Chapter 9

Kendra woke up whimpering and crying. She was hurting so badly and felt like she was going to throw up too.

She slowly struggled to get out of bed. She was so weak it was hard to stand, so she had to crawl to the bathroom. Once there, she threw up everything she had eaten last night before almost passing out on the floor.

When she began to shake with cold, she knew she had to make it back to bed somehow. So, she pulled herself up onto her knees once more and crawled back into the bedroom. As she passed by the desk, she reached up and grabbed her cellphone which lay by her purse. She made it to the bed but had no energy to get back on it, so she just pulled the blanket down onto the floor and bundled up.

Thinking she should call someone because this wasn’t like any flu she had ever had, she unlocked her phone. Her finger shook as she hovered over Kimmy’s number, but she hesitated.

What if it is just the flu and I scare my sister for nothing?

Giving a shaky sigh, she lightly shook her head. “Oh Kendra, be honest with yourself. You want that hunky vampire by your side, cuddling you and making it all better. Yeah,” she snorted, “after the things he said to you the other night, do you really think that is going to happen?”

She knew it wouldn’t.

It didn’t stop the need she felt for him to her soul. A need she didn’t understand because they were practically strangers!

She started to softly cry then as the pain in her body once more peaked.

“It hu-hurts so ba-bad! I ju-just want him! I don’t kn-know why!” She wailed as she continued to cry from the pain.

After laying there for a long time, shivering and longing for her angel with her very being, she made her decision. So, lifting her phone in a shaking hand, she found his number. Kimberly had given all the brothers’ numbers, but finding him, she hit the call button.

“What!” Tobias hissed into the phone. Probably from being woken up a three o’clock in the morning.

“To-Tobias, it’s me, Ke-Kendra. I-I know I pr-probably shouldn’t have called y-yo-ou, but I need someone to stay with m-me. I’m s-so sick, h-hurt so b-bad, and I’m so c-cold,” she whispered.

There was nothing but silence.

“To-Tobias?” She whimpered.

“You’re right, you shouldn’t have called me. You should have called your sister.”

“I just d-didn’t want to w-worry her,” she whispered. Then, with a sob, she hung up.

She decided right then and there he genuinely didn’t care anything for her. Her heart was broken, and she began to sob once more. Wrapping herself in her blanket she cried herself back to sleep. She was awakened up by a knocking on her door. Prying her eyes open she groaned as the pain once more hit her full force.

Someone knocked again and this time she heard voices.

“Are you sure this is her room?”

“Yes sir, this is the one we have her down as being in.”

“I didn’t see her car. Maybe she left.”

“I’m sure I saw her come in earlier. I don’t think she was feeling too well though.”

“Oh, and why do you say that?”

“The gentleman that was with her looked as if he was practically carrying her. Although, he didn’t stay with her for more than a few moments.”

“Well, let us in and we’ll take it from here.”

“Yes, sir.”

She heard a key turn in the lock, and then a man’s footsteps.

“Kendra!” A man exclaimed as a shadow fell over her where she lay on the floor.

She squinted up. “Leo?”

“Yes Kendra, it’s me. Let’s get you back on the bed,” he murmured. “How are you feeling?”

“I hurt so bad Leo. It’s like someone tried to rip my body limb from limb. My eyes hurt, my head hurts, and… and I think I’m gonna throw up now!”

Leo reached down to help her, grabbing hold of her shoulders to sit her up. Feeling the burning sensation on her skin had her screaming.

“What’s wrong?” Leo fretted, quickly letting her go. “Did I hurt you?”

“Touch… it hurts Leo!”

Leo stiffened, his face going blank before he asked, “Kendra honey, what do you mean by touch hurts?”

Kendra whimpered, thinking he was mad at her. “I-I don’t know. J-Jarod tried to pick me up in the alley and his touch hurt, so did yours. It feels like a fire burning my skin,” she told him as she once more whimpered, scared now. “I-Is there something bad wrong with me Leo, am I d-dying?”

“Maybe you should try picking her up,” Leo suggested as he glanced over his shoulder. “First tell me, did you bite her?”

Oh, I would know that voice anywhere. Tobias is here.

“Well, you’re the only other one that I know of that has come into contact with her since she’s been here this time,” Leo said. “Well, except for the one she was hunting, so it has to be you.”

“Maybe it is the vampire she’s been hunting,” Tobias hissed.

Leo turned back to her. “Kendra, have you found the vampire you came to town to destroy ?”

“Yeah, earlier,” she told him. “It was rough work, feeling like I do.”

“If it had been him it would have stopped with his death because she’s human,” Leo turned to tell Tobias. “Now it’s back to you.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about. You’ve let Mutter and her matchmaking take over your mind,” Tobias hissed. “I don’t need this, I’m out of here.”

Suddenly Leo was gone from her side, and he had Tobias by the arm twisting it. They were both red-eyed, their fangs shining, their faces morphed into that of their vampire.

“You listen to me well, Bruder,” Leo hissed, “She might be your Geliebte, beloved, and you will treat her as such if it is proven. If she can’t abide your touch either, then we will call Mutter for her help. For now, you will sit your butt down over there in that chair and if she can abide your touch, you will hold her until she feels better!”

Tobias hissed as he twisted this way and that, trying to get loose and failing. “Nein, I will not! This isn’t right and you can’t force me!”

Ja, I can, and I will,” Leo told him in a cold tone.
