Ace and I watch as Heather leaves with my Nanna from Doc's. I notice her taking that second to look back at us. I bet she is freaking out, but by the look on Ace's face she isn't the only one.
"Hey man. You okay?" I ask trying to break the silence.
He looks at me, with a look I've never seen in all the years I've known him.
"Not sure. I mean, what the fuck am I going to do with a daughter?" he says, rubbing the back of his neck.
"You make up for lost time, dude. That's what you do. Let's wait and see what the test says first, before you get too worked up over it." I say, patting his shoulder.
"I gotta run back to the range. I'm introducing firearms to a group of Boy Scouts, or maybe its Girl Scouts, this afternoon. I'll holler at you later." he says.
We both walk out of Doc's and part ways in the parking lot. I headed back to the gym, so I can fill in for the water aerobics class again. The old ladies group again...yay for me! Not!
I get through my day, and head home. Get my shower and dinner over with, and decide to call it an early night. I lay in bed, thinking about how beautiful Heather looked today. Son of a bitch! I forgot that I was going to talk to her. I pull my phone from the nightstand, and open my texts between she and I.
"Hey. You still awake?" I ask
"Yeah. I'm still up. Getting things ready for my first day of work at the diner tomorrow morning." she replies.
"What shift do you work?" I text, hoping it is early so she will get off early.
"I've got to be there at 6 and I get off at 2. Why do you ask?" she responds.
"I never got a chance to talk to you today. Can I come by tomorrow when you get off work?" I ask.
"I would enjoy that. Yes." she says. I bet she has that pretty smile plastered all over her face when she sent that.
"Ok. Good. I'll be there around 3, so you have time to relax a little." I send.
"Ok. See you then. Good night, T." she sends back.
"Sweet dreams, H." I text, setting my phone back on my nightstand. My eyelids are now heavy enough that I can actually sleep. Maybe it was the day's unfinished business that was keeping me awake.
I wake the next morning, and go about my day as I normally do. Open the gym, do my own workout, pay some bills and process new memberships, etc...it is the same everyday. I keep a close eye on the clock, because I don't want to be late meeting Heather. I wonder if she had a good first day at work. I guess I will find out in a couple of hours. As I am finishing up with putting the new members into our computer system, my phone rings. Heather! Is she off early?
"Hey Rosie. You get off work already?" I ask.
