Chapter 9

Carla left the Nurse’s room with a tardy excuse slip in her hand and headed to French III. Thankfully she didn’t share it with either Sam or Ridian and was able to avoid them until Digital Imaging where she shrugged off their invasive questions with vague answers of being sick. They both seemed to buy and Sam continued on chatting her life away about nothing.

Ridian on the other hand seemed to give Carla more than one suspicious look but didn’t press it. Once towards the end of the class he seemed to sniff the air and recoil at an unpleasant smell causing panic to run through Carla’s veins on the track of a fast pulse. He never said anything and seemed to forget about it causing her in turn to calm down.

Carla quickly walked from her locker away from the school’s front doors. She didn’t want to have to face Ridian and Sam again on the walk home and had decided to wait them out in the library. At least this way she could not lie to them and be productive at the same time.

When she entered the library she inhaled deeply, enjoying the crisp smell of paper and unopened books. Untapped knowledge as she like to call it. Smiling at the crusty little librarian at the front of the library she made her way to one of the tables in the back near the autobiography section. It was quiet since no one ever came over there and out of sight of the door and the librarian.

Humming an Arctic Monkeys song softly to herself she unpacked her class materials before taking out her iPod to listen to the real thing. Once the steady beat of “Yellow Bricks” was beating in her eardrums she proceeded to tackle first her chemistry lab homework before rewriting her book analysis essay for Latino Literature.

They’d just finished discussing “Always Running” by Luis Rodriguez. The story of a chicano from gang life who made something of himself. It was lot more deep and analytical than it sounds. After they finished they had to analyze its relevance with being an american and Carla was really struggling with her definition.

Just as she was about to crumple up the lined paper and throw it across the room a large figure smelling of The Body Shop’s body wash slid into the seat next to her. She looked up curious at who was interrupting her work; Peter. He was of course, on his phone.

“Can I help you?” she asked instantly annoyed at his present, her eyes furrowed in a brow.

“Yes you can,” another voice sounded from her right. She turned to face the voice, an eyebrow already raised.

“Chris?” she asked in confusion.

“In the flesh,” he responded with a smirk as he leaned back in the chair. “How goes it babe?”

“Babe?” Carla questioned in bewilderment.

“Leave her be Chris. You know she’s a taken woman,” Peter said in a dull tone from her left.

“Babe?” Carla repeated still stuck on the endearment.

“Ahh right!” Chris exclaimed clapping his hands together loudly. “Too bad, we could have had so much fun,” he cooed stroking Carla’s chin while he licked his lips. She smacked his hand away with a glare but before she could shush him the librarian rounded one of the shelves, beady brown eyes narrowed and mad as they peered out from horn rimmed glasses.

“I’m going to have to ask you to leave Christian. We do not condone loud voices inside the library,” she hissed out with her arms crossed in evil triumph. Carla snickered as Chris rose to his feet, a playful smirk still plastered on his face as he exited giving the librarian a wink that made her wrinkled little cheeks blush.

“Later gators! Chris out,” he said before walking away. He is such a fool, Carla thought while shaking her head. Peter cleared his throat to alert her to his presence and she jumped slightly before turning her narrowed eyes in his direction.

“And what is it that you want?“she said skeptically. He set down his phone and faced her head on. Once again she was dazzled by his hazel eyes. They had little flecks of gold in them that sparkled in the light. Her breath caught the longer she stared into them.

“I just wanted to apologize for my actions at your house. They weren’t appropriate,” he said sincerely. He offered a small smile at the end that made his dimples pop out. Carla was dumbstruck.

“Are you serious?” she blurted out. His smile stretched farther.

“Why? Surprised that I can NOT be a douchebag?” he teased his hazel eyes glinting mischievously. Carla returned his smile with a small one of her own before poking him lightly in the arm.

“I didn’t think you were a douchebag,” she protested softly. He gave her a look. “Okay, maybe a little one,” she amended making a pinching motion with her fingers. He laughed lightly before leaning over to see the cover of her book.

“Always Running huh? It’s a good one,” he commented thoughtfully. Carla faked a gasp.

“You read? I thought your phone was your only source of life outside of breathing, eating and sleeping,” she finished with a smirk. He gave her a mock glare.

“Ha ha very funny. Most of the time I’m reading on iBooks for your information,“. This came as news to Carla and her eyes widened. She’d always assumed that he was just tumblr scrolling or pinteresting or checking game stats. “I like to read. It helps me forget about my troubles,” he added lightly as he picked up the book to further inspect the cover.

“I completely understand you!” Carla exclaimed. He looked at her in surprise.

“You do? Wouldn’t peg you as the book type either,” he said in a light joking tone. She rolled her eyes before continuing.

“I’m actually quite the bookworm. I love losing myself in a book and you just-” she dropped off as she searched for the words. Excitement was in Peters eyes as he watched her and then suddenly they were speaking at the same time.

“It’s like you lose all sense of time and just become one with that world. Yes!” they both cried out before dissolving in laughter as they earned themselves harsh “ssssh’s” from beyond the book case by the librarian.

When they settled down they began to have a heated discussion on their favorite books, their favorite authors and genres and all the book signings and conventions they’ve gone too. They even delved into the world of books turned movies and wether or not directors and actors fully performed the book to its highest potential. When they were finished a whole two hours had gone bye and the library was closing.

Carla suddenly realized how close they’d scooted together. Their arms were touching and she was only a few inches away from Peter’s bright hazel eyes. They were currently staring at Carla with a new emotion and she sort of liked it. At a pause in their debate she found herself leaning in and so was Peter. Before anything could happen the librarian rounded the corner and ushered them both out.

As they walked down the school’s front steps, Carla found herself sad that she’d have to leave Peter. He was actually really sweet and surprisingly just as nerdy as her. They paused on the corner of the school.

“I take the bus,” Carla said.

“I drive,” Peter responded. “Need a ride?” His tone sounded slightly hopeful but that could’ve just been Carla’s wishful thinking. She hesitated before waving him off.

“It’s okay I’m fine. But thank you though,” she finished with a smile. He nodded scratching the back of his black curls in a shy but unbelievably cute way.

“Alright then, see ya around Juliet,” Peter said with a wink. Carla laughed. Admits their debate on books they’d strayed into the classical region and found they both hated the over exaggerated plot of romeo and juliet and had promptly began mock acting scenes from the play. Now it was a personal joke between the two.

“Bye Romeo,” Carla responded before waving and heading off to the bus stop. Peter watched her board before going to his own car and driving home. Carla was relieved to find her house empty and quickly made herself a tuna sandwich for dinner before jumping into a quick shower and heading to her room for bed.

Just as Carla was settling into her covers with one of her favorite paperbacks-The Thief Lord- she heard a small beep from her phone. Picking it up she saw the familiar flash on the screen that meant she’d gotten a text message. It was from Ridian.

How did he get my number? she thought.

Opening up the message, she read what he sent:

Ridian

Heyy cupcake! I didn’t see you after school so I just wanted to make sure you got home okay:)

Carla

That’s sweet but you don’t have to worry about me. I got home just fine.

Ridian

Of course I would worry about my favorite pastry! Someone might steal you away from me ;)

Carla

I don’t remember being purchased and owned by you -__-

Ridian

Ouch! You really can’t take a joke can you?

Carla

I’ll laugh when it’s funny.

Ridian

Dang girl. I feel like my cupcake spoiled because you’re just being stank.

Carla

And you’re being immature. Can I go now?

Ridian

No

Carla

I’m going. Bye

Ridian

Wait! Hold on a second!

Carla

What?

Ridian

Sweet dreams cupcake *blows kiss* ;)))))))))

Carla

Bye.

Carla went to set her phone back down on the bed side table as she shook her head at Ridian’s childish personality before it beeped again. This better not be him, she thought. Looking at the phone screen she saw that it wasn’t. It was Chris. Interesting. She opened it up and read the message.

Chris

Hallo babe! How goes it? ;)

Carla

Who is this?

Chris

*gasp* you deleted my number??? I’m hurt. Deeply and severely hurt :(((((

Carla

lol I know it’s you Chris

Chris

Don’t you mean, Super Sexy Can’t Wait to Blow Chris?? *flutters eyelashes*

Carla

Don’t push it. I’ve been meaning to change that stupid name.

Chris

Don’t! Especially since it’s soo accurate. Girl don’t even act like it ain’t. ;)

Carla

....

Chris

What?

Carla

Are you gay?

Chris

Hah! Sorry hun I don’t play for that team which is so unfortunate for them since I’d obviously be the MVP ;) But why do you say so??

Carla

Idk....your flamboyance?

Chris

Ahhhh I see. Well I’m memorable yes? Just cuz I like a bit of flair in my life doesn’t mean I like a bit of dick as well.

Carla

Well damn. Blunt.

Chris

They often are honey.

Carla

lol so are you saying to be memorable I need to be gay?

Chris

Oooooh Not for you babe. No body remembers the dykes.

Carla

Oh jeezus

Chris

Well it’s true!

Carla

Okay okay

Chris

Besides, Ridian would be sooo disappointed ;)

Carla

Ummm I beg your pardon?

Chris

Oh please bitch don’t act innocent with me ;)

Carla

Alright Mr. Flamboyant I’m not a bitch and I’m not acting innocent. Explain.

Chris

You know calling you bitch is a just a love tap with words sweetie :) And are you blind?? Do not tell me you don’t see how he looks at you? How he acts around you?

Carla

Nope.

Chris

In denial I see. Well explain away his reaction with peter. *smirks smugly*

Carla

Ummm.....

Chris

Thought sooooo! You can’t! Because you know it too. And you like him back. You’ve been googly eyes for him since day one.

Carla

Alright freckles calm down. So what if, and I’m not saying I do I’m just saying if, I would let’s say, have some kind of small romantic feelings for him?

Chris

The way you beat around the bush disgusts me. But I’ll answer your question.

Jump.

His.

Bones.

Carla

And we are done talking. Did you actually text me with a purpose??

Chris

Hmm maybe but I’ve forgotten it. Talk to you laterz sweet cheeks *kisses*

Carla

You sure you’re not gay? :)

Chris

It’s not funny anymore. -_-

Carla

kk Mr.Flamboyant, bye bye!

Carla giggled softly to herself as she set her phone down for a second time and picked up her book. Chris was a lot funnier than she had originally thought. And if he noticed the budding emotions she’d thought she’d so expertly kept hidden, Ridian must have noticed them too. She bit her lip in worry as she turned to the first page in her book.

Right when her eyes began to decipher the dark printed words her phone beeped again. Sighing in defeat she closed the book, marking her page and setting it on her bedside table before grabbing her phone and snuggling deeper into the covers of her bed. Clearly reading, would have too wait. This time the message was from Sam.

Sam

Hiya hun. What’s up?

Carla

Why are you calling me hun?

Sam

Not cute?

Carla

Not at all.

Sam

Too country bumpkin?

Carla

You named it.

Sam

*sigh* Anyways, whatcha doing?

Carla

Attempting to read but it seems like it’s not a feasible dream for me just yet.

Sam

lol sorry about that. Didn’t mean to interrupt your literature :)

Carla

No by all means, please do. I’m sure whatever you have to say is much more important.

Sam

Don’t be sarcastic with me biatch.

Carla

Wow nice Sam lasted for a whole thirty seconds! Did you need something?

Sam

lol I love that you know me so well! Not. Anyways I was just texting you to remind you about the game.

Carla

What game?

Sam

The lacrosse game.

Carla

What lacrosse game?

Sam

The one that’s happening after school on Wednesday!

Carla

Ooooooh that game! The one you’ve literally been reminding me about since the idea to even have a game that wednesday was birthed in the minds of the lacrosse coaches because it means the dance team is performing in front of the stands at half time to practice for championships this winter. That game! How could I forget, that game. -_-

Sam

Well I was just making sure. No need to be so touchy.

Carla

It was literally the only thing in your vocabulary until Ridian came along. I have a right to be touchy when I’m fucking annoyed.

Sam

Okay touché. Anyways wear something cute and try to act peppy yes?

Carla

If I must.

Sam

Alright awesome! See you tomorrow! Good night babe ;) better?

Carla

Better :). Night

As soon as Carla finished typing the word ‘night’ she set her phone on the bedside table and flipped over so her back faced it while burying her face in the pillow. A sudden wave of fatigue hit her as the full force of the horrible monday she’d experienced rocked her body and she drifted off into a fitful sleep.
