Chapter 13.

I had no idea what the fuck was happening, but something was definitely going on between Ezra and Jax.

“If I ever found the right girl, of course I’d stay,” Jax smiled. “No bloody question.”

“Well, maybe Francine could help you with that,” Ezra smirked.

Jax turned to Francine and smiled, and her cheeks flushed out of embarrassment.

“Um...maybe,” Jax stuttered.

I was dating Ezra, but a tinge of jealousy waved through me thinking about Jax with another girl. I hated feeling that way, and I knew I had to find a way to get over the crush, because it wasn’t fair on any of us.

“Francine would be much better for you than Amber,” I cut in. “Sorry.”

Jax turned and chuckled deeply. “Can’t argue with that.”

We continued having our dinner and talking. Ezra and Jax seemed to be civilized for the rest of the evening, though I noticed Jax glancing in my direction a few times.

I wonder what he wanted to talk to me about.

I stood in front of the front entrance looking at Ezra. He smiled and placed his hands on my waist before pulling me in for a kiss. My arms automatically wrapped around his neck.

“I’ll speak to you soon, babe,” he said, pulling away.

I nodded and watched him leave before I found myself back in the kitchen to help clean up.

Jax and Francine were talking to each other, and she was smiling, clearly flirting with him

Fucking tramp! Ugh. Damnit, Beth. Okay, I don’t mean that. Fuck. Maybe just a little.

I shook my head to clear the unwanted thoughts before I cleared the plates, leaving Jax and Francine to talk outside alone.

A few weeks had gone by. Ezra had to go interstate for a few nights but said he would be back for the party at my parent’s place.

Which happened to be tonight.

Jax’s parents couldn’t attend, but they should be arriving the following morning.

I stood in front of my mirror, getting ready for the party, swiping my red blouse and tugging my black skirt. My hair was let down and the fringe moved to the left side of my face. Feeling confident, I grabbed my bag and made my way over to mom and dad’s.

“Hey, Mom,” I greeted when I stepped into the kitchen.

“Hey, sweetheart. You look beautiful.”

“Thanks. You look amazing.” I leaned in and kissed her on the cheek. “Anything I can help you with?”

She shook her head. “The caterers have taken care of everything. When is Ezra arriving?”

I glanced at my watch then back towards my mom. “Soon. He’s coming straight from the airport.”

“Hard worker that man.”

“Yeah, he is.”

Things had been fine between us. We spoke on the phone every day, but sometimes it was difficult to find time to see him as he’d been so busy with work. I did, however, spend time with Jax a few days ago. We went Christmas shopping which was great. He wanted me to help him get a few gifts to send over to his family back in Australia. I told him he was cutting it close.

“Hey, Beth.”

Speaking of Jax.

I turned around and my breath hitched. Jax looked incredibly hot in his light grey jacket and black pants. The White shirt brought out his green eyes, and I couldn’t help but stare into them.

“Hey, Jax. You look great. Nice suit.”

“Thanks,” he smiled, while his eyes travelled up and down my body, causing me to blush. “Red, huh?”

“I think red is my colour.”

“Yeah, most definitely.” I noticed him bite his lip before he drew his attention to my mom. “Anything you need?”

“No thank you, dear. Everything is sorted. Maybe head outside and keep Francine company.”

Shit. Francine is here. I guess my parents invited her...unless...Jax did?

If he had started to date Francine, he never mentioned anything to me, but I did know one thing for sure. I wanted to see Jax happy. If that meant he found happiness with Francine, so be it.

“Oh, sure,” Jax replied, clearing his throat. “I’ll head outside.”

Jax left, at the same time my attention turned to the entrance where I saw Ezra walk in with his parents.

“Hey,” I smiled.

“Hey, babe.”

I leaned in and gave him a brief kiss on the cheek before I turned to his mom and dad. “Hey.”

“Hello, dear,” His mom greeted.

Ezra’s dad’s gaze made me uncomfortable. It was the second time I had caught him checking me out, and I felt sick by it.

“Hello, Beth,” his dad smirked.

My attention swiftly turned to Ezra who reached out his hand. “Let’s get a drink.”

We went out to the bar which had been set up by my parents. The same bartender smiled as soon as we reached him.

“What’ll it be?”

“Absinthe please,” I requested.

“Are you sure?” The bartender asked.

I nodded and beamed. “Absolutely.”

He reached beneath the bar and grabbed the green bottle.

“Drinking that stuff without me?” Anastasia yelled. “How dare you!”

I smiled and turned around, noticing her with Morgan. “Fuckin balls! As if I would have waited to start drinking.”

“That’s my girl.”

I noticed Jax was over the other side of the yard talking to Francine, who was smiling again.

Fucking tramp. Ugh. Stop it.

He caught me staring and winked before I quickly averted my gaze. After spending some time with the guests, I walked back to the bar with Ezra, Anastasia and her beau.

“Two more for my friends, please, and one for me.”

“Are you sure you want to drink that stuff?” Ezra asked.

I nodded without hesitation. “Absolutely. I drank a couple of the shots at your party. It tasted like black jelly beans. Want some?”

Ezra paused for a moment. “Sure. I’ll give it a go.”

The bartender grabbed four shots. We each took one and clinked our glasses before kicking our necks back. I swallowed the liquid and felt it burn my throat.

Scrunching up my face, I placed the glass back on the bar. “One more please.”

He poured another lot which we eagerly drank with ease.

“Ugh. I can’t stand the taste,” Ezra said in disgust.

I smiled at him. “It’s not so bad. It will get me drunk quicker.”

“Oh, really? Ezra winked. “Can’t wait to see that.”

“Hey, what are you guys drinking?” Jax interjected.

I turned to him and Francine, who stood incredibly close with Jax.

“Absinthe,” I replied. “We’ve just had a couple of shots.”

“Doesn’t that make you see stuff?” Francine asked.

I shook my head and pointed to the bartender. “Not according to him.”

The bartender poured two more shots and handed them over to Jax and his---date. I watched and smiled as they both swallowed the intense drink.

E turned to the bartender. “Grab us a bottle of vodka and some glasses.”

The bartender nodded, and returned shortly with an entire filled bottle and six shot glasses. We all made our way to the outdoor seating area.

“Okay, who’s up for a game?” Ezra asked.

“A drinking game?” Anastasia rubbed her hands together. “I’m up for it.”

“Hell, yeah!” Morgan exclaimed.

Ezra poured each glass with vodka and handed one over to each of us. “Okay, so someone has to say something, and if you’ve done it, then you take a drink. Simple.”

“You mean never have I ever?” I questioned.

“Yeah, that’s it,” Ezra replied.

“Okay. Francine, you start,” I said.

She stretched her lips and took a deep breath. “Um. Never have I ever kissed on a first date.”

Everyone of us took a shot before Anastasia asked her question. “Never have I ever had a threesome.”

Morgan took a shot.

My eyes widened the moment Ezra brought his glass to his lips. “It was a few years ago.”

I smiled. “Interesting. Not sure if it’s something I could ever do. I’m too selfish.”

“Never have I ever cheated on someone.”

I glanced at Jax, whose eyes were focused on Ezra, yet none of the people in our group took shots.

Ezra had a history with women. We hadn’t discussed how many he’d dated compared to how many he’d slept with, and he hadn’t asked about my history either.

“Never have I ever had sex in a public place,” Morgan questioned.

I thought for a moment and smiled before I brought the shot glass up to my lips. Ezra’s eyes widened before he drunk his own.

“Really? You’ve had sex in a public place?”

“Yes,” I replied. “It was one time and one time only. Never to be repeated again.”

It was quiet until Francine asked the next question. “Never have I ever liked two people at once.

Fucking balls!

I waited and waited for someone else to take a shot, because I knew damn well, I should have. Anastasia glanced at me, somehow knowing what I was thinking. She brought the shot glass up to her lips and placed it back down again. Anastasia smiled, watching me take my own shot.

“Beth and I had a crush on two brother’s back in high school.”

Oh, Anastasia. I could kiss you right now!

Jax smiled at me and I couldn’t help but blush. To avoid his gaze, I shifted my attention to Ezra, who was focused on his parents inside.

“You okay?”

“Yeah,” Ezra replied. “I’ll be back, babe.”

He stood from his seat, and after a few more shots, I decided to look for him. “I’ll go find Ezra. I’ll be right back.”

After almost stumbling, I found my way inside the house. Most people were outside and enjoying the party. Ezra’s voice resounded from the second living room. It was low, but I could still make out what he said.

“I can’t believe you’re making me fucking do this. I told you I wasn’t interested in Beth, yet you’re forcing me to date her. It’s exhausting pretending that I’m into her. She’s not even my damn type!”

“It took a lot to set up your flight with hers,” Ezra’s dad said. “It’s the only way we can get to her parents’ money. You have to do this, son.”
