Chapter 9

I woke up to the sun shining on my face. I stepped out onto the balcony and breathed in deeply. I love it up here. The air is so invigorating. I stretched my arms and legs. I took a shower, enjoying the hot water as it relaxed my muscles. I wrapped a bath sheet around me. I looked at myself in the mirror. My skin was clear and my hair was wavy. I decided to put it up in a messy bun.

Allie left the makeup in my bathroom so I thought I would give it a try. I put a little color on my eyes and lips. I wasn’t about to touch the mascara, that was too scary. I liked the way I looked. I knew I would be changing clothes so I chose a summer dress that Gina gave me for my birthday. I paired it with my ballet flats. I looked cute, which is not how I would normally describe myself.

Gina was at the counter finishing up cooking breakfast. “You look cute. I like it. Are you ready for today?” I went to the refrigerator for some orange juice. “I’m really nervous. Sabrina is so amazing, it’s kind of intimidating. Plus finding a gown, oh my gosh.” I took a drink of the orange juice. “Uh..” Gina tried to warn me, but too late. I forgot I just brushed my teeth. I ended up spitting all over the sink. “I’m so sorry,” I said as I wiped my chin. Gina handed me a water bottle while holding back a chuckle. “No problem, just please wipe it up. I think you got some on the counter.”

Allie joined us as Gina laid out some eggs and toast. Her face was perfect with makeup around her eyes. I knew it was because she had been crying last night. I hoped she was better today. We ate quickly and headed to the garage. Gina drove a nice SUV. She pulled in front Alpha’s house just as Sabrina walked out. Her beautiful brown hair was piled neatly on her head with a few curled wisps of hair framing her face. She was stunning. I’m not even close to being as graceful as she is. How am I ever supposed to fill this woman’s shoes?

Allie and I were seated in the back. I looked to her to make sure she was okay. She was looking out the window off into the distance. I touched her hand to get her attention. She turned to me and smiled. “I promise not to ruin your day. I’m okay. I just have a lot on my mind.” I nodded, she squeezed back on my hand. “Thank you, Cass. You were right.” I smiled back to her. “I’m glad. I have hope things will work out. I’ll be here for you no matter what.” She slightly nodded and turned back to the window.
We quickly arrived at the dress shop. It was a fancy little store that had everything required for an elegant evening. One side held clothing for men and women, including accessories. The other side contained lavish dinnerware, décor, and furnishings. A sweet, plump little woman, Amelia, greeted our party and lead us to some sofas. She treated us all to mimosas while we discussed details of the mating ceremony. Amelia was the go to specialist for mating ceremonies, according to Sabrina.

“Now dear, why don’t we start with your theme.” Amelia pulled me up and had me turn to study my figure. “I’m sorry, but I don’t have one. I’m new to pack life. I don’t know what is expected.” Amelia squealed in delight. “An open mind. Those are the most fun to plan." Allie went to look at the gowns. She pulled 4 without a second thought. “Here, try these. I know they’ll look amazing on you.”

Each gown was incredible. They were each different but each had a unique beauty that drew my attention. I quickly realized why she chose them. I saved my favorite one for last. The first was a light silvery color with intricate beading going from the right shoulder to the left hip. The second was another silver color with a plunging neck and back. I wasn’t very comfortable in it but it did fit perfectly. Dress 3 was white, kind of like a wedding gown with a train that shimmered behind me as I walked. Although it was gorgeous it wasn’t practical. I modeled each dress in turn.
The final dress was THE dress. It felt perfect. It fit perfect. It was perfect. I walked out of the changing room to the sound of several gasps. I stood on the stage and turned to face the mirrors. “Oh darling, you look absolutely stunning.” Sabrina approached me. The gown was an off white sheath with gold embellishments. It had, I was told, a sweetheart neckline with spaghetti straps. At the small of my back the material bunched delicately and was bound with more embellishments. “I may be speaking out of turn, but I think this is it.” She made a quick adjustment to the back. “Yes, that is much better, I think it’s perfect." Gina agreed. Allie quickly found the perfect bracelet to accompany the gown.

I couldn’t see what Sabrina did, but I felt a breeze on my back. “What do you think, Amelia? Can you make this adjustment?“ Amelia grabbed some pins and placed them carefully not to poke me. “I need maybe 3 days. Saturday is the big day? I think we’ll get it just right. Now based on your gown I have thoughts of the setup. How do you feel about a thin tall canopy. Vines and lights for décor?” I smiled and nodded quickly. I couldn’t speak. I was too emotional, it all sounded enchanting. Gina found a pair of flats that went perfectly with my gown, meaning I would be able to walk, thank goodness. Sabrina and Gina found dinnerware and centerpieces that would complement Amelia’s idea perfectly.

Allie and I talked about the food. “Don’t worry about it, Daddy can handle that part." It was customary to serve food at any party in pack life, it was insulting to starve your guests. She informed me that mating ceremonies were usually more casual, but since the ceremony would also make Derek the new Alpha it should be a big to-do. She also informed me that the entire pack would likely be in attendance. This made me really nervous. I would be in the spotlight. I would be front and center for everyone to view. Of course they would be there for Derek, as they all knew and respected him. It’s not just about me. It’s for Derek and the pack. It’s a celebration for all.

My phone chimed. Hey, babe. I miss you already. How are the plans going? I couldn’t help but smile. We were now seated outside at a lovely little bistro with an umbrella providing shade. Sabrina claimed she was famished and that Derek can wait. Ally seemed to be in a much better mood. She was smiling and conversing with our group.

They’re perfect. I got a gown and almost everything is planned. We just need to decide on the location. “Is that Derek?” Sabrina asked me. I smiled and nodded. “Please inform him we will be going to pick out a suit for him tomorrow.” I nodded, “sure.”
A suit???
If I'm wearing a gown, you're wearing a suit. Suck it up.
Yes ma'am. As long as you go with me.
I rolled my eyes. “Sabrina, Derek would like me to go with you tomorrow. Would that be alright?” I didn’t know the proper etiquette for the men, but I did inform the ladies that Derek was not to see the gown until the ceremony, as it would be if it were a wedding. They loved the idea and thought it appropriate. “Of course, dear. I would expect nothing less.“
I'll be there. Gotta go. We're eating lunch and the food is here. The food was nothing I had ever seen before. I ordered a French onion soup and a ham and gruyere crepe. It was incredible. The soup was beefy and sweet. It was topped with a thick bread smothered in a melty creamy cheese. The crepe was soft, smooth, and savory.

Bye babe. Enjoy your lunch. I'll see you as soon as you get back. <3
“Allie, what does this mean?” I showed her the text I just received. “It’s a heart. Here look.” Allie schooled me on emojis while the ladies spoke about the ceremony. Their excitement was prevalent. Eventually Gina segued into Allie having a mating ceremony. “Mom, I don’t even have a mate yet. This is Cass's day. Let her have the spotlight.” Gina turned to me, her hand to her chest. “I’m so sorry, I am so happy for you. I am just so honored that you’re allowing me to be a part of all your planning.” I waved her off. “Its fine, really. And of course you’re going to be part of everything. You’re family.” Gina was touched. “Oh, sweetie. Thank you so much.”

Sabrina and I made plans for the following morning before we all parted ways. Derek was with Will eating in the Kitchen. Will jumped up grabbed me into a bear hug and spun me around. Derek growled. Will laughed it off as he placed me down. “So, what are we doing today?” Derek wrapped his arms around me. “We aren’t doing anything. Cass and I are going to spend the rest of the day together.” “Awe man, you’re such a bummer. You had her all to yourself yesterday. I want to hang out with my sister too you know.” Derrek growled when Will picked me bridal style and spun away, pulling me out of Derek’s embrace. I couldn’t help but giggle. “To be fair, he only had me until sun down. You guys had patrol last night, remember?” He rushed upstairs to the entertainment room, me still in his arms. Derek followed, right on his heels. “Come on. Pick out a movie.

When it’s over you love birds can do whatever. I’ll make some popcorn.”
Derek and I couldn’t resist Will. “Don’t burn the popcorn! I yelled down to Will. “I’ll hurt you if you do.” Derek laughed at my threat. I picked out Napoleon Dynamite, I’d heard it was funny, but never actually watched it. Derek had to get it started, I didn’t know how to work the electronics. The movie was ready and waiting to go on the giant screen. I picked the very middle seat and propped my legs up. “I’ll go get some sodas, you want one?” I nodded. “Yes, thank you.” Derek bent down to kiss my lips.

“No need, I already got it. Allie said she’d join us in a minute and Dane is coming over too.” Will tossed a soda to Derek and dropped a Dr. Pepper in my lap. “Thanks.” I tapped the soda can and opened it. Soda sprayed everywhere! On my face, my clothes, my hair, even up my nose. I screamed from being caught off guard, Damn, I should’ve remembered I shaved him. He must have shaken the can the entire time he was gone. Will was on the floor laughing as hard as possible. I could see Derek wanted to help me, but didn’t know what to do.

“Will, you ass! It went up my nose!” This caused Will to laugh even harder. He threw a napkin at my face. I blew my nose to get the bubbles out. “I gotta go change.” I told Derek. “I’ll be right back." I went to my bathroom and wiped my face and hair, but I was still sticky so I would have to take a shower. I sent Derek a text to let him know I would be a little longer. I washed as fast as I could so I could get back. I stepped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around me. I opened the door and jumped out of my skin. Literally. I shifted into my wolf.

“Easy, babe. It’s just me.” I looked at Derek and growled my frustration. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. I just wanted to steal a kiss.” I turned to the closet, waiting for him to open it. When he didn’t move I looked back to him. “Oh, right.” He opened the door turned on the light and closed the door behind me. I had to try to remember how to shift back. What was it Gina told me? Stay calm and get control. Okay Cass, you can do it. Be human again. Nothing. Crap what do I do? I heard a whimper and quickly realized it came from me. What do I do, what do I do?
“Cass? Are you alright?” I whimpered my response. “Its okay Cass, you can do it. Just focus. You know what it feels like to be human. Push your wolf to your core and bring yourself out.” I remembered working my core during trading. I focused on my center and relaxed my body, and I shifted. I took a deep breath. “Cass?” knock knock. “I’m okay. I’ll be out in a sec.” I grabbed some workout clothes and quickly dressed.

I opened the door. Derek stood there with a concerned look on his face. I smiled and jumped into him making him catch me. I wrapped my legs around his torso and kissed him as hard as I could. I felt his erection right at my center. When I couldn’t breathe anymore I pulled back, my hands on his face. “Thank you for bringing me back.” I stood back on my floor and bit my lip embarrassed. “Sorry for that.” I nodded to his pants. Derek turned around and adjusted. He took my hand and we went back up the stairs.

“What took you so long?” Will asked, shoving a handful of popcorn in his mouth. “I scared Cass into her wolf. She had a little trouble shifting back.” Will cracked up. I covered my face embarrassed. Ally and Dane arrived just then. “What’s going on? Cass why are you beet red?” Allie asked. She had changed into more comfortable clothes as well. “Will got me back for shaving his legs.” Allie sat on the wet seat and jumped back up. “Will, mom is going to kill you if you don’t clean that up.” Will took the middle cushion and threw it into the laundry room. He sat in the armchair leaving me and Derek one side of the sofa while Allie and Dane had the other. Derek pulled me onto his lap and kicked up the foot rest.

“What are we watching?” Dane asked. “Napoleon Dynamite. I’ve never seen it.” This made Will laugh again. “What is so funny. You know Cass spent the last 4 years working her butt of at dad’s diner. She didn’t get out much.” Allie came to my rescue. I went to grab a popcorn but wrinkled my nose. “Will you burnt it. I told you not to.” I smacked his arm, barely reaching him from my seat. “I did not, its perfect.” Dane sniffed “That’s burnt, man. Is your nose broken?” Allie laughed, “no, he’s just a garbage disposal. He’ll eat anything.” Allie switched on the movie and dimmed the lights, she grabbed a few blankets from the closet, “You want one?” Derek held his hand up to catch, “yeah, thanks."

With the blanket covering us, Derek got courageous. His hand traveled to areas that made me hot all over. He caressed my stomach and brought his hand dangerously low. I grabbed his hand to stop him. He intertwined our fingers and kissed them. He then placed his hand on my thighs. I didn’t mind that until his hand traveled upward. I had to stop him again. It was so distracting, I had no idea what was going on in the movie. “Derek, stop it.” I whispered into his ear. “Sorry, babe I have a hard time controlling myself when I’m around you.” He kissed me under my ear, making me shiver.

“I need popcorn, that’s not burnt.” Dane spoke out of no where. “I’ll get it. I never burn it.” Derek let me climb off him. “I’ll help you.” Allie jumped up and followed me down the stairs. I got 3 bags ready while she grabbed some sodas and candy. “How are you enjoying the movie?” I had to think for a second to remember what we had watched so far. “Derek is distracting me. It’s hard to remember any of it.” Allie smiled to me. “I know what you mean. Dane keeps holding my hand under the blanket.” Awe, that is so sweet. “So are you still planning on rejecting him?”
Allie headed toward the stairs. “I’m not sure. He said he still wants me, but that’s not fair to him. He’d be giving up so much to be with me.” I followed her up the stairs. “Yes, but look at what you’re giving up by not being with him, and forcing him to give up in the process." She shook her head, “He can find someone. He’s strong and handsome. Girls are always hanging around him. He’ll be able to bond.”

At the top of the stairs Will got thrown to the floor. Dane had him pinned in seconds. They were laughing and playing around. “Dane, let my brother up, he’s special.” Allie looked to Dane. He laughed at her meaning. He helped her with the load of food she was carrying. We went back to our seats and the movie. “This popcorn is perfect, babe.” He kissed my mouth. “I told you I don’t burn popcorn.” I winked at him. He growled seductively.
We finally got through the movie and all of the snacks. “I need a work out now. Anyone want to go to the training center?” Dane asked. I got excited, I love the training center. And having someone to spar with was an added bonus. “Do we have enough time before we go to your aunts?” I asked Derek while I was bouncing on my toes. I really wanted to get some training in. He looked at his watch, “yes, but we’ll have to go straight from there. You won’t have time to come back here.” I rushed down the stairs to grab what I would need to change into and an extra set, like Gina told me. I threw some makeup into the bag, just in case. I threw my hair up into a ponytail and was ready to go.
