Leo hears something. Danny just got moved into Chris’s car to be transported to the clinic, when Leo hears something coming from the direction of Elianne’s house. ‘Chris,’ he links his brother.
The tall Alpha sighs. I’m right here, why do you need to link me.’
‘Did you hear that?’
‘Did you hear that noise? I think it’s coming from the little Harris-cabin.’
‘Seriously, now you’re just looking for an excuse to visit her.’
The sound of a snarling wolf is heard, then branches are being crushed as if someone is being thrown into them. A wolf yelps in pain.
‘I am most definitely not making excuses. I was right.’ While he is linking, he shifts into his wolf and speeds off.
‘Leo, wait, you can’t just go in without backup.’
But Leo doesn’t listen, he is off, to see what’s happening at the little cabin.
When he arrives at the front of the little cabin, he sees the rogue laying at the treeline on some bushes.
Elianne’s wolf is standing tall and fiercely right in front of the front door. Her hair straight up, her tail low and her teeth bare, with saliva dripping down. This is the first time that they are in their wolf forms at the same time. At training one of them always was in their human form, they never had the chance to be in their wolf forms.
Before Leo can get closer to the rogue, the rogue quickly gets up from his spot and heads off into the woods. He has a bleeding wound on his neck from when Leo defended Danny, but now he has a scar at his flanks as well.
Leo’s wolf walks over to where Elianne is standing. She doesn’t recognise him at first and snarls at him, she’s still in combat-mode, so Leo quickly shifts to show her he is no threat.
“Are you okay?” He asks.
Elianne shifts too, now standing in front of him, lightly panting. “Yeah, I’m fine. I heard some noise outside, so I went out to check the treeline when I came across that rogue. He tried to come closer, but as you saw I defended myself.”
“You did well,” Leo smiles, “You did better than your eldest brother did.”
Elianne jerks her head up to see him in the eyes, concern evidently in her eyes. “Danny? Is he alright?”
“He was hurt badly, the rogue bit him in the neck. He will have to stay a while at the clinic to properly heal, but I think he’ll live. He has Beta-traits after all, he’ll be back on his feet in no time.”
She sighs, she is reassured a little. She looks at him inquisitively. “Are you alright?” She asks.
“I am.” He smiles. “I’ll get going, see if there’s anything I can help at the Packhouse. I’ll see you around.”
She nods. He quickly turns around, shifts into his wolf, and takes off. Fighting the urge to take Elianne in his arms and kiss her.
Leo decides to pay Danny a visit at the clinic. He feels guilty for the harm that had been done to Danny. If he had had just a bit more control over his wolf, this all wouldn’t have happened, because then he would’ve prevented his wolf from walking away from Danny. Apparently, his wolf finds his mate way more important than the Beta of his pack.
He knocks on the door of his room and opens the door quietly.
“You!” Danny sits up and points his finger at Leo, but winches in pain as he does so. A bit calmer, he continues; “I have a bone to pick with you.!”
When Leo enters the room fully and shuts the door behind him, he sees Danny’s mate Ava is also there.
He nods to her. “Hey, Leo.” She greets him.
He walks over to the bed and takes a seat on a chair next to it.
“I still have a bone to pick with you,” Danny says with a dark look in his eyes. “First, you kiss my sister, my underaged sister, for god’s sake! And then when we’re in pursuit of one of the most dangerous rogues, you just walk off and leave me to be fed to the beast! You’re a coward! You’re a dick! I don’t want to see you anywhere near my sister!”
“Danny,” Ava scoots closer to his bed from the other side. “Take it easy, you will tear open your wound again!”
Danny looks at her angrily. “Ava don’t interfere! I am talking to this dickhead that didn’t have my back last night. Because of him, I’m lying here.”
“You’re lucky I am in no condition to do so, otherwise I would’ve kicked your ass right now!”
“Danny, I’m truly sorry for what happened, I-”
“No! I don’t want to hear it!” Danny is furious. “I’m going to have a chat with Chris about your capability to lead the warriors. When you have no control over your wolf, you’re a danger not only to yourself, but also to our whole pack. You’re like some crazy-in-love-teen, not a full-grown man, let alone that worth to be named the Captain!”
“No! Get out!”
Leo looks down and shakes his head.
“Didn’t you hear me? I said get out!”
Leo turns around and leaves with a heavy heart. The words Danny threw at him hurt, a lot.
It’s late in the afternoon, when Leo walks into Chris’s office, almost too scared to face him right now. “Hey Chris, you wanted to see me?”
Chris looks up. “Err, yeah, come in, close the door. Let me finish this quickly.”
Leo takes a seat on the sofa that is placed against one wall. He looks at his brother and can clearly see the bags under his eyes. When he looks even better, he sees the tousled hair and his pale skin. “Are you feeling alright? Did you even get a little bit of sleep last night?” Leo is worried.
Chris shakes his head, gets up from his chair and sits down in the armchair next to the sofa. “No, I don’t have time. I have already called the authorities about our green-eyed friend. That took me a while to get the right person on the phone. They are going to investigate it and will let me know when they’ve got results. Then I called the insurance company and they’ve been here the whole afternoon to document everything and take pictures. So now we have to wait for their reports to be made. And then I’ve helped some families to recover any things that were still usable and things like pictures and stuff.” Chris rubs his face and sighs. “God, I’m tired. I’ve been going all night and all day.”
“Is there anything I can help you with?”
“Yes, you can! You can make me worry less about you by keeping your wolf reigned in!” Chris points with his finger at Leo. “Dang it, Leo, I never expected this from you!”
“Chris, I’m sorry, I-”
“Stop. You don’t need to apologise. I know how hard it is to reign your wolf in when it comes to mates. It’s just that you’re one of our best and you’re way too important for us. We can’t have your wolf freak out like that, especially with the green-eyed rogue being back.”
“Danny isn’t too pleased with me right now.”
“Give him some time, he is in a lot of pain. Pain can make even the nicest wolf snap. He’ll come around eventually. And if not, I’ll have a chat with him. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.” Chris sighs again.
“You need to sleep.”
“I don’t think I will be able to. I’ve got too many things on my mind right now. Those poor families just saw just their whole lives go up in flames, everything they’ve worked so hard for, everything they lived for was in there.” Chris shakes his head. “I just don’t get why someone would do such a thing to another person. I just can’t understand.”
“You need to sleep, Chris, otherwise I’m going to get Adina and ask her to sedate you. We can’t have a sleep-deprived Alpha. We need an Alpha that is thinking clearly. And I need you to help me with my mate-situation.”
Chris nods and gets up from his seat. “I know. I’m going to take a nap before dinner. I hope I’ll be able to get some sleep.”
