JAX’S POINT OF VIEW
Beth’s eyes widened at me. Her cheeks flushed as a million things went through her head about what she could have done. I didn’t want to tell Beth about her trying to kiss me as I knew that would embarrass her more than she already was, and she had been through enough already. Fuck. If she wasn’t pissed, I would have kissed her and not let go.
“Okay, tell me,” she said. “Wait! No, don’t.” Beth took a deep breath. “Okay. Tell me.” I went to open my mouth, but she stopped me again. “No, wait!”
I couldn’t help but laugh. She was really the cutest, and sweetest girl I had ever met, and was damn adorable when she had no idea what to say. And when she rambled. Fuck. I loved it when she rambled.
Taking her hands in mine, I felt her instantly relax and tense up at the same time.
How does she do that?
I glanced in her beautiful and mesmerizing eyes. “It’s nothing embarrassing. I promise. It’s got to do with Ezra.” The realisation hits her expression, as if she remembered something. “Beth. You kicked him and his parents out. Do you remember?”
She nodded and her eyes pooled with tears, but she managed to stop them from falling. “God, I’m such an idiot.”
“I don’t believe that for one fucking second.”
Beth bit her lip, and I could see her mind thinking again. “It’s embarrassing. He made me look like a complete fucking fool.”
“Did he cheat on you?” I squeezed her hand gently, needing her to know that I’d be there for her. Even if she just wanted to be friends.
“He---God. I can’t even bring myself to say it without getting angry. He’s been lying to me the entire time. Our relationship was setup by his parents as a way for them to get to my parent’s money.”
I tilted my head at the same time anger swam beneath my veins. “Wait. Are you saying he never liked you?”
She nodded. “He was using me. I should have trusted my instincts. He was too good to be true.”
Oh, man. I need to have a fucking word with him.
It was beyond me how anyone could want to hurt Beth. How the fuck could he only pretend to like her? Fuck. It took me one look at Beth, and I knew. The moment she opened her mouth that was it for me. I was completely and utterly hooked.
“Beth, I’m sorry. I can’t believe someone would do that. Fuck. That’s not a real man. You have no reason to feel shame. It shows what a dickhead he is, and not anything about you.” I held her tight. “Ezra---he’s a fucking idiot. To even think someone would have to fake their feelings for you.” I shook my head. “He didn’t deserve you Neither did Layton.”
“Thank you, Jax,” Beth flushed.
“No worries. Do your parents know?”
“I told them last night---I think.”
“They’ve known each other for ages, aye? That must have been a shock to them as well.”
I stretched my lips and muttered beneath my breath. “I’m also sorry for---um.”
I scratched the back of my neck leaving my other hand firmly in her grasp. “Well, I was only supposed to stay here with you until you knocked out.” The truth was, I couldn’t leave her. I didn’t want to. She fell asleep in my arms and there was no way I was going to leave her. “I knocked out too.”
“Wait. I asked you to stay?”
I nodded. “Yeah, you did.”
“Oh. Okay. Sorry. I thought the worst when I woke up next to you.”
I raised my brows. “The worst?”
“Fucking balls!” she cursed. “I did it again. I’m sorry. You know what I mean.”
“Yeah, yeah. The idea of waking up next to me that bad?”
This time I felt her squeeze my hand while she shook her head. And it was the look she gave me, but it was one I had seen a handful of times, and one I’m sure I’d given her.
If Ezra were there at that moment, I would have given him the same treatment I gave Layton. He deserved to have his ass kicked and shouldn’t get away with what he’d done to Beth. She didn’t deserve to be treated that way.
“Can I ask you something Jax?”
“Yeah, of course.”
“Did you mean what you said at dinner the other night?”
“What did I say?”
“That you would stay here in the country if you ever found the right person?”
Fuck, Beth. I meant every damn word. She had no idea I was talking about her. Of course, I would stay if anything happened between us.
“Yeah, if I ever found the right girl, I’d stay for sure.” I cleared my throat. “Why do you ask?”
Her pink cheeks turn a shade darker. She was so perfect. The way her beautiful brown hair fell neatly on her face, and the way the colour brought out her gorgeous eyes, which I couldn’t look away from. I was such an idiot for trying to push her away from me, and now I wanted nothing more than to be close to her.
“No reason It’s just nice to see a guy wanting to fight for someone he wants.”
Beth had no clue how ready I was to fight for her, hell, I did with Layton, but I couldn’t tell her that.
I was cut off when there was a sudden knock on the door. “Beth, honey? Are you awake?”
She pulled her hand away from mine and I instantly felt disappointed, missing her touch already. Beth stood and headed to the bedroom door, slowly creaking it open and stopping it so her mum couldn’t see me.
“Is Jax with you?” Beth’s mum asked.
“What? No. Why would he be here?”
“Well, his parents have just arrived. They’re downstairs, I thought maybe he wanted to see them.”
“Oh,” Beth replied. “Maybe try his bedroom, or I’ll give him a call.”
“It’s okay, darling,” her mom replied. “Jax, I know you’re in there. Come down soon as your parents would like to see you.”
Beth closed the door and turned to me with her cheeks flushed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t want my mom thinking---.”
“Yeah, I know. All good.” My shoulders slumped. Of course, nothing happened between us, but the desperation to kiss her was all I felt. I couldn’t be alone thinking that there was something there, and it was worth fighting for. Fuck. I’m gonna fight for this girl more than I’ve ever fought for anyone else.
“We should head downstairs. I might get changed though.”
She smiled at me. “So---.”
“You’re in my room.”
“Oh. Shit. Sorry. I’ll meet you downstairs.”
I went to walk out of the room, but she stopped me. “Thank you for staying with me last night.”
As soon as I entered the kitchen, my parents smiled at me. I strolled up to my mum and gave her a hug before I shook my dad’s hand.
“Good to see you, son. How’s everything?”
“Good, dad. Shouldn’t be too long to open up the joint.”
My attention shifted to Beth’s mum. She was drinking coffee and smiling at me through her eyes.
“I know, Jax. After everything with Layton and Ezra, I don’t need to tell you what we’d do to you if you ever hurt her.”
I shook my head. “It’s not like that. We’re not together.”
But damn I wanted to be. I ached to call Beth mine. My girl and no one else’s. I didn’t want Layton, Ezra or any other bloke thinking they had a chance, because I wouldn’t let that happen. I didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to ask Beth to be mine.
“What happened with Ezra?” Mum asked. “You said she was dating him?”
“They broke up last night,” Beth’s mum replied. “Long story.”
My own mum tried to hide her smile, because I let it slip over the phone that I had a crush on Beth. Mum adores Beth and I couldn’t blame her. She said her outbursts were refreshing, and she would fit right at home in Aussie.
My attention swayed when Beth walked into the kitchen looking perfect in black yoga pants and an aqua jumper. Fuck. She would look good in anything.
“Hello,” she greeted the room, walking up to my parents and hugging them both.
“Nice to see you again,” Mum said.
“Same to you.”
Beth glanced to her mom. “Hey. I’m sorry about---.”
“It’s okay, dear. As long as you used protection.”
Beth’s face went red as she turned to me then we both yelled out in unison. “Oh my God. Nothing happened.”
My mum turned to me with narrowed eyes. “What’s going on?”
“Beth and I slept together.” Mum’s eyes widened before I realized what I had said, and how it sounded coming out from my mouth. “Fuck. I mean in the same bed. Geez.”
“I need to do some last-minute shopping today.” Beth turned to me. “Want to join me?”
Fuck, yes. This is my chance to tell Beth how I feel.
I smiled and nodded. “Let me get ready.”
There was nothing more I wanted than to have some alone time with Beth since the last day we went shopping, though this would be different. I could be honest without worrying what her boyfriend would think. Fucking asshole.
After quickly getting changed, I met Beth downstairs near the front door. “Hey.”
“Yeah.” We both left her parent’s home and made our way to her car. The snow crunched beneath our feet until we settled into our seats.
“What do you need to buy?”
“Last minute gift, and besides, I wanted to get out of the house after that conversation.”
“Yeah, sorry about what I said.”
Beth smiled. “It’s okay.”
God her lips are perfect.
I caught myself admiring how beautiful she was, but quickly turned my head away. Beth started the car then turned it off when she noticed someone else come into the driveway. “Fucking balls.”
