Chapter 2

“I’m sorry?” Ezra asked after he heard my whisper.

“Oh, um. Nothing. Sorry. Hi,” I mumbled and stared into Ezra’s eyes. He smiled, and my lips automatically curved to the side.

I broke my gaze when I looked ahead, and noticed Anastasia seated next to the tattoo guy. I have to remind myself to kill her later.

“Should I go?” Ezra asked.

“Of course not. I think Anastasia was interested in the guy you were sitting next to, so good luck trying to get her out of it again.”

Ezra leaned over and dipped his voice low. “I offered her my seat,” he admitted. “Perfect opportunity to talk to you.”

My cheeks went red. This guy was seriously something. What the hell do I say?

That’s nice.” That’s nice? Seriously Beth? The fuck are you thinking? “I mean, yes. You can sit here. Ugh. Not that you have a choice now.”

He chuckled at my inability to string a few words together. When I caught sight of Anastasia, she mouthed the words I’m sorry to me before her attention went back to the guy. Yep. I’ll kill her later.

“So, tell me about yourself?”

Ezra yanked me from my thoughts. “Oh, um. I’m a writer of short stories.”

“What kind of stories?”

I failed to stop my cheeks from burning. “Romance novels.”

“Oh.” Ezra’s cheeks burned as red as my own. “Do you have something I could read of yours?”

“Yes,” I replied. “I mean no. I have something, but you can’t read it.”

How am I a writer if I can’t even put two words together. Good one, Beth. You’re sounding like such a fool.

“Why not?”

“They’re a little---what’s the word I’m looking for. Raunchy. Perfect word.”

Ezra’s plush lips curved up. “Now I definitely want to read it.”

“Not gonna happen.”

“Can I offer you a drink?” The flight attendant interjected at the perfect moment.

“Some water, please,” Ezra replied.

“Yes, sir. Certainly,” she said, before she shifted her attention to me. “And for you, ma’am?”

“Water for me too, thanks.”

She grabbed two bottles from the tray and handed one to each of us before she strolled away. I decided to change the subject as I didn’t want to have a conversation about my sex stories with this incredibly gorgeous stranger. “So, what do you do?”

“I’m a T.V. sports presenter.”

Oh, shit. Now I know where I’ve seen him before.

“I think I’ve seen you on T.V. before.”

He smiled at me. “Right, but I still can’t figure out where I’ve seen you.”

I shrugged my shoulders and watched him take the bottle of water to his lips for a small sip. The muscles in his throat moved as he swallowed the liquid.

“My parents are lawyers in New York,” I said after I cleared my throat. “Maybe something to do with that.” He suddenly spat out his water and I felt a few drops splash on my cheek. “Shit. Something I said?”

He turned his head to me. “Fuck. Now I know where I’ve seen you before.”

“Well, don’t hold back now.”

His expression turned serious before he gazed around the plane with a panicked expression. “I shouldn’t even be talking to you.”

Wait. What? “I’m sorry?” My heart beat in my chest and I wondered what the hell he was on about.

Ezra’s expression softened but the tone of his voice was almost harsh. “Your mom and dad are enemies with my parents.”

Holy moly. What the fuck is he on about?

“Okay, you’re going to have to give me a little more detail than that.”

He leaned in closer and lowered his voice to a whisper. “My parents would kill me if they saw us talking to each other.”

I moved in closer and matched my voice to his. “It’s a good thing they’re not here right now, isn’t it?”

Ezra’s lips curved up and I couldn’t help but smile back. “I’m kidding by the way. Our families love each other. I remember seeing you a few times at our house, but I think you had some guy with you the last time.”

“Wait,” I tilted my head. “Your house? You mean the big ass mansion with the-.”

He nodded.

I was beginning to remember him now too. My ex was with me at the time at the party, before he cheated on me of course. I couldn’t help but smile, but it faltered when something else came to mind.

Ezra was a player when it came to women. I had heard of his reputation before.

“So,” he whispered.

“What would you say if I asked you out?”

Hell, I wasn’t sure. The guy was seriously hot, but going by his reputation, was he someone I could trust? I’d already been burned before, and I didn’t think I could handle it again.

“I’d say you’re going to have to ask me to find out.”

He smiled at me before he whispered again. “Can I take you out when I get back to New York?”

“No,” I blurted. Shit. “I mean no.” What the fuck, Beth? He drew his brows together, and clearly disappointed by the way his shoulders slumped. “I’m sorry. I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

“Why not?”

“I’m a relationship type of girl.”

“And I’m not?” he said before he fixed the mistake he made. “I mean I’m not a girl, but you get me. What makes you think I’m not one for a relationship?”

“I remember you from the party. You had five different girls all over you.”

Ezra chuckled nervously and shook his head. “Unbelievable.” He sat back on his chair and ran his fingers through the dark curls. “Forget I asked.”

A sudden wave of guilt washed over me. I knew I shouldn’t be judging the guy. I hardly knew him, but after what I went through, was it wrong to protect my heart from being broken again?

My attention shifted to E. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t.”

“It’s okay. Everyone thinks the same thing about me, so why shouldn’t you?”

My focus shifted outside the window, and I tucked my hair behind my ear then thought for a moment. I felt like a bitch. Probably because I am one. Great.

A few hours had passed, and things couldn’t have been more awkward. Neither of us had said a word to each other. The guilt slowly ate at my flesh. I tried to talk to him at one point, but he had grabbed his earphones and listened to some top forty music to avoid me. I couldn’t blame him though. Hell, I wouldn’t want to speak with me after that.

A heavy sigh escaped my lips as I took off my belt with the sudden need to use the bathroom. “Excuse me please.”

He moved his legs and I squeezed passed him. I was so close that I was sure he had a good view of my ass if he bothered to open his eyes. After a quick trip, I returned and grabbed my laptop from the overhead compartment before I sat down. Opening the screen, I clicked on the word document titledUnderneath the Mistletoe.

Writing for me came naturally. It was constantly on my mind. Fuck, I came up with my best stuff doing mundane things, like showering. The number of scenes I had written based on thoughts I had in the shower were incredible. As I wrote, I noticed Ezra sneaking a few glances at my PC every now and then. Knowing he was trying to read what I typed, I made sure my words were light-hearted and fun. There were no sexy times in the chapter I wrote anyway. The story was about a girl, with a troubled past like myself, who found the love of her life in the most unexpected place. Every intimate scene between them was heated and passionate. Something I wanted for myself.

“Excuse me, we’re taking the lunch orders right now.” The flight attendant shifted me from my computer screen.

“Vegetarian for me please.”

Ezra smiled when he placed his request. “The meatiest of meat dishes for me.”

The flight attendant laughed ass she flirtatiously gave Ezra come fuck me eyes. My attention turned away to my keyboard and I continued my story until lunch was served. I saved my work and closed my laptop before I placed it in the pocket of the seat in front of me. Putting down the food tray, the attendant handed me my meal before she gave Ezra his dish. I took small bites of the vegetarian lasagne which surprisingly tasted good.

Ezra massacred the dish in front of him. I took a deep breath when he turned to me, grabbed a forkful of his meat and placed it eagerly into his mouth, chewing exceptionally louder than one should. “It’s so good. So so good.” He muttered while making sure his mouth was completely open.

Clearly, he did it on purpose. Trying to piss me off, and I got it. I deserved it. My lip curved up before I took my own forkful of food and brought it to my mouth as my eyes closed. “Mmmm,” I moaned.

When they opened, Ezra stopped chewing but swallowed hard. His intense gaze pierced through me while he shifted in his seat. “You don’t play fair, do you?”

“Never have.”

He took another forkful of his meal and placed it in his mouth as I watched. Ezra kept his lips slightly parted as he gnawed at his food, then smiled and closed his trap. Shaking his head, he shifted his attention from me. We both finish our meals and the attendant comes by shortly after to remove our trash.

“So, what’s your story about?” Ezra asked just as I opened up my laptop.

“I’m pretty sure you’ve read some of it already,” I winked.

“Yeah, I’ll admit. I did sneak a few peeks before. Nothing raunchy about it though.”

“Well, my two characters haven’t actually had sex yet. I’m building up their connection first. There is a little thing called angst.”

“And when they finally have sex, what will it be like?” Ezra asked.

My fingers stopped clicking the keys and I thought for a moment. I could only think of one word to describe how I wanted their sex to go. “Explosive.”

“Like diarrhoea?” Ezra joked.

A loud chuckle escaped my lips before I corrected him. “Fervent. Passionate.”

“Sounds like what all sex should be like.”

“Not arguing with you there.” I paused for a moment before I shifted my gaze to him. “I’m really sorry about before.”

Ezra’s smile was genuine. “Thank you.”

We’d just arrived at the airport and could exit the plane. E stood and pulled his bag from the overhead compartment and handed me my own.

“Thank you.”

I grabbed my laptop and walked out then waited for Anastasia who looked cosy with the tattoo guy. He leaned in and kissed her on the cheek goodbye before she walked over to me. “All I can say is DIBS!”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “He’s all yours.”

After collecting our luggage, we made our way outside “How was it sitting with E?”

“You seem happy right now. I won’t burst your little bubble yet.”

“That bad?”

“Let’s just say I’m going to kill you for pulling the swapsies.”

“Oh, don’t go saying that,” Ezra sneered. “It wasn’t that bad, was it?”
