A little bit later Jason comes back to the room, he has the rest of my dinner in a to go box.
"What are you going to do now?"
"I don't know, do you think I should even tell him?"
"He's not going to take it well."
"I'm not trying to trap him. I'm going to tell him that I am having this baby whether he wants to be a father or not. If he doesn't want to be a father than that's fine. I can do it on my own, I'm meeting new friends, and I have you and Jamie."
"How are you going to get him away from Aubrey?"
"I have no clue, maybe I'll just corner him. But I don't want to ruin the rest of the day for him either."
"We will figure it out, stop stressing its not good for the baby."
Just then there is a knock on the door.
I answer it and it's Derek.
"She just got into the shower, I don't have much time."
"I just wanted to talk about the ceremony and give you info on the wedding. How are you going to get away from her long enough?"
"I gave her my credit card and told her to go shopping and buy whatever she wants."
"You're going to be paying for that for years." Jason says. I would laugh, but it's a little too truthful to be funny.
"I really don't like her" I finally say, I can't believe my mouth just said that without consulting with my brain first.
"I know you don't, but I've really missed her. I think I might even love her." I'm surprised I didn't gag.
"Remember on your first day of school when you overhead a conversation between Jacob and I and you got super pissed because he was treating me like shit, and when you said something about it I made excuses for him and totally just ignored the fact that he was manipulating me?"
"Yeah...? what about it?"
"You can't see it now, but that is exactly what Aubrey is doing to you. She is manipulating you into doing whatever she wants. She said it herself that she wasn't planning on coming until she found out that I was coming. I bet she fed you some "I'm so sorry baby, I missed you while you were gone, I never should have broke up with you" line."
"Yeah something like that."
"Jamie has been watching her since they both go to the same college, classes started a couple weeks ago and she already has a reputation. I know you're not going to believe that, but it's the truth. She didn't miss you, and it was a damn good thing she broke up with you. She doesn't deserve you."
"Who deserves me then? You? Do you deserve me?"
"Yes, I do, but I'm not offering. I don't think that we could work out with the heart break in our past." I've decided I'm leaving first thing in the morning after our wedding.
"Why aren't you offering?"
"Because you just told me that you love her, I'm not going to get in the way of that. I'm only giving you my opinion because we are close friends, or we were before you left."
"Shit, she's probably almost done with her shower. I have to go, were not done with this us conversation though."
"Yes we are. There is nothing more to discuss."
I turn to look at Jason and he looks stunned.
"That's the calmest I have seen him since he started dating that creature."
"Creature? Really? I like it, It fits her. She is a very exhausting creature. She brings out a different side of him. I don't really like that side of him. But now I know how He and Jamie felt when they had to watch Jacob be a total douche to me. I didn't listen to them either."
"I hope he smartens up. He can't let that creature hold him back."
"Unfortunately the only thing we can do is try to help him see who she really is. I hope you don't mind me cutting the vacation short, I'm going to fly home a couple of days early, the stress isn't good for the baby and she is stressful."
"No honestly I think that would be best for you in your situation. I just hope that he can get her to back off for one after noon."
"I bet she wont. She will be calling and texting him all afternoon. You might have to take his phone away."
Jason laughs and says that he is ready to go to bed. So we get into our separate beds and go to sleep.
I have to force my eyes open the following morning, the sleep was just too good, but there is only 45 minutes until brunch. I shower, then dress and do my hair and makeup. I prefer natural looking soft makeup and my hair down in long wavy tresses. I choose a yellow sundress and brown strappy sandals. I think the soft yellow goes well with my natural red hair.
"Scar, brunch is in 20 we have to get ready to go."
"Alright, I'm ready, Just have to grab a jacket and my purse."
When we pull up to the café I chose for this brunch, Derek and Aubrey are sitting together, snuggling close and being their regular sickening selves. It should be illegal to watch the guy you have feelings for snuggle and kiss your nemesis.
"Good morning." I say, hoping we can have a nice brunch with no incidents. Yesterdays dinner was enough. It's time to put the past behind us and start over.
"Yeah, it was until you got here." She replies. Derek doesn't even blink an eye.
"Yeah, I'm sure, however we need to start getting along for this trip or its not going to be relaxing for anybody."
"I think I figured out why Derek left you for me."
"Derek and I were never together."
"Oh I know, he told me last night that he never laid a finger on you and that you made a couple of passes at him and he always turned you down."
No matter how badly I want to rub it in her face that I've been with her man, I'm set to marry him tomorrow and I am currently giving life to his son, I have to be the bigger person, he doesn't deserve me to get petty about all this. After a long look at Derek I finally speak.
"Yes, that is the truth. We were never together romantically or sexually, no matter how hard I tried to get through to him after you broke his heart."
She scowled. Guess she doesn't like being reminded that she was a moron in the past for letting him go. This scowl makes up for not being able to be petty about the situation.
The rest of brunch goes by smoothly when she realizes that I'm not going to let her talk down on me. When we are getting ready to leave Jason and I are discussing what we are going to do until the ceremony later.
"Oh, Derek didn't tell you?"
"What didn't he tell me Aubrey?"
"Well, since he didn't know that I was coming he only ordered two tickets. Which means he didn't have a ticket for me to attend, so I told him that I would just take your ticket. You don't need to attend now and play his girlfriend, because his actual girlfriend is here."
"Ahh, okay. Well enjoy yourselves then. I'll stay home and rest. I've been needing a lot of that lately." Maybe if I start leaving hints he will catch on. Too bad he's not paying attention to anything I say. He too busy staring a hole into the back of Aubrey's head. I can't exactly tell what that facial expression is. But if looks could kill. Looks like they actually did not discuss this but he knows better than to call her out on it in public.
"Wow, looks like someone has gained some weight."
"Who are you talking about?"
"You obviously, I thought your face was fatter when I was looking at you at dinner yesterday and now that I see how big your hips are getting and the fat you have accumulated on your stomach I know that you are letting yourself go." I'm too damn shocked to open my mouth and say something, so I start laughing. If only she knew the reason for the weight gain was because her boyfriends son was craving ice cream and Oreos for four days straight and I couldn't keep anything else down. She must not like that response because she huffs and walks away. Jason and Derek are staring at each other, trying to assert their dominance or some other stupid thing that guys do. I sit back down in my chair and wait for them to finish up.
"You are a pussy whipped man. Did you even hear the words coming out of her mouth? Or did you just tune them out? Scarlett is your friend, she is doing you a major favor and you let that shit stain of a creature talk to her like she is garbage. I raised you to do what was right. Do not let it happen again."
"Are you serious Dad? I cannot control her. She is a grown woman who makes her own choices."
"Are you going to stand here and defend the choice she just made?"
"I choose her so I don't think I have a choice."
"You are making a mistake going with that one, you could be with anybody and you chose a woman who is so entitled that she thinks its okay to scream at a waitress because she set her food down last. This better be a fucking joke."
"Alright alright lets get going Jason. I'm not feeling too good."
As were walking towards the front door of the restaurant we hear a lot of horn honking. When we get to the front door we can see that it is Aubrey in Derek's SUV honking and screaming "Derek, Hurry up. I'm bored of this place."
I turn to look at Derek and say "I'm still on for tomorrow, but I'm not doing it as a favor to you. I'm doing it to protect your father from her."
Jason and I get into the uber that is going to take us back to the hotel and he starts to apologize "scar I'm so-"
"Do not apologize for his shit behavior. I've decided that I'm not going to tell him. It won't make a difference at this point. He wants nothing to do with me and he has made that very clear. First thing after the ceremony I am flying back home anyway. He doesn't know where I live and he won't look for me until he wants a divorce anyway. I'm going to be okay."
"What did you mean when you said that you were doing this as a favor to me and not to him?"
"I am marrying him so that he can't marry the creature. She'd probably try to put you in an assisted care facility so she can gut your house and spend every last penny or Derek's money on becoming a stay-at-home mom with a full-time nanny. Also I have decided that I am going to take his name, that way the Mercer line can continue in name and blood. At least one of your grandchildren will grow up to be half-way normal."
"When did you decide that?"
"Just now, I knew the name I wanted to give him and it sounds better with Mercer anyway."
"What are you naming him?"
"Jaxon Oliver Mercer."
"When you spell it J-A-X-O-N, it is only one letter away from being the same name as his one and only grandfather, and subsequently father figure, since his father won't be in the picture."
"Thats perfect thank you."
"Are you crying? Have you gone soft?"
"Oh shut up in a couple more months you'll be crying over everything too."
"Oh yeah, I can't wait."
