“Wh-who’s there?” Carla stuttered out in fear. The figure stepped into the light revealing her mother. Her crying mother. “Mom?!” Carla exclaimed in a panic.
Not for her well being but for her own safety. Something must be seriously wrong if it made her mother cry. She quickly scanned her body for blood or wounds and found none. She calmed down slightly before turning her attention back to her mother now more confused and wary than anything.
“Hush Carla. I’m not going to hurt you,” Her mothers voice was soft. Carla faintly remembered being talked to like this when her father was still around. “I just wanted to talk to you,” Her mother said before taking a seat at the end of her bed. Carla scooted up on her bed till her back hit the headboard.
“Have I done something wrong?” she stuttered out quietly not wanting to meet her mothers eyes.
“No, no , no , no.” Her mother said softly shaking her head. “I’m the one who’s in the wrong.” What? Carla snapped her head up to see her mother’s tearstained face, freshly weeping.
“Excuse me?” Carla asked in shock.
“I am such a horrible mother. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. How could I have put you through all of the torture and despicable things I did. I would blame it on the alcohol or your fathers death being too hard for me or your brothers disappearance but I can’t. It’s me. I’m simply evil! I don’t even know how I sleep at night knowing what I’ve done to my own child!” Her voice grew shrill and hysterical. Carla stayed silent in shock not knowing what to do.
Was her mother apologizing? This made no sense. She had no idea what to do. Just earlier she’d been threatening her life and now she was apologizing for treating her cruelly for a lifetime? What was going on? Carla had ached to hear these words from the first incident but she knew she never would and was skeptical of the whole thing.
Her mother wiped her eyes and sniffled a little finally stopping her tears. Her eyes were still watery as she looked at her daughter and slowly held her hands out.
“Do you think...you could ever forgive me?” Carla’s jaw dropped. Then she noticed a slight twitch in the side of her mothers mouth. After another second the twitch became a smile which became a full out laugh and the arms that were open before were now clutching at her stomach as her mothers body was wracked with tremors from her laughter.
“Oh... my....god... I couldn’t do it!” She gasped out in between laughs. “I could barely keep a straight face!” She laughed some more before sitting up straight and pointing at Carla. “And you,” she began before dissolving into laughter once more. “You looked like you actually bought it! Hahahahah!” Carla was more than a little confused but her mind was starting to figure what had just happened.
After awhile her mother seemed to calm down and she wiped away the tears that were in her eyes. “I just wanted to try something a little different. Instead of physical torture since that always tires me out I figured emotional might be fun but damn I didn’t think you’d actually buy it. You’re more stupid than I thought,” After another light chuckle she stood to her feet leaving a now watery eyed Carla on the bed by herself.
As she got to the door she paused in opening it and looked back at her.
“Oh, I sleep like a baby.” With a wink and a last cackling laugh she opened the door and sashayed out slamming it behind her making Carla jump. After a long time she curled up into a fetal position and cried herself to sleep. The next day it took a lot of makeup to remove the puffy crying look from her eyes.
“Your brother did what?!” Sam sputtered out choking on her water after Carla told her what she’d found the other night at her house. She simply nodded tiredly.
“I don’t know what game he’s playing at but I want no part of it. I mean I was happy he was back but mad also I mean like what right does he have? After I overheard his story, I don’t know what to think anymore.” Carla pushed the pasta around on her plate having no appetite for school lunch today. Ridian was in another team meeting. He was going to start having a lot of those lately as they prepared for the upcoming lacrosse championships.
“I call bullshit on his whole story,” Sam said wiping her mouth with a napkin. “That boy spells trouble and of the dangerous kind. I’d stay away from him if I were you.” Carla gave her a blank stare.
“Gonna be a little hard to do that if he’s living right next to me in the same damn house Sam.”
“Oh right,” She replied sheepishly. “Well then at least lock your doors or something.” Carla opened her mouth to retort that her mother had removed the locks from her door ages ago for nighttime torture but quickly caught herself and just nodded.
Sam gave her a reassuring rub on the back before standing up to get rid of her trash. That’s when Carla felt a pair of eyes on her. She looked around trying to find the source and that’s when her eyes landed on Danny’s outside the glass windows leading to the school garden. She froze watching as he gestured for her to come outside.
She looked around a bit and saw Sam was distracted by a chocolate cake being set up in the dessert line and decided to head out for a minute. When she got outside she wrapped her arms around her, the chilly November weather making her shiver slightly.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Carla hissed out through clenched teeth. Danny simply smiled.
“Is that your best friend in there? Does she come over often?” Carla gave him a weird look.
“Yes and never you should know why. Again what-” He cut her off with another question.
“What about your boyfriend? He drop by often?” Carla through her hands up.
“No! Now tell me why you’re here!” Danny finally stopped looking into the cafeteria and gave her another smile.
“I was just curious about your school life little sis. I’ll leave now don’t worry. See you at home sis!” Danny promptly turned around and walked away leaving Carla bewildered and with none of her questions answered.
Later that night after Carla had showered, brushed her teeth and snuggled into the bed for sleep she heard another knock on her door. She tensed up assuming it was her mother again back for round two and cowered silently underneath her covers, too scared to move or make a sound.
“It’s me Danny,“. Bolting upright and suddenly unafraid with the flame of fury boiling in her veins she calmly and quietly hissed out a ‘Come in’ through clenched teeth. He entered and shut the door quietly behind him. The lights were all off except for the lamp on her nightstand and it cast yellow shadows across his face, making him appear older and more sinister.
“What the hell is wrong with you?!” Carla whisper hissed. Danny silently made his way over to her bed where she could see a small smile sitting squarely upon his face as he sat down on her duvet.
“Why nothing at all little sis. I’m just peachy,“. His smile widened further inching up a meter on the creeper scale.
“Cut the crap,“. Carla’s growled out no longer caring to be quiet. “What are you really here for? I thought you came back for me but instead here you are getting buddy buddy with our mom. What the fuck is that?“. Danny leaned back on his hands the smile never leaning his face and his air of nonchalance and apathy pissed Carla off.
“See that’s where you’re wrong sweet cheeks. I didn’t come here for you,“. He turned to look at her the smile finally sliding off his face to be replaced with an expression colder than their moms and Carla flinched. Curiosity took hold and she questioned him.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Her tone was laced in annoyance but also a twinge of fear. Danny smirked at her but there was no humor in it and his eyes were so dark blue they were near black in the dim light.
“It means exactly what I said. You’re not stupid as well as ugly are you?” His tone was lathered in poison making Carla shrink back in shock. “Aw did I hurt your feelings?” He sneered down at her before cackling loudly. Carla gulped, fear now taking hold of her body.
“Then what did you come here for?” She whispered too scared to blink or turn away from his gaze. Danny leaned in close to her face so that she could smell his mint breath before licking his lips and replying.
“Your inheritance,“. She stared at him in confusion. He smirked meanly down at her before leaning back and picking at his finger nails in an uncaring manner. “You see sweet cheeks,” he began without looking up. “Pour old pops left you some money on his will and since he’s supposedly dead, you’re gonna get it when you turn eighteen which just happens to be next month,“. He looked up at her an evil glint in his eyes.
“But instead of you getting it I will. Now enough of that I have some other business to attend to,“. Before Carla could complain or ask questions he’d pounced on her pinning her arms down above her head with one hand while removing her pajama bottoms with the other.
Immediately she screamed but he smacked her so hard her head rang and she could taste blood from a split lip. All she could do was whimper and watch in disbelief as he stripped her until she lay naked on the bed. He looked over her bare body with hungry and eyes and stroked the skin on her belly making her shiver in disgust.
“Are you going to rape me?” She whispered quietly, tears welling in her eyes. Danny shrugged leaning back slightly to look her in the eye.
“We’ll see,“. He started to lean down already sliding off his own trousers. He stopped when she spoke again.
“Who are you? This isn’t the Danny I remember,“. Carla stared at him in horror her lips curling upwards. He stared back his eyes blank and face void of any emotion.
“The Danny you know has been dead for a long time sweet cheeks,” Carla whimpered as Danny spoke once more. “Tell anyone about this, and you won’t be the only one to suffer. Your friend Sam has such pretty skin and your little plaything Ridian has a lot riding on this lacrosse championship.”
“You wouldn’t do anything to them. You’d never get away with it!” Carla managed to spit out with a little venom. This only made Danny smile again.
