Chapter 4

Prom (June 7th, 2014)

I walked down the front walkway toward the limo, I was wearing my green satin prom dress, with the heels and accessories to match. Jamie followed close behind me in her light blue prom dress and heels to match. Derek and Aubrey were already in the limo waiting for us and our dates had just stepped out of the limo. Diego had asked me a few weeks ago if I would go with him to prom, he was cool and we were friendly with each other so I said yes. Jamie’s girlfriend, Emily, was her date for the evening. She was really cool, she didn’t go to school with us though, she went to a rival school. When we all got into the limo the driver pulled off and brought us to the prom venue. The prom venue was absolutely beautiful, the decorations were almost magical. There was twinkling fairy lights on the walls and there were beautiful center pieces on the tables.

Jamie, our dates and I spent the evening dancing away and enjoying our time together. We were all leaving for college soon. Derek and Aubrey were no where to be found for most of the night, they were probably just with her friends though.

Later on I found Derek outside on the steps of the building, he looked really upset. I sat down with him for a while without saying anything, just enjoying the cool air. I figured he would talk when he was ready. I was right.

“She doesn’t think she could be with a marine, she doesn’t want to be away from me for all that time. She says it’s going to be too emotionally traumatizing. She doesn’t trust me to be faithful while I’m away.”

“Did she really use the words ‘emotionally traumatizing’?”

“Yeah, I told her that it was only going to be about 4 months before she could see me again. She said that was too long. I asked her how she thought she’d be able to survive a 12 month deployment if she doesn’t think she can go four months without seeing me.”

“What did she say?”

“She said she had a lot to think about and that we weren’t together until she makes up her mind on what she wants.”

“Damn, I think Jamie, Emily and Diego are almost ready to go, we should call our limo back and get ready to go.”

“Yeah, I’m not really feeling like partying anymore."

"Let's go home."

We left Aubrey at the venue, she was taking a ride home with one of her friends who had driven themselves. Since Derek and I lived the furthest, we were the last two left in the limo. Derek was about to get out when he asked me to come with him, he would drive me home in the morning.

"Yeah sure. You alright?"

"Yeah, just don't want to be alone tonight."

As we were walking up the walkway to his front door he grabbed my hand and held it the entire way to his bedroom.

When we got to his bedroom he was getting me sweats and a t shirt that I could wear to bed. I changed in his room and his whole mood changed.

"I've never seen you in my clothes before."

"Yeah, I usually just wear my clothes to bed, can't exactly wear a prom dress to bed and be comfortable."

"Yeah, I can't imagine that would be comfortable. I know that you usually sleep on the couch in my room but, would you be against sleeping in my bed tonight? I want to hold you."

June 8th (Day after Prom, 17 years old)

I woke up earlier in the morning than I thought that I would. I was in Derek's bed, prom dress and sweats on the floor forgotten for the night. Derek was also naked. I got dressed into his sweats and took his car keys. I drove myself home to take a well needed shower to get all the makeup and hair product out. I threw some shorts and a tank top on and opened the group chat between Jamie, Derek and I.

*Meet at Derek's? I'll pick up breakfast?*

*I'm in. Em went home already this morning.*

*Awesome meet you there*

I ran out the door, I had to hurry if I was going to pick up breakfast and beat her to Derek's house.

“Well well well look what the cat dragged in” Jason said as I walked into the front entryway of their house. “Derek is in the shower, he’ll be right out.”

“Okay thank you. I brought breakfast, I'm hoping it will buy your silence until your son and I have a chance to talk about what happened last night. I’ll just wait for him in his room.” I made myself comfortable in his bed and turned on the Xbox, looking for something cool to watch on Hulu or Netflix. I didn’t find anything good so I busied myself with my cell phone until Derek got out of the shower, he would pick a movie, he always picked a good movie for us to watch.

“You act like you live here.”

I laughed and said “Yeah, I might as well, I spend enough time here to know where everything is, and I am comfortable enough to help myself.”

Derek just smiled. The smile was more of like a panty-dropping smirk. It was just then that I noticed that he was only wearing a towel. I jumped up out of the chair. “Sorry, I’ll step out so you can change.”

“I'm not sure that is necessary after last night.” Damn that freaking smirk.

"I'm going to step out, Jamie will be here any minute."

I waited outside his bedroom door until he gave me the all clear. When I got back into his room he was lounging on the bed scrolling through Netflix. He forgot to put a shirt on though. Just a pair of basketball shorts, but god did he look good. He was smirking like he knew it too.

"Is this my punishment for leaving without waking you up?"

"Is what a punishment?" Another smirk.

I guess I'll just change the subject.

“Have you gotten any information on a flight out or anything like that? Do they know where you’re headed? Did they tell you what to pack?” I said.

“Woah, slow down. Yes to everything.” He says while laughing, he can tell I'm nervous about him leaving.

“Oh okay cool. what are we gonna watch on Netflix?”

“I don't know I’m just gonna pick something. But I wanted to talk to you about something first.”

“Yeah what is it?”

“I want to get married”

“Like to Aubrey?”

“No, like to you.”

I didn't know what to say so I didn't say anything for a few minutes. “Okay, I’ll humor you for a minute. Why do you want to get married to me?”

“I mean it wouldn't be a marriage built on love, it’s honestly for convenience. My dad is sick and his doctors say that his time is running out, only about a year or so left.”

“Okay, I still don't understand.”

“By being my wife, I can make it so you can make medical decisions for him and decisions for me while I’m gone, You’ll be able to access my bank accounts if the need arises. Basically its just an insurance policy incase something happens and I can’t get home right away to deal with it, or if I wont be able to leave at all.”

“So we would just be married that way I could do your paperwork?” I laughed.

“Yes, pretty much.”

“Do I have to change my name?”

“No, you don't have to change your name, and you would just live your life as if we are still friends, because we will be, we will just be married in case of an emergency.”

“And what about a divorce?”

“What do you mean?”

“Well were not going to stay married the rest of our lives, when you’re done with the military, or until you have found someone else to marry we will have to get divorced so we can continue to live our lives.”

“Yes something like that, I haven’t thought that far. I’m going to go get the paperwork soon incase you decide that you do want to go through with it.”

“Let me think about it, I’ll let you know within the next few days. But why won’t you ask Aubrey?”

“I don’t think I trust her with my bank accounts or with my fathers health. She’s a little selfish and I don’t think she really cares about my father at all.”

“Yeah, she doesn't care about him at all. You know that she has never actually met him right? I don’t turn 18 until August so you’ll have to wait until then.”

“I know, I should have free time around then, I’ll fly you out for the weekend and we’ll get married.”

“How long have you been thinking about this?”

“Like 3 months.”

“Yeah, you know what? Screw it, lets get married.”

Just then Jamie comes in singing about how hungry she was and how she was excited to eat the bagel I got for her. I thought I really loved him, I know at the back of my mind that I was pretty much a rebound for him because he just broke up with Aubrey, but I didn’t care. At least I didn't at the time. We weren't even together anyway, just messing around and we weren’t exactly romantic, only when we were having sex. I enjoyed my time with him and I wouldn’t change that for the world.

High School Graduation (June 27th 2014)

High school graduation was pretty boring, I graduated in the top three of my class so I had to give a speech. I hated public speaking but I didn't really have a choice in the matter. My mother and Father showed up but they sat all the way in the back because they showed up late, they arrived just in time to hear that I was the 3rd in my class and they heard my speech. Neither of my parents looked impressed and I had long ago given up on trying to impress them. Derek and Jamie cheered for me though, that’s all that mattered. Derek was coming to stay the night at my house, he was due to leave in a few days and I wanted to spend as much time with him as I could. I had started to fall for him and I think that he was starting to fall for me too. At least I could only hope he felt the same. He was going to meet my parents tonight as my friend, I wish we were more though.

June 29, 2014

Tomorrow was the day, I wouldn't see him until the middle of September when he would complete basic training and I would fly out to marry him. He was taking the first flight out at about 6 am so he had to be up and out early in the morning. We spent the entire day together and ended the night in bed together. I woke up the next morning alone in bed with a text saying that he landed and he couldn't wait to see me in a few months.
