Chapter 39

There was only three days left until Christmas Eve and the Christmas Formal. Layla was so busy making sure everything was going off without a hitch she realized she hadn't gone shopping for a dress yet. She walked into Jace's office in a small panic, clutching her purse and her car keys, "Hey! I just realized I don't have a dress for the party! I'll be back in a little bit." She leaned up and kissed him on the cheek and turned to leave but stopped when Jace spoke.

"I already took care of that," Jace said, looking down at the papers on his desk.

Layla turned back to face Jace, her eyes narrowed as she took in what he had said. "What do you mean you took care of it?"

Jace shoved his hands in his pockets and smiled, "Go see for yourself."

Layla gave a curious smile before jogging upstairs. She walked into their room but didn't see anything. She hummed, intrigued on where he would have hidden it.

"The closet.." she whispered before walking in. It wasn't in there either.

Layla walked out of the closet confused and gave Jace a face when he chuckled at her and pointed to the large box on the coffee table.

Layla smiled before sitting in one of the chairs and pulled on the satin bow. It came undone and she lifted the lid to find the most beautiful dress. "Jace..." Layla gasped quietly.

"You like it?" Jace asked shyly.

Layla pulled the gown out of the box to get a better look at it, "Jace its absolutely stunning." She took in the dress he had bought. It was a glittering gold, strapless gown.

Jace smiled, proud of his choice. "I hoped you would like it. When I saw it I thought of you. It reminded me of the dress you wore to the party we had on my eighteenth birthday. It was the first time I really saw how beautiful you are."

Layla smiled at the thought that he had noticed. "Thank you," Layla set the dress down and walked to Jace, wrapping her arms around his neck. She leaned up and kissed him softly before deepening her kiss, her body close to his. Jace wrapped his arms tightly around her waist. She rubbed against him and he hummed before pulling away slightly, "I won't be able to behave myself if you keep that up."

Layla smiled into her kiss, "I don't have any problem with that." She began to slowly undo the buttons on Jace's shirt, his skin catching fire every time her fingers brushed against his chest.

Jace smirked before lifting her shirt above her head and walking her to the bed. They'd had plenty of heavy make-out sessions, but nothing farther. Jace had been slowing himself but now, with Layla so responsive, he was losing control. He could smell her arousal and he was sure she could feel his.

Jace's lips traveled to Layla's neck, nipping and sucking the sweet spot above her collarbone where his mark would be. He wanted it to be there now but he didn't know if they would go as far as he wanted to. Layla seemed to read his mind and her hand moved south toward his hardness. He inhaled sharply when he felt her warm touch and it undid him. He tore off the rest of their clothes, touching her soft curves which released a quiet moan from her lips. Layla ran her hands across his strong chest and down his hard arms, her skin ignited as she felt him above her. Jace teased her with his tip, making her want more. When he slowly pressed in she gasped, not used to his size. His space slowly quickened, making Layla moan as the pleasure built. They released and as Jace did he finally bit down on that spot he had been wanting to mark for so long. Layla flinched for a moment at the pain, but it was quickly replaced with warmth.

They laid together in the bed, holding each other close. Jace kissed the top of her head, "So the dress is a winner then huh?"

Layla laughed as she pushed him away, "You suck! Way to ruin the moment!"

Jace laughed as he defended from her shoves. He grabbed her hands and pulled her close to him, "My mate," he whispered.

Layla smiled up at Jace then laid her head on his chest, "Jace?"

"Hmm?" Jace responded.

"Do you think we'll ever find Hunter?" Layla questioned.

"Honestly I don't know. I hope so. I don't want what happened to Ryann to happen to you. I don't want our family to feel trapped here because the threat of Hunter hurting them makes it so they can't leave the house," Jace replied. Layla could see he was really struggling with this.

"Well you don't need to worry. I can take care of myself," Layla smiled.

Jace faced Layla and cupped her face in his hands, "I know you can," Jace replied, kissing her forehead, " I still don't want you wandering off by yourself."

Layla nodded lightly, "Okay. I won't go anywhere."

Jace let out a long exhale before relaxing again, "Thank you, that makes me feel so much better."

After lying together for a long time they finally made their way out of bed and back downstairs. Jace took Layla's hand as they walked into the kitchen, unable to wipe the giant smile off his face. He finally felt like himself again, the Jace he was before Ryann died.

It was an uncharacteristically warm evening and they had all decided to carry a few tables outside and have the pack meal in the backyard. The evening air was filled with talking and laughing and random pups running around in the grass. Layla and Jace sat beside each other and Jace rested his hand on her knee. The joyous atmosphere of dinner made it so they didn't notice a shadow lurking far in the trees.
