam. If he can be such a monster, why can't I?"

"Because you're not him. You're not our father, S. He was mean, old, son of a--" She took a deep breath and continued, "You are my bro, S. You're funny, lovable, cute. Complete opposite of him! Why can't you see that? I get that our past was shit. But look, I got Jake. And I love him with all my heart. And he and now Layla are the reason, I don't even think of what that piece-of-shit father did to us. Someday, you'll find that person, who'll make you wanna live in your present and forget bout your past. You just gotta, open yourself to that possibility and let that person in. You-" She got interrupted when Nova walked back into the room.

Nova cringed, "Bad timing? Should I just go?"

Before I could answer, Sam said, "No, no... of course not! I was just leaving!" She handed me the baby and started to walk away.

I quickly took a pillow in my hand and threw it at her. It bounced right off the back of her head.

She turned around and glared at me.

I just shrugged and said, "Payback's a bitter gourd!"

"Bitter gourd?" Sam asked me.

Shit! I looked at Nova to see her throwing daggers at me through her eyes. I looked back with a apologetic expression on my face.

Her face softened a little and I smiled at her.

I looked around to see Sam staring at us both. She smiled at Nova, "Never mind. I would love to hear bout it the next time. See you later."

She looked at me and smiled with the motherly expression on her face, "Think bout what I said, S!" and left the room.

We all walked together to the living room to see Jake sitting on the couch. We both greeted each other and he thanked me for taking care of the baby, who was fast asleep with her head on my shoulder.

We said our goodbyes and walked them to the door.

After they left, Nova walked up to me and gently took the baby from my hands and walked over to sit on the couch, holding the baby and started rubbing her back gently.

"How in the hell did you get up without me noticing?"

She looked at me and smiled, "I have my own secret skills, Ace!"

So she did.
