Chapter 8- Better Run

“Pleasure of love lasts but a moment. Pain of love lasts a lifetime.” - Bette Davis

Jax and I spent the rest of Saturday night texting. He wanted me to come over to his house on Sunday to make lunch. My mom wasn’t going to be home tomorrow and I hate being alone. I told him to pick me up at 10.

I tossed and turned all night. The red eye wolf was in my nightmares again. I heard my brothers and my screams mix in and out. I woke up shaking and sweaty. My reflection in the mirror told the journey of a sleepless night. Even Jax knew something was wrong when he picked me up.

“Are you okay Kitten?” He sounded really concerned.

“I’m fine, I just couldn’t sleep well,” I tried to play it off. Jax wasn’t buying it.

“Call or text me next time it happens again. I don’t care what time it is. We can talk till you fall asleep again.”

I was dozing until I saw where Jax was driving to.

“Uhhh why are we heading towards Howling Cliffs?” Howling Cliffs was private land, always have been. No one in town knew who the owners were. Well some did but they never said. Howling Cliffs got it's name because of the number of wolves seen in the area. No local tried to trespass, it was just not worth the risk of rabies.

"This is the land that my family acquired.” He looked nervous, he kept glancing around. Jax pulled into a new driveway, leading up to a giant wooden mansion. There were two others behind it but the driveway didn’t connect to those. Jax pulled up towards the steps.

“You must have a big family,” I said stepping out of the car.

He laughs, “Something like that.”

He led me into the house. It had this rustic feel towards it. If I’m going to be honest I felt like I was walking into a hotel. The kitchen wasn’t any better. New appliances lined the walls. There were at least two of each appliance.

“Are you a hotel or something? Cause there is definitely no way this all for just for one family.”

“No, we have a lot of extended family that visit all the time and my uncle and my aunt’s families live with us too.” Jax shrugged, acting all nonchalant.

“That makes way more sense.” I felt dumb for even considering a hotel.

“Don’t worry I get this all the time,” he laughs and pokes my side.

“So I think we should make a quiche.” I’ve been craving a good quiche for a while now. But I never have the other set of hands to help.

“What’s a quiche?” He sounded genuinely confused.

“You don’t know what a quiche is? Uncultured swine,” I poked his side like he did to me. This ended up in a big poking fight. I called uncle but let him know that this fight is not over.

“Anyways a quiche is like a breakfast pie. You can make it with pie crust or without. I do not feel like messing with pie crust so it will be without it. It has eggs and all sort of veggies. Do you have bacon?” Jax nods as he gets out the ingredients and sets it on the counter.

“Good we’ll need that,” I scan the pots and pans hanging down above the stove. I finally found the perfect quiche pan.

We got straight to work cause it took over an hour to cook. I had him cutting the veggies and sauteing them while I worked on the bacon.

“I should get the biggest slice since I’m doing all the work.” I roll my eyes. All he’s doing is cooking vegetables.

“Nope I do because the bacon grease is popping at me,” I stick my tongue at him.

After we everything was chopped in and thrown into the quiche dish, we headed to Jax room.

“Our cook will let me know when it’s down,” Jax said after I said we should probably stay closer to the ovens.

Jax hops onto his be and pulls me with him. I end up on his lap.

He buries his face in my hair. "Why does my Kitten always smell so good?”

Trying to ignore how he said his Kitten. "Because I have access to a shower you heathen,” I retorted.

“It’s not just the shower, you always smell like vanilla and cotton candy. I think some sort of flower. It’s so intoxicating.”

He kissed me before I could reply to him. This one wasn’t like last night all rushed. It was slow and lazy, like he was trying to explore how my lips moved. His tongue darted into my mouth. I tried to match his rhythm. Jax’s hands slowly moved up and down my body. When we pulled away his lips were pink and shiny. He was going to kiss me again but I had a better idea. I tickled his neck because that was the most common spot.

“So you want to be play kitten?” His eyes shone playfully. “I’ll give you to the count of three to run and try to hide.”

“One....” I stayed put,

“Two.... You should be running Kitten.”

I jumped out of his lap and ran like a hare. I heard him call out three. I slipped and slid down the stairs. I was trying to hide in the kitchen. Just as I entered the living room, a strong pair of arms grabbed my waist.

“Gotcha Kitten,” Jax whispered in my ear, sending shivers down my spine.

“What are you going to do with me now?” I asked innocently.

"Don’t worry about it Kitten. You’ll love it,” his voice got huskier.

“I am kinda of worried abo-”

“Ahem. What do we have here?”

Uh ohhh someone got caught. E
