Chapter 1

Amara Kent

“Are you ready for your big day?” Aunt Chantel asked.

“I mean I guess.”

“What do you mean you guess? It’s your first day of senior year Monkey!”

Monkey is a nickname I developed over the years, mainly because I was a very energetic kid. I’ve always been a spirited child, or for a simpler definition; I had a very active imagination, attitude, you know, the whole lot of it.

“I am excited. Kind of nervous actually.”

It was true, i’m the ‘new kid’. Who knows what’s going to happen to me today.

“Well i’m sure you’ll do just fine.” She said placing her hand on mine.

Aunt Chantel has always been like a mom to me, she basically was my mom growing up. My dad couldn’t handle me as a child so he called in his trusty side kick, his hero, his sister-in-law. My dad and Chantel’s husband, Elijah are brothers. Somehow she always was the one who calmed me down, helped me understand what happened with my Mom, helped with when I got my first period, my first boyfriend, my first heartbreak. She helped me through it all. And I will forever be grateful.

“Alright, were here. Marcus had an early practice so he’ll hopefully be done by now and can show you around.” She said smiling at me.

“Good luck, I love you.” She added giving me a hug.

“Love you too.” I said before getting out of the car and looking at the piece of paper that had my locker number, combo and my schedule on it.

I walked up the huge corridor looking for locker 1572 hall B. This school was huge, it was like a maze. I kept walking with my eyes everywhere accept for in front of me. And then it happened. We collided and I fell. Way to make a first impression Amara. I looked up to see whom it was I had run into, and my blue eyes met a pair of green ones. A beautiful set of green eyes and sent a shiver down my spine. He stood tall, six feet would be my guess. He had beautiful chocolate brown hair that was styled very neatly but still looked like he just ran his fingers through his hair.

“I’m so sorry, I should really watch where i’m going this place is like a maze.” I apologized while getting up.

He just looked me up and down, Oh my god. Was he checking me out?

“You must be new.” His low, raspy British accent made me freeze.

“Which means you don’t know the rules.” He said walking around me. There was a group of them, three of them to be exact.

“W-What rules?” I asked quietly.

The halls were almost empty, accept for the strays that were late for class, just like me.

“Rule number 1. Don’t speak to me unless I speak to you first. Rule number 2. Don’t talk back. And rule number 3. don’t get in my way.” He says eyeing me.

“Now since you’re new here i’ll give you a second chance, but if you do it again.” He said coming close to my face, I had taken a few steps back and I felt my back hit the lockers.

“It won’t end well for you.” He said with a low whisper.

“Do you understand?” He said before looking at my paper with my name on it.

The way my name rolled off his tongue made the hair on the back of my neck stand. If i’m being honest this guy scared me. Like really scared me. He and his little gang stepped closer.

“I said, do. You. Understand?”

I could smell his cologne and minty breath he was so close.

“I understand.” I said just above a whisper.

He looked me up and down once more before leaving. I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. Way to go, first day and you already have people who hate you. I continue down the hall and eventually find my locker.

I found my class and slowly tried to creep in. But unfortunately, I wasn’t quiet enough.

“Oh why hello.” A sweet voice said. “You must be Amara?” She asked. I nodded.

“Class, we have a new student here today and I’d like you to be extra nice to her. So, tells us something about yourself.” She said before resting against her desk top.

“Um, my name is Amara Kent. I’m from New York I just moved here over the summer. But i’ve been coming here since I was a kid.”

“Well, Welcome. Have a seat right over there,” She said pointing to a seat next to a boy wearing a black T-shirt and black leather jacket. I quickly went and took my seat.

“So Brooklyn. What brings you here?”

He had warm brown eyes and brown hair, it was long but not too long. It was like a perfect head of hair.

“Firstly I’m not from Brooklyn, upstate New York. Secondly this thing called school.” I said sarcastically.

“Eh same thing.” He said. “I’m Dalton SaintClair.” He said taking his hand out to shake mine, I hesitated before taking his hand

“So you’re a Kent huh?”

“Is there something wrong with my last name?”

“No, not at all.”

“You wouldn’t happen to be related to Marcus Kent would you?” He asked.

“You know my cousin?” I asked him.

“Eh, we hangout a little.” He said before leaning back in his chair.

I didn’t think Marcus would like me asking questions so I stayed quiet for the duration of the class.

When the bell rang, signifying it was second period I was relieved because it was Personal Fitness. One of my favourite classes. I loved working out and just being active. It kept my mind occupied. I walked into the girls change room once I found it and quickly got changed into a pair of Adidas shorts and a plain white T-shirt. Which thankfully wasn’t see-threw. I put my hair up into a ponytail and walked into the workout room. There was a small group of girls, they all looked like super models. I guess that’s what happens when you live in California.

“You must be new! Hi i’m Saige Miller.” A blonde girl said.

She had blonde hair and piercing brown eyes. She had perfect sun kissed skin and she looked perfect.

“Amara Kent,” I said shaking her hand.

“If you want you can come join us, and possibly hangout at lunch?”

“Um sure, yeah sounds great.”

She led me over to a small group of girls, one had black hair that went to her shoulders and light green eyes, and the other girl had long red hair and dark green eyes. They all were stunning.

“Hi, i’m Ingrid Piper.” The red head said.

“Jade Green.” The other one said.

“So Amara, tell us something about yourself.” Saige said.

“Um, I moved here from New York, I live with my aunt and uncle. There’s not really much to me.”

“New York? I love New York.” Jade said smiling.

We talked and got to know each other for the rest of the period that followed into lunch. They showed me around school and where my other two classes are. They were really sweet girls. I sat down outside at a picnic table under the sun with a beautiful oak tree that would lightly shade us whilst they went to grab their food.

“There you are.” I hear a masculine voice say. I turn and see Marcus.

“Here I am.” I smiled as he sat down beside me. He was wearing a blue t-shirt and a black leather jacket.

“What’s with the jacket? it’s like 100 degrees outside.”

“Issa look.”

“So have you made any friends yet?” He asked me.

“Yes actually I have.”

“Oh, who are the poor souls?” He asked me. I nudged his side playfully,

“I’m kidding i’m kidding.”

Saige, Jade and Ingrid had soon joined us.

“Why hello.” Saige said to me.

“Marcus this is Saige, Ingrid and Jade.” I said introducing them.

“Hi.” He said to Saige with quiet the seductive tone.

“Hi.” She replied breathlessly. I shook off the thought.

We all talked for a little bit before Marcus’ phone rang.

“Hello?, I’m with my cousin. What? really? Okay i’ll be there soon.” He said before hanging up.

“Everything alright?” I asked as he stood up.

“Everything is fine, i’ll see you at home Bug.” He said before kissing the top of my head.

“Okay?” I said confused. Where could he be going?

“You didn’t tell me Marcus was your cousin.” Saige looked at me with wide eyes.

“You didn’t ask.”

“I’ve had a crush on him since the sixth grade.” She said placing her hand on her head.

“Oh sweetheart, why would you do that to yourself.” I made a face, she laughed.

“We used to be really close. Until he started hangout with a different crowd.”

“Well i’m sure he’s still the same person you knew back then. He seems to be the same anyways.”

“So, how was school?” My uncle Elijah asked.

“Pretty good. I made new friends.”

It was just me, Dahlia and Elijah for dinner tonight. Marcus said he had plans and then left without another word.

“That’s great sweetheart.” She said. I smiled.

“I think i’m going to go take a shower.” I said excusing myself from the table. I go upstairs to take a long, hot shower.

I was laying in bed, playing games on my phone and texting the group chat I was added into today by Saige. They were quiet funny if i’m being honest. We talked a whole night away and eventually I ended up falling asleep.
