Chapter 1

Present Day (December 2020)
I was packing my sons lunchbox into his backpack when I yelled for my son. "Jaxon, put your shoes on, the bus will be here in five minutes."
"Okay Mom." As he comes running down the stairs towards the front door.
After he put his last shoe on, he yells "Mom! The bus is here!"
"Wait! Don't forget your bookbag" As I got through the front door and out into the front yard I saw a face that I never thought I would see again. At least i was hoping i'd never see him again. He was leaning against his car that was parked on the street. He had his hands in his pockets, looking the same as he always had, tall, with dark hair and the most gorgeous blue eyes.
I was brought back to reality when Jaxon started pulling on his backpack.
"Have a good day Jax. I'll be here when you get off of the bus. I love you"
"I love you too Mom." Jaxon responded.
I watched as Jaxon got on the bus and tried to mentally prepare myself for the reunion that was about to happen.

16 Years Old (April 2013)
As we were silently walking to our next period class Jamie spoke up. " Did you hear that a new kid is supposed to be starting today?"
"No, I hadn't heard" I replied
"Someone told me that he was 6'2, with dark hair and blue eyes"
"I'll believe that when I see it."
Reaching our Geometry class our conversation was dropped as we found our seats on opposite sides of the room. I guess our teachers figured out that the only way to stop us from talking in class is to separate us. A few minutes later, the most handsome guy I have ever seen walked through the door. Sure enough he was 6'2 with dark hair and blue eyes. I thought I'd melt when he took the empty seat to my right.
Next thing I know my phone is vibrating in my pocket, it was Jamie.
*You lucky bitch!*
*Wanna trade seats?* I fire back, knowing that she wouldn't trade with me.
*Absolutely not. You're going to stay there and you will fall in love with him and leave that piece of shit boyfriend you have now.*
*How romantic.* She replied adding an eye rolling emoji for extra effect.
The new kid turns in his seat after getting settled and says "Good morning, my name is Derek, it's nice to meet you."
"My name is Scarlett. Where are you from?"
"Just a few towns over, my parents split and I moved here with my dad."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that."
Right then the teacher comes in and starts class up. After the bell rings, I start to pack up my books when Derek interrupts. "Will you help me find my next class?"
"Yeah sure what teacher do you have?"
"Mr. Gerald's English class?"
"That is where I'm headed too, we can walk together."
I could tell while we were walking that he wanted to talk to me, but I couldn't think of anything to say to him so I just kept quiet. When we got to Mr. Gerald's room I went into the doorway and smiled when I saw my seat empty. Unfortunately there was an empty seat right next to it that Derek chose to sit in. I wouldn't have cared so much, except he was so good looking it was distracting me from my school work. I didn't have time to slack off if I was going to become a doctor. Both of my parents were doctors and it was expected of me to become a doctor as well.

When the final bell rang I headed to my locker and grabbed what i would need for homework that night. On my way out the side door towards the student parking lot I heard someone call my name, I turned around to see Derek jogging toward me. I stopped walking and waited for him to catch up. "Hey, I was wondering if you'd like to see a movie with me sometime?"
"Oh, I don't think my boyfriend would like that very much."
" You have a boyfriend? I'm sorry I didn't know."
"Yeah. Sorry. But I would love to hang out with you in a group sometime. We can invite Jamie."
"Yeah that sounds great."
"I'll message you to see if we can do something on Saturday."
"Okay sounds great."
"I'll walk through the parking lot with you since I'm parked out here too."
"Alright cool"

As I walk out to my car with Derek I get a phone call from my boyfriend. I answer and put it on speakerphone so I'm not being rude to Derek.
* where are you?*
*I'm walking to my car in the school parking lot, why?*
*you were supposed to be here five minutes ago. I have an appointment that I cannot be late for.*
*i know, you have the same appointment everyday, I'm getting into my car now, wait outside for me so we can leave as soon as I pull in*
*Fine, but I better not be late because of you*
I groan as I hang up, Derek has stopped walking and is staring at me.
"Why do you put up with that?"
"Put up with what?"
"Your boyfriend treating you like the dogshit he just scraped off the bottom of his shoes."
"That's just the way he is, he is very blunt and I did promise I was going to take him to this appointment and that I wasn't going to make him late this time. So I'm sorry but I have to go, I'll see you tomorrow."

"Jamie, how long has Jacob treated Scar like that?"
"Like what?" We were all sitting in Jamie's living room getting ready to start a movie. I was expecting a phone call from Jacob any minute now asking where I was, what I was doing, who I was with and how long I was going to be out.
"On my first day at school when Scar and I were walking through the parking lot Jacob was talking down on her because she was late taking him to his appointment."
"Oh yeah his appointment, can't be late for that." She said as she put air quotes around appointment and rolled her eyes.
"What is that face for?"
"His appointment that he has everyday is Scar driving him into town so he can visit his friend that sells him drugs. He needs Scar to take him because he is nineteen years old with no job, car, license or ambition, and 3 DWIs. He couldn't get a license if he tried."
Derek's eyes just about popped out of his head.
"Its not like that at all. I offer to take him into town to see his friend. "
"Do you also offer to pay for the drugs? Or to wait in the car for about an hour or so? She justifies that as designated homework time."
"Scar, you're not serious."
"Oh no, she is serious."
All of a sudden I felt really embarrassed about my relationship. Now my two closest friends were both telling me the same thing. That I was being treated, as Derek put it, like the dogshit he scraped off the bottom of his shoe. Does he really not treat me right?

17 years old (August 3rd, 2013)
Today is my 17th birthday and I am getting ready to go out to dinner and a movie with Jamie, Derek and Jacob.
My phone lights up with a picture of Jacob notifying me of a missed call. Immediately my phone rings again, it's Jacob again so I answered it quickly.
* What took you so long to answer the phone?*
*Sorry I was doing my hair and didn't have a free hand right away.*
*You know better than to ignore my calls.*
*I didn't do it on purpose, I was curling my hair.*
*It doesn't matter, were not going out now anyway, you have ruined my good mood by not answering my call the first time.*
* I am going out, if you don't want to go with me that's fine, but today is my birthday and I want to enjoy it with my friends.*
*Absolutely not, you will not go out with you friends without me and I already said were not going.*
*You're right, you did say that, but I'm going out. Whether you come out or not.*
*If you go out tonight you can kiss this relationship goodbye.*
*Goodbye then.*
