A Loss

My name is Mia Richards and I'm 18 years old. I spent my childhood mostly alone, my mom tried her hardest to make our home life perfect but she was a single mom. She worked two jobs just to make ends meet and sadly was gone a lot. It has always been just the two of us against the world.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago when I was 16. After a long and painful battle, I lost her. Today we had her funeral and I feel so lost. I'm sitting in the living room of the tiny apartment we shared and I'm surrounded by her friends but I have never felt more alone.

I distantly realize someone is calling my name and I reluctantly look up. Sitting next to me is one of my mom's closest friends. Sheila and my mom have been close friends since they met three years ago.

"Hey sweetie, how are you holding up?"

She gives me a comforting hug.

"You know you are more than welcome to come stay with us if you want. We would love to have you."

I sigh and close my eyes.

"I just lost my best friend, she was all I had. I'm not sure how to go on without her, so I need some time to mourn and I rather be alone. I appreciate the offer but I want to stay here. I feel closer to her here."

I say in a whisper and she looks at me with sympathy.

"I know your mom always said you both only had each other but surely there is someone? Grandparents, aunts or uncles?"

I shake my head.

"I don't have any other family, my mom's parents died before I was born and she was an only child. I never knew my father, he left when she told him she was pregnant. She always refused to talk about him."

She looks at me with so much sadness that I have to fight back another round of tears.

"I'm so sorry, if you change your mind, call me. I'll come get you no matter what time it is okay?"

She hugs me again and I do my best to smile.

"Thanks, I'll remember that."

I don't talk much after that and after another hour everyone leaves, giving me hugs and expressing their condolences. When I'm finally alone I go into my mom's room, grab her robe and lay down on her bed. All I do for the next three days is cry and sleep. I only get up to do the basics like eat and use the bathroom.

On the fourth day my alarm goes off at 10:00 am and I drag myself out of bed and shower. All I want is to crawl back into bed but I have to go to work if I want to keep the apartment. I pull my long auburn hair up into a ponytail and put on my uniform.

I grab some toast and drink a glass of milk before heading over to Hal's Diner where I work. When I walk in I see Hal's wife Lucy.

"Good morning Mia, are you sure you're ready to come back to work? You can take more time if you need it."

I smile at her and reply half heartedly.

"Good morning Lucy, I'm fine just tired. I need to keep busy plus I have bills to pay."

She gives me a sad look but doesn't say another word. I put on my apron and start straightening the tables. I refill the napkins and the condiments for the lunch crowd. I know this is going to be a long day and I'm not disappointed.

The whole week passes in a blur of working and going home to basically pass out every night. Two weeks after I lose my mom, I can at least breathe again and don't break down crying every other minute. Life has to go on, even if I wish it didn't. When I walk into work today, I'm able to give Lucy a small sincere smile.

"Good morning Lucy, how has the day gone so far?"

She lays her hand on my arm before replying.

"Not too bad actually. How are you today?"

I give her a reassuring smile.

"I'm doing alright, life must go on right?"

She squeezes my arm in comfort before returning to her work. My work day goes by the same as usual. By the time the dinner rush is almost over I'm ready to leave but I still have two hours left in my shift. I hear the bell over the door ring and I look up to see who it is.

I see one of the most handsome men I have ever met walk in. He has brown hair, beautiful grey eyes and the most charming smile I have ever seen. He confidently walks over to a booth and sits down and I sigh.

Damn, he sat down in Rachel's section. It's fine though, I'm not in the right place to date right now.

I walk past and hear Rachel speak to him.

"Good afternoon handsome, what can I get for you today?"

Ugh, could she be any more flirtatious?

I don't know why it bothers me, I don't even know him. Next to Rachel he won't even notice me anyway.

"Give me a moment to look at the menu. Can I have a soda to start while I decide?"

He gives her a smile but then looks down at the menu and ignores her. He has a voice that makes butterflies take flight in my stomach. I almost laugh aloud at the annoyed look that comes over Rachel's face.

Wow, nobody ignores Rachel, with her obviously enhanced breasts and plunging neckline.

Apparently this guy isn't impressed because he continues to look down at the menu until Rachel huffs and walks away. I pass by him when I go to refill the coffee of one of my customers. When I go to return the coffee pot, he calls out to me.

"Excuse me, maybe you can help me."

He looks at my name tag when I walk over.

"Mia, a beautiful name for a beautiful lady."

I feel a blush rise up my cheeks but I give him a smile.

"What can I do for you, sir?"

"My name is Shawn."

He reaches out his hand to me and I shyly shake it. He gives me a wink that leaves me momentarily speechless.

"This is my first time here, what would you suggest?"

I clear my throat nervously.

"Well, I personally like the club sandwich and fries."

Suddenly an arm shoots between us and practically slams down a glass of soda. I jump and turn to see Rachel glaring at me. I quickly turn back to Shawn to excuse myself.

"Excuse me, but I have to go check on a customer. You have a wonderful evening."

I smile shyly at Shawn.

"Thank you for the help Mia, I look forward to seeing you again."

He gives me another wink and smile that makes my heart race. The next two hours go by without any problems, other than Rachel giving me the occasional glare. I help clean up and head home after my shift. When I'm laying in bed that night I can't help wondering if Shawn will come back again.

The next evening Shawn shows up again, this time he sits in my section. I smile when he takes a seat and I walk over to his table.

"Hello there, I guess you enjoyed your meal yesterday, if you decided to come back."

He gives me a sexy smile.

"It was delicious, plus there was this beautiful waitress that I was hoping to see again."

He gives me a wink so I have no doubt he is talking about me. A blush blooms on my face and I can't help being flattered.

The next week flies by at work. Shawn has shown up every day for dinner. We always make small talk in between my other customers. When Friday comes I find myself constantly looking up every time someone comes in, hoping it will be Shawn.

He doesn't show up before I leave for the night, so I put on my jacket and walk out of the diner. As soon as I leave, I hear someone call my name. I turn to see Shawn walking towards me.

"Hey beautiful, did you miss me?"

I'm so happy he's here. I never realized how much I looked forward to seeing him everyday.

"Hmm, maybe a little."

He smiles down at me and reaches out to tuck a hair that had come loose behind my ear. He steps closer to me.

"Just a little?"

I laugh but relent.

"Okay, more than a little. I'm glad you're here now though."

He chuckles and looks at me longingly.

"Can I give you a ride home? I would like to spend a little more time with you."

My smile widens and I nod.

"Okay, thank you."

I give him my address and he drives me home. When we get there, he walks me to my door.

"I'm sorry I didn't come in for dinner tonight. I had a meeting that ran late."

"It's okay, I understand."

I smile up at him.

"Let me make it up to you, have dinner with me tomorrow, you mentioned you were off right?"

I nod enthusiastically.

"Yes I'm off and I would love to have dinner with you."

I smile up at him. This is how our crazy relationship started. We date for three months when we go to dinner at one of the nicest restaurants in town. While we are enjoying our wine he takes my hand in his.

"I've been thinking a lot about our relationship, I'm in love with you Mia. I want to be with you, please move in with me."

I hesitate for only a moment. We haven't been together long but he's everything I could ever want.

"I love you too, let's do it."

In the beginning it's so perfect. He's my first everything, boyfriend, lover and I want to spend every moment with him. After a few months he talks me into quitting my job. He says he wants to take care of me.

Six months after I move in we are sitting down at my favorite restaurant. I'm enjoying our meal and the staff are amazing but every time I look at Shawn, he looks angrier and angrier. Every time I try to ask him what's wrong, he shuts me down.

We skip dessert and he's quiet until we return home. As soon as we walk in, he turns around and gets right up in my face. He's furious and I can't understand why.

"What the hell did you think you were doing?"

He screams at me and I look at him with confusion.

"What? I don't know what you are talking about."

He glares at me angrily.

"You were flirting with that waiter! Do you want him! Are you thinking about cheating on me?!"

He backs me into the wall, still screaming in my face. I'm trembling and have never been so scared in my life.

What's happening, everything was so perfect before now.

I'm lost in thought and when he notices he grabs a fistful of my hair, forcing me to look at him.

"Are you listening to me, you stupid bitch? You are not leaving me or cheating on me! YOU ARE MINE!!! No one else will touch you. If they do, I'll kill them. Do you hear me?!"

He shakes me by my hair and I cry out in pain.

"Y...Yes I hear you. I don't want anyone else, I swear."

My head is starting to pound because he still hasn't let go of it. I try to pull his hand loose and he gets angrier, if that is possible. He pulls his hand back and slaps me across the face, knocking me to the ground. I look up at him in total shock.

"Shawn please, I would never cheat on you. You have to believe me."

He stands over me and I curl into a ball trying to make myself smaller.

"Get the hell out of my face, you bitch, go to bed! Don't you come out until I tell you to!"

I quickly get up, run into the bedroom and throw myself on the bed. I cry nonstop until I fall into an exhausted sleep. I'm not sure how much time passes. I suddenly wake up when I feel a touch on my face where Shawn hit me. I open my eyes to find him leaning over me and I shrink back in fear.

"Mia, baby, I'm so sorry. You know I would never hurt you right? You just made me so angry and jealous. Just don't look at other guys like that okay? Your mine baby, I love you."

He pulls me into his arms and strokes my hair. I allow him to hold me but I can't stop thinking that you don't hurt someone you claim to love.
