Chapter 7

Wedding Day Sunday September 14, 2014

Today is the big day, I get up in the morning with a peaceful feeling, after 4 PM today I can start getting ready to go home and I never have to see her stupid face again.

I get dressed in a long white maxi dress with brown sandals. My hair is hanging long down my back with just the sides pulled back to keep it out of my face. I choose a little bit more make up today, I feel like I need it. My eyes look dark like I haven't slept and I'm starting to break out on my chin. As if that's not a perfectly clear sign from the universe to run in the opposite direction.

I order an Uber to take me to the wedding ceremony. Jason is supposed to be helping Derek get away from the creature. I pray they pull it off. When I pull up to the small church I see that Derek's SUV is already here, that's a great sign. Before I get the chance to turn around and run back to the car, Jason spots me.

"Oh my gosh look at you. You look so beautiful today. I'm so happy that you are doing this for me."

"I would do almost anything to protect you from the creature."

"Well the ceremony is going to start, I checked with the officiant, no romantic stuff, short sweet and too the point, and no kissing."

"Aww. I was looking forward to that part." Jason laughs because he knows how sarcastic I'm being.

"alright I have to go get up there to sign as a witness."

"Alright, catch ya on the flipside."

"I now pronounce you Mr. and Mrs. Derek Michael Mercer."

I grab Dereks hand and take off back down the aisle, that ceremony was not short and he doesn't have much time before she comes looking for him. As soon as we get to the foyer of the church I let go of his hand and say "we have some paperwork to fill out and I have some paperwork from our lawyer to make sure that I am in charge if there is an emergency or you need something done stateside and you can't get here to do it."

"Okay, sounds good."

"There are four different papers to sign and 3 copies of each, one for you, one for me and one for the lawyer. Let's get this done quick before she comes looking for you. Although I am interested in how you're going to explain that we just got married behind her back because you don't trust her to do the right thing." I can't help myself from being petty some times.

We take our time filling out our paperwork and when we are finished I say "I'm flying out early tomorrow. There is no reason for me to be here any longer. I thought we'd have more to figure out. I was hoping we'd have more to figure out. But we don't and you have other entertainment. So I'm going to head out before I step on toes." I turn around and walk away.

I just barely hear him say "What the hell does that mean?"

Thank god for Jason, though. He says "She was hoping that you'd chance a relationship with her. She was going to take you out and show you how good a relationship with her could really be. She wanted to show you how you should be treated. She even got her hair and nails done before she came, hoping she could impress you."

"She's always been impressive. She doesn't need to do those things for any man."

"You wouldn't understand. She sees you with that creature and she thinks that you like the high maintenance type. So she was trying to be high maintenance for you."

"What? Why would she change like that for me?"

"She feels the same way about you that you feel for Aubrey, or at least the way you say you feel."

"Jason, that's enough. I apparently tell you way too much." I keep walking toward the Uber and hop in.

When I get back to the hotel it's only five thirty so I decide to put my bathing suit on and go for a swim in the hotel pool.

At about six thirty I decide to go to a local restaurant, I order dinner to go and head back to the hotel with it. I put some music on when I get back into the room, I finish my dinner and a really good song comes on Pandora. I don't think I've ever heard this song before but I really like it. I start swaying my hips to the music while I pack my suitcase up and reschedule my flight for the first one out in the morning.

"I think you've gotten hotter since I left for the military."

I scream and nearly jump so high I could reach the ceiling. "Oh my god Derek. What the hell are you doing? Trying to give me a heart attack? You could at least wait until next week after the lawyer has the opportunity to submit the life insurance paperwork."

Derek laughs a deep laugh and rubs the back of his neck, which is one of his nervous moves. "I think we should talk"

"I agree, I think we should only communicate through our lawyer, we pay a fee every month so he will do whatever we need. It will be easier for you and you wont be able to incriminate yourself with Aubrey."

"Wait what? I came up here to ask if what my dad said was true.

"Yes it is true. I do have feelings for you, I probably always will and I was hoping this vacation would open you back up to the possibility of being together, and yes I did go to a salon and get my hair and nails done to try to impress you, but I hate having nails and she cut way too much off of my hair. You have chosen Aubrey and I'm not going to get in the way of that."

"Thank you, I know you will move on eventually, you will make a great wife to a lucky man some day."

"Have you moved on from me?"

"No, but I know that going after you will be no good for either of us."

"I agree."

"Well thank you for coming and thank you for marrying me."

"It was my pleasure, I guess." This is so awkward.

He walks out the door of the hotel room and I realize it's very late. I better get to sleep if I'm going to make my flight tomorrow.
